Definition of Neutering

Groom A Shih Tzu

The shih tzu is a small toy breed with a long, straight, silky coat, which appears in a wide array of colors. Regular grooming is a necessity for this breed, as its coat mats and tangles easily.

Instructions

1. Brush your shih tzu as you notice mats and tangles beginning to form. Shih tzus with more cottony hair require brushing two to three times a week. Brushing silky-haired shih tzus once a week should do.

2. Work the coat out in layers, from the ends to the roots, using a wire brush with flexible pins, called a slicker. Go from the feet, to the legs and belly, and the body and tail. Part the coat with a rat tail comb, but use a metal comb on the mustache and below the ears. Use fingers to work through mats.

3. Choose a high quality dog shampoo and conditioner. Every shih tzu's coat is different and requires different products for grooming. Ask your vet, breeder or pet store for recommendations. Often trial and error is the way to find the best products for your dog.

4. Bathe your shih tzu once a week in lukewarm water. Shampoo twice, focusing on the legs, where mats form easily and dirt accumulates quickly. Work out mats slowly with fingers. Using a toothbrush, clean crusty buildup under the eyes and around the mouth. Rinse and condition.

5. Wrap your shih tzu in a couple of warm bath towels to remove excess water. Dry with a blow dryer. While drying, brush his coat to separate his hair. Part his hair, and tie his hair in a topknot on top of his head with a latex band to keep his fur out of his eyes.

6. Keep a daily watch on her eyes. Large-eyed breeds are highly prone to injury. Using a damp cloth or cotton pad, clean the inside corners of her eyes.

7. Check your shih tzus anal area frequently, particularly if you notice him rubbing his rear along the ground. To remove any encrusted fecal matter, rinse the area under warm running water, wash out the fecal matter, rub with a damp paper towel and blow his hair dry.

The horse is one of law enforcement's most useful resources. People greet and respond to not only the horses, but to the officers who ride them. People are often amazed at the level of training and ability this team holds. No matter the activity, whether it's community policing, crowd control, or search and rescue operations, mounted units are a vital part of today's law enforcement. The challenging training that takes place behind the scenes provides the officers with the level of knowledge and success necessary to get the job done.

Philosophy of Training

Training starts off with creating a connection between the rider and horse. The police officer must understand the dynamics of this partnership, which in turn strengthens the bond between rider and horse. When this is established it creates a skilled and positive team. The alliance of horse and rider becomes a pair united working and playing together. As training progresses, the officer learns to work with the horse, and not against the horse. If you understand how your equine comrade hears, sees, thinks and reacts to any condition, you can then train to be a trustworthy professional team.

Techniques

Mountedpolice.org says civilians are trained using the same methods employed by successful mounted police officers throughout the world. This style of riding is called the "Military Seat". Recognizing that in order to get the horse to perform the rider must give one or more signals for the horse to comprehend the exercise. Basically, there must be a coherent and incisive instruction given to communicate what the rider is asking from the horse. The techniques used to teach this are a combination of weight, balance, light hand signals and body position.

Basic Training

According to the Mounted Police Academy, Inc., the new mounted officer begins with a course that teaches the basics of mounted patrol equitation, equine anatomy and confirmation, equine psychology, basic and tactical formations for crowd control, sensory and obstacle training of the horse, VIP security, and mounted firearms training. The officer and horse will learn to negotiate obstacles such as barricades, vehicles, bridges, teeter-totters and hanging tarps. It is crucial that a rider be able to control every movement that the horse makes in order to direct his mount successfully through these obstacles.

Sensory Training

Obstacle training is the use of "physical" barriers as opposed to "perceived" barriers. The use of smoke, noise, flares and fumes are used to present new auditory, touch, visual and smell challenges for the horse to overcome. Once these new obstacles are introduced, with proper training they are combined with the physical obstacles. This is done to improve both the rider's and mount's trust and proficiency with each other.

Continual Training

After acquiring all these new skills, the new horse is ridden along with an experienced horse in traffic around the city and inner suburban areas or any place where he is likely to be used at a later date. Such training can take several months and must be done patiently. If they start getting skittish or react in a negative way, the decision has to be made whether to keep training them. Officers are compelled to stay focused in their daily routines because the horse will require training on a daily basis.

"The Sims: Makin' Magic" is an expansion to "The Sims," which allows players to travel to a new neighborhood, Magic Town, and purchase exotic and arcane goods. Amongst other oddities, the player can buy a dragon egg. After a day's wait, the egg will hatch into a full-grown dragon, replete with colored scales and fiery breath. Overall, dragons are highly self-sufficient and do not need much care. If players do neglect them, however, these pyromaniacal pets have the capacity to torch everything.

Instructions

1. Open the city map and go to Magic Town. Select Vicki the Vampiress's lot. Speak with her.

2. Purchase a Dragon's Nest from Vicki. It costs 49 MagiCoins and comes with a free dragon egg. If you don't have enough MagiCoins, you can earn them by attempting magic tricks while in Magic Town. You don't need to succeed to get the MagiCoins.

3. Return to your home. Your Sim will automatically drop the Dragon's Nest and egg. If you want to move it to a more convenient location, open Buy Mode and select the nest. Move it like you would any piece of furniture.

4. Click on the Dragon's Nest. You'll interact with the egg. The more you interact with it, the better the dragon's temperament will be once it's hatched. A dragon with a good temperament is less likely to burn down your house.

5. Wait a day for the dragon egg to hatch. It emerges full grown and its personality is unchanging. For the most part, you don't need to tend to it to keep it happy, as unlike a Sim, a dragon has few needs. It does, however, need to eat.

6. Open Buy Mode and purchase flowers. Plant them throughout your yard. The dragon's preferred meal is a flower, and it will eat three to six a day. Restock your flower supply when it starts to run low.

7. Interact with your dragon when its Social or Fun meters begin to drop. Alternatively, purchase a Dragon Chew Toy from Vicki and give it to your dragon. With a chew toy, your dragon won't need any attention from you.

Tiger cubs are similar to newborn babies in that they need to be cared for and fed around the clock. Just as you would feed a newborn baby every two hours, you must do the same for a tiger cub to ensure that they are getting the proper nutrition. It is important to understand that just because you are raising a tiger cub yourself, it does not mean that they will turn out to be a tame pet-they will always be wild animals.

Instructions

1. Feed the tiger cub out of the baby bottle until the cub is full or you have given him or her the recommended amount of milk.

2. Place the cub on your lap and lean it over your hand with your hand pressing against the belly.

3. Rub and pat its back as you would do with a newborn human until it burps at least twice.

4. Lay the cub on its back so that you can see its genitals.

5. Place a wet wipe over the genitals and gently wipe until the cub urinates and defecates. The cub should urinate after every feeding and defecate at least two to three times per day.

Housing

Squirrel monkeys can be kept indoors or outdoors although enclosures outside should have a heated sleeping area. Cage space is important; the more the better. A cage of 216 cubic feet or more is advisable for one monkey. The cage should be secure and in good repair and checked regularly as primates can be escape artists.

Feeding

Commercial primate foods are available and have many of the vitamins that squirrel monkeys need. The diet can also be supplemented with fruit, vegetables, seeds, boiled eggs and insects. This gives the monkeys a diet close to what would be eaten in the wild. Hiding food in the enclosure can also give the monkeys something to do and promote natural foraging behavior.

Social Needs

Squirrel monkeys are social animals and this has to be considered. Buying just one animal and leaving it alone in a cage is cruel. The monkeys either need companions or lots of personal attention and interaction with their owners. They also need toys and things to do so that they do not become bored. Keep things to climb, swing on or play with in the cage.

Health Needs

Squirrel monkeys require vaccinations and worming like any pet. Locate a veterinarian who has experience with primates. The average small animal vet may not know deal with the physiology of a squirrel monkey. The cage also has be kept clean and free of pests and vermin that may pass diseases to the monkeys. Pit Bulls are easily the most misunderstood and mistreated breed of dog. They have a reputation for being vicious, yet are no more prone to viciousness than any other breed. Only difference is: they are stronger than most breeds.

In spite of their unfair reputation, dog experts find that pit bulls are one of the most loyal, people-friendly and children-friendly breeds, as well as tend to score higher on temperament tests than most breeds. In fact, if you talk to people in cat and dog households, you often find out the dog is a pit bull, since they tend to get along well with cats.

Yet tragically, because of their undeserved reputation and the fact that many are turned in by irresponsible owners, shelters are filled with pit bulls that would make loving family pets--but due to their sheer numbers--are never given the chance.

This is why it's so important for people to consider pit bulls when wanting to add a dog to their family. If you are one of those wonderful people--here are some ways to go about it.

Instructions

1. Do some online research and educate yourself about pit bulls. A good place to start is a pit bull rescue group's website. These websites normally have information about the breed based on their experience with placing a variety of pit bulls in compatible homes.

2. Check your local animal shelter if you decide you are ready to adopt a pit bull. Chances are your local shelter will have a few to choose from. If you have a hard time entering an animal shelter (which many people do), most shelters list their available dogs online along with pictures and descriptions. In many cities, animal shelters will hold offsite mobile adoptions at places like pet supply stores and parks for people who would rather not visit the shelter (chances are you will find a pit bull or two or three). Shelters always do temperament testing before they adopt out an animal.

3. If you can't find a pit bull from the shelter, check with a local pit bull rescue group. If you don't have one in your immediate area, chances are there will be one not too far away; just search pit bull rescue along with your city or state. Pit bull rescue groups do behavior testing and will make sure a specific dog you have in mind is right for your family, home and lifestyle. They will also come out and do a "home check" to ensure that your home is right for the dog and vice versa. And rest assured, adopting a pit bull from a rescue is making room for them to save another pit bull from a shelter's "death row."

4. If you are more specific in the pit bull you are looking for, PetFinder.com is a great place to look. This website lists thousands of dogs up for adoption at shelters and rescue groups throughout the United States. You would just need to choose pit bull as the breed of dog and enter your zip code to search. You can also search by age group including "Baby," "Young," "Adult" and "Senior," as well as by gender if you like.

5. Once you have a pit bull in mind, ask a lot of questions. Start with the basics such as whether the dog is people-friendly (most dogs that are up for adoption are), likes children, is dog and cat friendly and what they know of the dog's background. Some are taken in as strays, but often times, dogs (especially pit bulls) are turned in to the shelter by their owners who may not be the most responsible. Many pit bulls are bought to breed, and some to fight, and when they are done serving their purpose, are given up. Also, people often buy pit bull puppies to be "cool" or seem "tough" and when the novelty wears off, they no longer want to keep them. For this reason, there are plenty of younger pit bulls available for adoption that are a year or two old. Also, be sure to find out if the pit bull may have been abused in the past, and keep in mind, most dogs that have been abused come around with just some love and patience, or perhaps need to work with an animal behaviorist or trainer that is experienced with the breed. Consider if you are in a situation to offer this.

Marmoset Monkey Habitat

The marmoset is only found in Central and South American tropical forests. Habitats vary from species to species, but as a general rule they favor tree filled areas, such as mountain and valley regions. These primates range in size from 7 to 16 inches with a tail 7 1/2 to 15 inches long. They weigh anywhere from 120 to 710 gs. They are predominantly located in areas of South America's Amazon region.

Atlantic Marmoset

The Atlantic marmoset genus includes the common marmoset, black-tufted marmoset, Wied's marmoset, white-headed marmoset, buff-headed marmoset and the buffy-tufted marmoset. This group prefers edge habitats, or forests disturbed by natural disasters or human intervention (also known as secondary forests). They are known for being very adaptable and doing well in many types of habitats. For example, the common marmoset lives in forest habitats and are endemic to Brazil. Their habitat range is in the central and northeastern forests along the Atlantic coast. It extends inland across to the Rio Grande. They are found in Brazil's states of Pariba, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceara, Pernambuco, Alagoas and Piaui.

Atlantic Marmoset Habitat Climate

The Atlantic marmoset habitat is predominantly in the caatinga, cerrado and Brazilian Atlantic forest regions of Brazil. In the caatinga region the temperature averages 75 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit and annual rainfall ranges from 11.8 inches to 3.28 feet. The dry season in the region lasts seven to 10 months. This climate encourages the growth of semidesert vegetation, such as thorn forests, spiny shrubs and low trees. The cerrado region's dry season is not as extreme, lasting about five months. Overall temperatures are cooler, about 68 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Rainfall averages 2.46 to 6.56 feet. The Brazilian Atlantic forest region's temperature ranges from 66 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit and average annual rainfall is between 3.28 and 6.56 feet.

Amazonian Marmoset

The Amazonian marmoset genus includes 13 different species of marmosets, including the silvery marmoset. Each species lives in different habitats. For example, the silvery marmoset has a very small habitat range. The only place they're found in the wild is in the tropical rainforests of northern Brazil in the Amazon basin. As of 2010, their habitat was threatened due to logging in the area.

Roosmalens' Dwarf Marmoset

The Roosmalens' Dwarf Marmoset is in its own genus. It is also called the black-crowned dwarf marmoset. This marmoset lives in the Amazon rainforest on the east bank of the lower Madeira River and the west bank of Brazil's Aripuana River.

Pygmy Marmoset

Pygmy marmosets are the smallest true monkeys in the world according to the Smithsonian National Zoological Park. They live in tropical forests and along rivers. Their habitat range is in South American in Colombia, Peru, northern Bolivia and Brazil. These marmosets need habitats with abundant trees. They need to hide in the holes in old-growth trees to avoid predators.

The North American flying squirrel, more typically referred to as the northern flying squirrel, primarily lives in Alaska, Canada, the Pacific Northwest, the northern Midwest and the northeastern United States, with spotty populations in parts of Appalachia. The rodent lives in cavities in trees and logs, building nests from twigs and leaves. They like to live near rivers and streams. They are legal to keep as pets, and you can typically buy them from breeders. Flying squirrels require a specific diet regimen.

Instructions

1. Serve food in a shallow dish in the squirrel's cage to make it easily accessible.

2. Feed them nuts and acorns, as well as fungi and lichens. You can probably find this food for yourself if you live near a forest or park, or you might be able to buy this type of feed form a local feed store. You might also give them rodent lab blocks or mushrooms.

3. Supplement the diet with fruits, buds and sap as well as insects or bird eggs on occasion. This will add essential vitamins and nutrients to the squirrel's diet. Instructions

1. Choose a dog breed that is suited to helping you with the specific tasks you are unable to perform on your own. If you need to be alerted to nearby sounds, choose a dog with excellent hearing, such as a German Shepherd. If you need a dog to perform a physical task such as bringing you your medicine or phone, Labradors or Golden Retrievers make great choices due to the size and strength of the breed.

2. Train your dog to complete the task through a rewards system. This form of training is commonly known as "positive reinforcement training."

Teaching your dog to sit is accomplished by rewarding the dog when it sits on command. Over time, the dog begins to realize that when it sits on command, it is rewarded with a treat and praise. The same training method is used to teach your dog any task. If you need the dog to bring your cane, give a simple command such as "cane," put the cane in its mouth and reward the dog. Now, instead of rewarding the dog for picking up the cane, make the dog bring it to you by calling its name when it has the cane in its mouth. Reward the dog with a treat and praise. 3. Acclimate the dog to various social situations. This is known as socialization. Depending on the task, your dog will presumably have to complete tasks amid distractions. Taking your dog to the park, pet store and on short trips around town will get it used to dealing with distractions. Once you can keep your dog's attention in a distracting situation, start to give it commands and reward it when it completes the task.

4. Outfit your service dog with the correct equipment. The ADA has no specific guidelines on how your dog must be dressed, but others should know that your dog is a service dog. If your dog is going to pull your wheelchair, you will need a leash that clips onto your chair. You may also outfit your dog with a vest of some sort that will alert the public that it is a service dog and prevent people from rushing to pet it while it is performing a service for you.

5. Search for local organizations that offer certification tests and take the test with your dog once you feel it is ready. Becoming ADA certified is as easy as passing the ADA certification test. Large chain pet stores often have fliers that provide information on local places and times to test your dog.

"Polydactyly" means "many fingers."

Most cats have five toes on their front paws and four toes on each of their back paws. Polydactyl cats have extra toes on at least one paw due to a natural genetic mutation. "Polydactyly" comes from the Greek words for "many fingers," and while this inherited condition varies from cat to cat, there may be up to three extra toes on any given paw. Though polydactyly does not seem to offer any major physical benefits, the history and uniqueness of polydactyl cats are advantages in making them an attractive choice as a pet.

Unusual Appearance

Though polydactyl cats are not uncommon, some owners and cat-lovers prize them for their unusual appearance. There are even some cat breeders who focus on raising polydactyl cats for sale because of their uniqueness. This practice is controversial, however, because of the already excessive cat population.

Interesting History

One of the greatest advantages polydactyl cats have over other "normal" cats is their interesting and remarkable history. According to the July 2007 issue of "Catnip," the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine newsletter, the polydactyl cats currently in the United States may be descendants of felines who came to America with English Puritans in the 1600s. The newsletter also states that it is possible that the polydactyl population is smaller in Europe because many of the cats were killed out of superstition centuries ago.

Ernest Hemingway is the most famous polydactyl cat enthusiast, which is why these cats are sometimes referred to as "Hemingway cats." The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is currently home to around 60 cats, half of which are polydactyl. Some of these cats are descendants of a six-toed cat given to Hemingway by a ship's captain. President Theodore Roosevelt also reportedly owned a polydactyl cat named Slippers, who was one of the first cats to reside in the White House.

Good Luck

Some people believe that polydactyl cats bring good luck. Supposedly, early sailors heading to America were some of the first proponents of this belief, and brought polydactyl cats along for the journey from England. These sailors thought that not only would the cats provide good luck, but that they had advanced ability to catch mice and to maintain their balance. Norwegians even refer to polydactyl cats as "ship's cats."

Improved Dexterity?

According to Sarah Hartwell of MessyBeast.com, some people claim that the extra toes of a polydactyl cat allow greater dexterity. Hartwell also describes folk tales in some areas of the country which maintain that polydactyl cats are expert hunters and fishers, and have even been known to walk more easily in snow than normal cats. Despite these claims, there is no real evidence that polydactyly offers a physical advantage. At the same time, there is no evidence that polydactyl cats face any major disadvantages, either.

Give A Dog A Shot

There are some chronic illnesses that require repeat injections for some dogs; for example, allergies or insulin-dependent diabetes. Treatment options include loading up the dog, driving to the veterinarian, restraining the dog from aggressive or romantic encounters in the waiting room, lugging the dog up onto the exam table and then, following the injection, driving home and doing this multiple times a week. The other option is to learn to inject the dog at home. Hmmmm...

Instructions

1. Find someone to assist you, at least until you become proficient doing the injections.

2. Draw up the medication. Swab the top of the medication vial with an alcohol swab. Turn the vial upside down. Insert the needle. Draw out the correct dosage as measured by the calibration on the syringe. Expel any air bubbles from the syringe. Replace the needle guard over the syringe.

3. Place your dog in a position to your side, with its head facing forward, roughly under your arm. If you have an assistant helping you, have the assistant settle the dog and steady its position. At this point, the most important goal should be for everyone to exhibit a sense of calm and control-the dog included.

4. Put the syringe in a place where it can be easily reached. Grab the skin behind the dog's head, halfway between its shoulder blades. Gently lift the skin until it is raised in an inverted "v" (also described as a "tent" of skin).

5. Have your assistant remove the needle guard from the needle and hand it to you (or remove it by grasping the guard between your teeth if no one is assisting you.)

6. Hold the syringe between your thumb and middle finger, ring finger or both. Pierce the tent of skin with the needle angled slightly down so that it does not simply go through the tent. Inject the medication.

Train A Dog For Beginning Search And Rescue

The key to training a dog for Search and Rescue is pretty basic. It is all about teaching your dog to turn his nose on. This comes naturally to most canines, and the rest is up to the handler. Most dogs are highly driven by food, so that is where the basic training for Search and Rescue begins. It does not matter if your dog is a purebred or a mixed breed. It is all about what kind of drive she has.

Instructions

Begin with Footstep Tracking

1. Plan on "short feeding" your dog the day before you begin training. Simply feed your dog a light meal of dry food in the morning the day before training, then nothing else but water the rest of the day. He will be hungry the next morning, and ready to work for his food.

2. Choose a harness that you will use only for tracking. This way, when you put it on the dog, she knows it is time to go to work.

3. Slice up five or six hot dogs into pieces that are about 1/4 inch thick. Put the slices in a resealable plastic bag, tie your fanny pack around your waist, put the hot dogs in there, and get ready to lay the tracks.

4. Leave your dog in the house, or in the car if you have taken him to a different location, while you lay the tracks. Wearing work boots, or a solid soled sneaker, create a "scent pad" with your feet by disturbing the soil. Place three or four hot dog pieces in this area. Walk about twenty paces. Make defined steps with the heel of your shoe by digging into the ground, then dragging your foot to continue the scent forward. Go left and right just like you would walk, and drop a slice of hot dog into every heel mark.

5. Create another "pad" at the end of this track, and either use a pile of hot dogs, some other tasty treat, or your dog's favorite toy for the reward, depending on what your dog will respond to best.

6. Pump your dog up and get her excited about this "game." Guide her to the start pad, and give her the command as you point her nose to the food on the scent pad. The standard for this is SUK ... pronounced "sook". It is a German command that means "search." Your dog should go for the food, then continue along the track back and forth, picking up each hot dog piece in each footstep. Guide her, encourage her, and remember the idea here is to teach her to keep her nose to the ground. Make it a big celebration when your dog reaches the pad at the end and give her the reward.

7. Continue this training for several weeks, and slowly begin to incorporate turns in your tracks to you make them longer. Go 20 paces, then make a 90 degree turn, and continue for about another 30 paces, and so on. It is a good idea to leave some small markers or flags at the turns, so that you can remember where they are, and help your dog if needed. Begin to slowly pull the food off of the tracks. Start by dropping a hot dog in every other step, and taper it down from there.

Make the Transition to Hot Tracks

8. Incorporate the "decoy." This means you need a friend or family member to basically play hide and seek with your dog. There is no food involved in this type of tracking, with the exception of the reward at the end. Locate a park or a large field that has some trees so your decoy has a good place to hide.

9. Choose a scent article, such as a piece of clothing that your decoy has worn or held in her hands for a while. This will be the starting point for hot tracks. Have the decoy pet and cuddle your dog before he goes to hide, so your dog will pick up a lot of her scent.

10. Have the decoy drop the scent article on the ground at the starting point, then let your dog watch him run away, just for the first few seconds. Say things like "Where is he going????" Then turn your dog away so he cannot see where the decoy is going, and where he is actually hiding. Make sure the decoy drags his feet and stomps up the ground in some spots to create scent for your dog. He should be out of sight, behind a tree or a bush, at the end of the track so your dog cannot see him. You should know his hiding place, so you can tell if your dog is tracking in the right direction.

11. Wait for five to 10 minutes to let the scent settle into the ground. Then do basically the same start that you did with footstep tracking. Take your dog to the scent article and make sure she gets a good whiff of it. Then say "Sook." Or at this point, you can even change the command to "Find him!". By now your dog should have learned to use her nose, and she will likely get right into the hunt. Do not talk too much as she is tracking. You can simply use encouraging words like "good girl" when you see she is on the correct track. Be patient. When the dog finds the decoy, even if you had to help a little, praise and reward the dog.

12. Prepare to move to the next level, if your dog is doing well with the hide and seek game after a few weeks. This would be the time to contact Search and Rescue teams in your area, to see if they are looking for volunteers. At this point, you will need professional training from a team leader to see if your dog really has what it takes to earn certification.

1. Allow your dog outside for brief periods so she can eat grass. Grass helps a dog vomit the offending food and can often ease the dog's symptoms.

2. Stop feeding the dog for 24 hours if he has diarrhea. He may refuse all food anyway, but make sure he doesn't consume anything. His stomach and digestive system need to purge the offending foods before you introduce any more food.

3. Keep a full bowl of water available at all times. Dehydration can set in if the dog has gone a long period without eating or drinking.

4. Feed the dog very bland food after 24 hours has passed. Good choices include boiled chicken and plain, boiled white rice. See how she reacts to the food and determine if she can handle going back on her regular food soon.

5. Take the dog to the veterinarian if his symptoms persist longer than 24 hours. He may have a virus in his intestines that needs medication.

1. Place brightly colored fake rubber snakes on the vehicle in order to scare away birds. Snakes are a natural enemy of birds. Be sure to remove the fake snakes before driving.

2. Hang CDs in the carport or general parking area. Birds are afraid of the shiny reflection from CDs and they will avoid the car if it is parked underneath the CDs. Simply thread CDs through some fishing line or a thin rope, and secure the CDs with knots. Hang the line across the parking area. For best results hang multiple lines of CDs above the car.

3. Cover the vehicle with a car cover. The birds are less likely to be attracted to this cover, and they will land elsewhere.

4. Install a visual bird deterrent which will frighten birds and prevent them from landing on a vehicle. Deterrents include replicas of owls, coyotes or fox. These can be purchased from some online and mass retailers, as well as from certain catalog companies.

3. Apply cornstarch or white grooming powder on the dog. Put it on your hands and then rub or brush into the coat. Be sure to brush any excess off the dog. Apply this everywhere but on the muzzle and around the eyes of the dog.

4. A white coat can light up a room.

Apply the grooming chalk carefully around the muzzle, tips of the ears and near the eyes.

The Best Dog Breeds With Cats

Dogs and cats often live happily together.

Almost any breed of dog can be good with cats, especially if they are raised with them. Terriers (jack russells, airedales, fox terriers) and sighthounds (greyhounds, whippets, salukis) are more likely to chase and even kill cats, since these breeds were bred for hunting. Consider the cat's personality as well. A "dog savvy" cat is less likely to trigger a dog's prey instinct, but an aggressive cat can hurt a small dog.

Golden Retriever

Golden retrievers, like other retrieving breeds, have a natural tendency to be gentle and have "soft mouths," since they have been bred to retrieve game for hunters carefully without mangling it. Goldens have a well-deserved reputation as good family dogs, because they are rarely aggressive. Although a young golden may be boisterous and want to chase cats, it is less likely to harm them. A cat who calmly stands its ground instead of running away will defuse a dog's playful desire to chase it; a dog can't chase a cat that's sitting still.

Great Pyrenees

Despite its impressive size (they can weigh over 100 lbs) the Great Pyrenees is calm and watchful over its "flock," including the family cat. Like most livestock guardian dogs, the Pyrenees is a faithful guardian and patient with the smallest animals, although it may try to repel strange cats, perceiving them as a threat. The American Kennel Club standard describes the Pyrenees as a tolerant and quiet dog with its family, but one who won't hesitate to defend its territory from intruders.

Bichon Frise

The bichon frise is a gentle, playful dog, and according to the American Kennel Club (AKC), "a cheerful attitude is the hallmark of the breed." The intelligent little bichon is bred as a companion dog. Since it's not much bigger than the average house cat, a bichon and a friendly cat can make good playmates, especially when raised together. When introducing a cat and a dog for the first time, give each space to investigate each other without undue stress by using crates or baby gates. A frightened or aggressive cat can lash out and scratch a dog and small dogs are especially vulnerable to cat claws.

Boxer

Many dogs who are tolerant with children are also tolerant with cats and the boxer is no exception. A medium-sized dog with a long working history, including war time messenger dogs, property guardians and hunting, the modern boxer is primarily purchased as a family pet. They are especially gentle with children, and most are very good with cats.

Mixed Breed

Mixed breed dogs have temperaments as varied as their looks, and many mixed breed dogs can be very good with cats. Most dogs regardless of breed or breed mix, if well-trained and raised with cats, will be tolerant, if not affectionate, with the family cat. When adopting an adult dog, look for one that was raised with cats, or has been kept in a foster home with a cat. Bringing an already cat-tolerant dog into a cat-owning family is a lot easier than getting a strange dog and hoping that everything will work out OK.

Introduce An Adopted Cat To A Resident Dog

When you have a pet dog and decide to adopt a new cat to add to your household, you need to take certain steps to ensure each animal develops a calm relationship with the other. Some cats and dogs will bond and become great friends, while others may only tolerate each other's presence. Provide each of your pets with a calm, relaxed environment to reduce the stress of meeting a new animal. Make sure that each gets praise and attention to make the experience a pleasant one.

Instructions

1. Set up a room for your new cat to live for at least the first few weeks after it comes home.

Give the cat a litter box, food and water bowls, soft blanket, cat bed or pillow, cat tree or cubby hole, and a few cat toys. Allow your dog to inspect and smell all of the new items. Have everything ready before your new cat's arrival.

2. Bring your cat directly into its room in a cat carrier without letting the cat or resident dog meet each other. This reduces the stress on the new cat. Allow your cat to acclimate to its new surrounding for one week. Bond with your new cat by visiting it in its room during this time, and playing with it until it becomes comfortable with you or any other human members of the family. Give your dog an equal amount of attention so it does not view the cat as competition for your affection.

3. Rub a towel on your new cat and rub another towel on your dog to obtain the scent of each pet.

Place the dog-scented towel into the room with your cat, and place the cat-scented towel in an area your dog frequents to introduce each animals to the other's scent. Put the towels in areas such as near food dishes or on pet beds. Cats and dogs rely much more on scent than appearance, and this will familiarize each pet with the other's scent before a face-to-face meeting, according to The Humane Society of the United States.

4. Feed the dog and cat on opposite sides of the door to the cat's room.

This will allow each animal to smell the other under the door during the pleasant experience of eating. Give each animal verbal praise for calm behavior.

5. Open the door to the cat's room and place a baby gate or screen door at the entrance to allow the dog and cat to see and smell each other, but not physically interact.

Give your dog treat rewards when it behaves calmly in the presence of the cat and vice-versa. Calmly close the door if your dog becomes overly aggressive and bears its teeth, growls or barks. Walk away and introduce them again through the gate or screen when the animals have calmed down.

6. Put your dog on a leash and allow your cat out of its room.

Have your dog stay in place and reward it with food rewards to ensure calm behavior. Supervise any initial interactions between the two pets when they discover each other. Never force interactions as this only serves to stress the animals and make each view the other as a negative experience. Continue to use verbal praise and treat rewards for each animal during the introduction. If your dog shows any signs of aggression, do not punish it. Instead, walk your dog quickly away, restrain it temporarily in another room, and place your cat back into its safe room.

7. Keep your dog on a leash for the first few weeks that the animal are in your home together.

You can tether your dog to you with a longer leash attached to your waist for ease of moving about your home if the dog's behavior shows little or no signs of aggression. Make sure to always provide an escape route for the cat or a high perch for it to run to if the dog becomes aggressive or gives chase to it.

8. Supervise the animals together once your dog is off of its leash after the first three to four weeks the two live together with few to no issues.

Young kittens need supervision with dogs until they reach three to four months old; older cats may need supervision for the first month after your dog is off of its leash. Keep the cat in its room when you or other adults are not in the home to supervise its interactions with the dog. If your dog shows no signs of aggression after this probationary period, allow each animal to interact without supervision.

To make bulls easier to control and handle, the bull may be given a nose ring. Like humans and many other animals, bulls have a piece of tissue called a septum in between their nostrils. This tissue is very sensitive so the bull becomes compliant and easily led when a person grabs hold of the ring directly or puts a staff or a piece of rope into the ring. The ring in a bull's nose acts in a manner very similar to the bit on a horse bridle.

The Select Few

Not all bulls have rings in their noses. Rings are usually only put into a bull's nose if it is believed that he will be handled often, such as those animals that will be used for breeding purposes or who will be taken to livestock shows.

Methods

The rings placed in a bull's septum are hinged. The bull is given a local anesthetic and then one of two piercing methods is utilized. Either a self-piercing ring is placed into the septum and closed or a sharp piercing nail is used to puncture a hole in the septum and then a ring is placed in the hole.

If a bull is going to have a ring in his nose, the procedure to put it there is usually performed when he is from 6 to 12 months old.
