1. Take your American Bulldog for routine medical exams and stay current on vaccinations, flea and heartworm preventative. You can also do a monthly home exam of the skin, eyes, ears, nose, teeth and gums.

2. Spay/Neuter your American Bulldog. Spaying females before the first heat prevents breast cancer and decreases the likelihood of uterine infections. Neutering males before the age of four prevents testicular cancer, helps maintain a healthy prostate and curbs aggression.

3. See to it that your American Bulldog has routine dental care, which includes periodic professional scalings. You may also choose to brush your American Bulldog's teeth.

4. Feed your American Bulldog a healthy diet with the proper balance of protein, carbs, fats, fiber, vitamins and minerals. If feeding a commercial dog food, choose a quality brand with meat as the first ingredient.

5. Although an average-sized yard is ideal for an American Bulldog, they can live in an apartment with the proper amount of exercise such as long daily walks and frequent romps at the dog park. They are relatively inactive indoors, therefore routine exercise is a must.

6. Make sure your American Bulldog is well socialized around people/animals at an early age. This is important due to their strong protective instincts. Obedience training should be consistent and gentle.

7. Brush your American Bulldog's coat with a firm bristle brush or rubber mitt. They are average shedders. Bathe them when necessary. They don't require frequent baths, so every few months should normally suffice.

A cow should not be reunited with her calf less than 30 days following weaning, according to veterinarian Gary Kaufman of Scottsdale, Arizona. At least 30 days are necessary for the cow's milk to dry up.

Considerations

Kaufman acknowledges that conditions may affect the time needed for separation.

Breeds

The breed of cow is an important factor. For example, Brahman and longhorn cows may allow nursing to begin again after as long as four months, while English breeds will usually prevent nursing regardless of the length of separation.

Individual Characteristic

According to Kenny Behling; owner-operator of Behling Ranch in Clovis, California, the individual characteristics of the cow and calf are the most significant determining factors for length of weaning. Personality is critical, as are health and condition.

Rule of Thumb

A cow becomes accustomed to separation within 7 to 14 days. However, Behling says that buyers buy only calves weaned at least 45 days because they experience less stress and are less susceptible to illness. He therefore suggests 30 to 45 days as a rule of thumb for maintaining separation.

About Rottweiler Dogs

Rottweilers have a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years.

The American Kennel Club classifies Rottweilers as part of the working-class group. The breed was developed in Germany and Rottweilers were commonly employed as police dogs during World War I.

Breed History

According to the American Kennel Club, Rottweilers descended from a Mastiff-like breed called a drover dog. Drovers were used by the ancient Romans as herding animals. Rottweilers were recognized as an official breed in 1931.

Identification

Rottweilers stand between 22 and 27 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 85 and 130 lb. They have black coats with brown or rust-colored markings on the face. These dogs have muscular, powerful bodies.

Exercise Needs

Rottweilers are an active breed and need a great deal of exercise. They need long daily walks or runs to stay healthy.

Temperament

3. Teach your dog walk on a leash. He should be able to walk next to you without any dragging or pulling.

4. Take your dog to places where it can safely get used to loud noises and commotion. Dog shows are usually loud and busy.

5. Train your dog to stand with all four legs directly underneath its body. You can also use whatever position will look best for judging.

6. Attend a training session with an adult handler or a junior handler conformation class. Be able to present your dog for an examination with a judge.

Emergency Shelter Grants Program

According to the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development, organizations looking to remodel or rehabilitate a building for use as a shelter can also apply for grant assistance through the Emergency Shelter Grants Program. Cats suffer from many of the same respiratory ailments as humans. The vast majority of maladies will resolve, even if left untreated, in 7 to 10 days. As with humans, home remedies for cats with congestion can ease their discomfort dramatically.

Symptoms of feline upper respiratory infections may include sneezing, runny eyes, nasal discharge, heavy shedding and nasal and oral or nasal ulcers.

Causes of Congestion in Cats

Ninety percent of upper respiratory infections stem from two sources: feline herpes, also known as rhinotracheitis, and feline calicivirus. Neither can be spread from cats to humans.

These viruses tend to recur in cats and can spread to other cats, so it is wise to have them vaccinated.

Persian cats are particularly susceptible to these viruses because of their flattened facial features. Kittens are highly susceptible because their immunity systems are not fully developed. If they can get through those early months without an infection, they typically outgrow the risk. Outdoor cats, cats from shelters and cats that share a food dish are also susceptible.

These viruses are often triggered by stressful events such as spaying, neutering, declawing or the introduction of a new animal into his environment. The symptoms typically materialize 1 week after the stressful event.

Home Remedies

Humidity will help to ease your cat's congestion, so put him in the bathroom while you shower.

Wipe away crusty discharges from her eyes and nose with a warm damp cloth and try to remove any visible blockages. Suctioning is helpful.

Without adequate hydration, your cat can lose electrolytes and even suffer kidney damage. Keep him drinking, giving him broth or water from canned tuna if he needs encouragement.

You can help your cat boost her immunity with vitamin C. The dose is 250 mg per day, but decrease the amount if diarrhea develops. Another immunity booster is Echinacea. Give you cat 1 to 2 drops, per pound of weight, 3 times daily. Do not continue this treatment longer than 2 weeks.

Pediatric nose drops may be helpful in relieving severe congestion in your cat. Put 1 drop in each of her nostrils, 3 times daily, for 3 to 5 days.

Do not give aspirin to cats.

Standard Medical Treatment

Veterinarians typically treat cats with congestion by prescribing tetracycline. The drug is not effective against viruses but helps to prevent secondary bacterial infections.

When to Seek Medical Treatment

If your cat is so congested that she can breathe only with her mouth open, loses her appetite or is listless, take her to a veterinarian immediately. These are signs of high fever and bacterial infections, and she could die without medical care.

Pluck The Coat Of An Irish Wolfhound

The Irish Wolf Hound is a good-natured and gentle, giant sized dog. It is a very ancient breed of dog used for hunting wolves. They are very loyal and great with children. They're very friendly and not very good as watch dogs, but due to their size, are quite often intimidating enough. The Irish Wolf Hound has coarse, wiry hair which is not difficult to groom but does require regular attention and plucking in order to keep it in excellent condition and good appearance.

Instructions

1. Find a room where your dog is most comfortable and lay an old sheet on the floor if you need to or use a grooming table. Get your dog to relax and stand still.

2. Use one hand to hold the skin taut in an area of the body you wish to begin removing top-layer hairs. With the other hand, hold a few hairs down at a time and pull between thumb and forefinger in the direction of hair growth. You can use rubber gloves for this or sprinkle grooming powder on the dogs coat to make it easier to grip the hair.

3. Repeat this section by section until you have completed the whole body or you can do one area at a time whenever you see stray hairs that need to be pulled out.

Pluck the coat at least two or three times a year. This method is called "hand plucking."

4. Pluck the coat using a blunt, stripping knife instead of using your fingers (you should find this in a pet store). This is called "stripping the coat." Take the stripping knife and hold it perpendicular to hair growth. Grip the hair between your thumb and the knife and give a quick pull. Repeat this until you have finished the whole coat or do one area at a time as needed.

5. Brush or comb your dogs coat after stripping or plucking. You may give him a bath afterward, but not before plucking, since wet hair makes the job almost impossible.

Teacup Chihuhuas are not a separate breed.

Very small dogs appeal to pet owners for various reasons, and dogs small enough to be classified by breeders as teacup are often sold at higher prices than their slightly larger counterparts. Smaller-than-average Chihuahuas, for example, are often sold as teacup dogs.

Breed Classification

According to the AKC, regardless of what some breeders and sellers may tell their customers, teacup Chihuahuas are not a separate breed, but are actually just very small dogs. The AKC and other breeding associations do not recognize teacup breeds.

Size

The standard size for a purebred Chihuahua is between 6 and 8 pounds. A full-grown Chihuahua weighing less than 6 pounds is sometimes advertised and sold as a teacup dog. Very small Chihuahua puppies, some of which weigh only 1 to 2 pounds, are also often sold as teacup dogs.

Smooth Coat

Smooth coated Chihuahuas come in a wide variety of colors, and have short, slightly wavy coats that require occasional grooming.

Long Coat

Long coated Chihuahuas are the result of interbreeding with Pekinese, Pomeranians and Papillons, and have long, soft, feathery coats that require constant grooming.

Considerations

Some dogs sold or advertised as teacup Chihuahuas may be smaller then average as the result of unscrupulous breeding practices, including inducing premature labor in pregnant Chihuahuas and underfeeding puppies so they will weigh less. Always purchase puppies from reputable sources.

Private rescue centers and privately funded shelters all can be more exclusive and find it easier to get property since they rarely deal with livestock and larger animals.

2. Set up your company. You will need to be a registered company or a registered charity; in the U.S. this means you will probably become a 501(3)c, which is a non-profit organization, even if you have a cute name like "Little Critters Rescue." This designation makes you eligible to register property as belonging to a tax-exempt company or charity.

3. Get a zoning map. Go to your local clerk of courts and ask get a map that shows locations suitable for housing of a kennel or livestock. Identify areas that are most appropriate to your mission. An enclosed shelter will usually, for zoning purposes, qualify for more locations than a shelter that accepts livestock and houses them outdoors.

4. Engage a real estate broker. Someone who knows these zoning restrictions can also often help in the process and can assure that later problems are avoided by ensuring the land is suitable for the purpose of rescuing animals. It's probable that you will have to pay a broker a percentage of the purchase price when you close on your property, so make her earn her fee.

5. Buy a Krawk Transmogrification or a Krawk Morphing potion from the Auction House or Trading Post.

6. Feed the potion to one of your Neopets. It will turn that pet into a mutant Krawk. If you used a Transmogrification potion, your pet will be mutant-colored; if you use a Morphing potion, it will be whatever color the potion specifies.

7. Repaint your mutant Krawk, if you want. Buy a paintbrush in whatever color you want your Krawk to be, take it to the Rainbow Fountain and paint it.

2. Pick up an application to register your dog's microchip from the vet. Since your vet will typically be implanting a specific brand, they will supply you with the registration form.

3. Complete the application form. Typically it will ask for the owner's name, address, phone number, an alternate contact person and contact information, veterinarian information, pet's name, species, gender, description, medication information, and microchip number (supplied by vet after insertion). A payment will be required. This is often a $20 fee, with discounts for multiple pet registrations.

When a dog is registered with the American Kennel Club by the breeder or the dog's first owner, the dog normally carries that name for life. American Kennel Club (AKC) registered names cannot be any longer than 36 characters, including spaces, apostrophes and hyphens; must be written in the English alphabet; and can't include Roman numerals. If you don't like the registered name of your dog, it is possible to change the name later in life, as long as you follow the regulations set forth by the AKC.

Instructions

1. Choose a new name that fits the regulations for registered names as described above.

2. Obtain and fill out a Dog Name Change Authorization application from the AKC. This can be downloaded from the AKC's website.

3. Obtain written consent for the name change from your dog's breeder if your dog was registered by the breeder, or if the dog's name contains what the AKC calls a "Registered Kennel Name."

Northern Georgia provides a wide variety of habitats, and as a result has hundreds of species of animals and plants, both native to the state and widely spread across the United States. Even in a small part of the state, there is a truly incredible amount of biodiversity to observe and learn from.

Predators

There are two dangerous predators in the Georgia food chain; the bear and the coyote. Bears are native to the entire state of Georgia, with approximately one bear for every square mile. Safety precautions must be taken to avoid luring bears to your campsite or antagonizing them. Coyotes are also present statewide in Georgia and can be extremely dangerous to both humans and household pets. Coyotes should be handled by trained animal control experts when they become a problem, and they should be otherwise avoided.

Other Mammals

There are many other mammals in North Georgia, but the most notable common species are raccoons, rats, bats, squirrels, beavers and woodchucks. Most of these can be found in North Georgia's considerable woods, but some that scavenge, such as raccoons and squirrels, can also be found in the cities, sometimes in great numbers. Beaver populations have been declining slightly due to the damage caused to their habitat, especially around the Atlanta area, but there are still plenty of them to see.

Reptiles and Amphibians

Georgia has nearly 150 species of reptiles, many of which are in the southern part of the state. Unique to northern Georgia is the Pigeon Mountain salamander, a tiny brown salamander discovered in 1972. The glass lizard is also a unique species, as it has no arms or legs. Mud and rainbow snakes are common, and so are dangerous species like the cottonmouth and the copperhead. Be careful when approaching snakes so as not to be attacked.

Birds

Over 130 species of birds call north Georgia home. Due to the climate of the Blue Ridge mountains, some birds you'll find only in north Georgia include the yellow-bellied sap sucker, the winter wren and the dark-eyed junco. These can only be found on the mountains, in elevations above 1,000 feet. More common birds include the northern cardinal and the peregrine falcon, which had nearly been wiped out by DDT, but has made a comeback.

Bushes, Shrubs, and Vines

There are hundreds of plant species native to the entirety of north Georgia. A few notable examples include the devil's walking stick, a tall, thorny red shrub; the aromatic red basil bush; the button bush with it's unique round flowers; the sharp, spiky beargrass; and the common yellowroot shrub. One plant to particularly look out for is the honeycup, with its wonderful-smelling white flowers; it's very rare in Georgia, so it's a real treat to find one.

Trees

Finally, there are the trees of northern Georgia. The yellow buckeye is found nowhere else in the state. Other common trees are the river birch; the sugar maple, which offers fiery colors in the autumn; three different species of the hickory; both white and green ash; and the beech. Of particular value is the black walnut, which was often planted near old homesteads for its ability to secrete juglone, a chemical that kills or slows the growth of other plants. It's a valuable tree for its juglone and also its wood.

The idea that animals in captivity always live longer than animals in the wild was debunked in a study conducted by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The group followed elephants in European zoos and found they had significantly shorter lifespans than their counterparts in the wild. However, many other species of animals do live longer in captivity.

Lifespan Statistics

The biggest problem in determining where animals live longer is that many of the statistics we have on animal lifespans come from captive animals. Without a thorough study of the lifespans of different species of animals in the wild, it is not clear whether some species live longer in the wild or in captivity.

Stress

The study of elephants in European zoos determined stress and improper handling leading stressful situations were the main causes of shortened lifespans. Visitors to zoos can cause animals to become stressed, especially during busy times and by creating loud noises like banging on enclosures. Baby animals are particularly vulnerable, as stress can cause their fur to change colors and lead to anorexia and death.

Accidental Death

Accidents that animals would not be subjected to in the wild can lead to death for captive animals. At the Tulsa Zoo and Living Museum, improper handling led to a broken neck and subsequent death of one giraffe, while hypothermia caused by inhospitable weather conditions caused the death of another giraffe. The same zoo saw other animal deaths occurring as results of an extended power outage, poisoning and escapes from enclosures.

Lack of Dangers Faced in the Wild

Despite stress and accidental causes of death, the majority of animals kept in captivity live longer than their counterparts in the wild. A large reason for this is that, in captivity, they are not in danger of being attacked and killed by predators. Thanks to on-site veterinary care, many captive animals also do not face the dangers of infant mortality and diseases that often kill animals in the wild. Ready access to food and shelter for captive animals also leads to an extended lifespan.

One of the most entertaining things about "The Sims 2" is the ability to modify individual Sims using a program called "The Sims 2 Body Shop." "Body Shop" comes with the "Sims 2" game, so no additional purchase is necessary. Skin modifications for Sims such as eye color, hairstyles, clothing and skin tones can be downloaded for free from several resources, including The Sims Resource, Liana Sims 2 and XM Sims. Once the desired skins are downloaded, they can be utilized in the Body Shop, where a new Sim can be built and added to a Sims 2 game.

Instructions

Making Custom Sims

1. Click on the "Start" button and go to "EA Games" > "The Sims 2" > "The Sims 2 Body Shop." The "Body Shop" program will open. Click on "Build Sims."

2. Select the "Build or Clone Sims" button. Then, click on the green box with the "+" sign. This will add a new custom Sim.

3. Choose the sex, age and body shape of the Sim using the buttons along the left side of the Build screen. Then, click on the "Genetics" button to change skin tone, eye color and hair.

4. Select the button that looks like a Sim face with the genetics sign next to it to choose facial features. Custom shaping can be done by clicking on the button that looks like a Sim face with a monkey wrench next to it.

5. Click on the "Mirror" button to choose eyebrows, whiskers, facial hair, makeup, face paint and glasses. Then click on the "Clothes" button to select outfits for the custom Sim.

6. Click on the "OK" button that looks like a check mark.

Adding Sims to the Game

7. Open "The Sims 2" by going to "Start" > "EA Games" > "The Sims 2" > "The Sims 2." Once the game has loaded, make sure the "Enable Custom Content" box has an "X" in it.

8. Select the desired neighborhood. Then, click the "Add a Family" button.

9. Type in a last name for the Sim(s) and hit the "Create a Sim" button. At the top of the box that appears, select the "Choose Existing Sim" button. Select the Sim created in the Body Shop and hit the "OK" button.

10. Enter the name of the Sim, then hit the "6" button to navigate to the "Aspirations and Turn Ons and Offs" section. Select an aspiration for the Sim, and choose the Sim's turn-ons and turn-offs. Hit the "Accept Sim" button. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until all of the desired custom Sims (in one family) are added. Hit the "Accept Family" button.

11. Choose the custom Sim(s) and select a pre-existing home or custom-built home for them to live in. Begin game play.

The Siberian Tiger is often seen in zoos.

A Siberian tiger, or more properly an Amur tiger, is an endangered species of tiger that is native to northern Russia. It is the largest and most powerful of the tiger species, and it is widely kept in captivity by zoos and circuses in the United States. Due to lax laws regarding ownership of exotic pets, private individuals are allowed to keep Siberian tigers in certain states. Some states do require a license for such pets.

States With No Restrictions

Alabama, Nevada, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and South Carolina do not in any way restrict ownership of large felines, including the Siberian Tiger.

States that Require a License

Arizona, Delaware, Indiana, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri (also requires registration of tigers with local police), Montana, North Dakota (also requires veterinary certificate), Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island (clear regulations for licensing require proof of adequate facilities and proper knowledge), South Dakota and Texas allow ownership of Siberian Tigers with proper state permits. These permits are available from state wildlife departments.

States With Specific Rules

In Michigan, it is legal to continue to own a Siberian tiger that was acquired before July 7, 2000, and in Minnesota the cutoff is January 1, 2005. A Siberian tiger acquired in Louisiana before August 15, 2006 may be kept so long as the owner obtains a permit, sterilizes the tiger and conforms with enclosure, feeding, care and insurance laws. In North Carolina, there is no state law but a county or city may ban the ownership of Siberian tigers. Ohio regulations call for an entry permit, veterinary inspection and health certificate for Siberian tigers brought in from outside the state but there is no regulation against keeping tigers in the state.

Florida and Nebraska Laws

In Florida, it is illegal to possess a Siberian tiger that has been acquired after August 1, 1980. In Nebraska, the cutoff is March 1, 1986. Since the lifespan of a Siberian tiger in captivity is about 15 years, there are no more legal Siberian tigers in private possession in either Florida or Nebraska as of this writing.

Saint Bernard owners who purchased their dog when it was a cute furry puppy might no longer know control the dog and it may end up in the Humane Society or worse. Starting a rescue, designed to offer these massive dogs a safe haven, full of love and care until a suitable forever home is available is a noble pursuit but there are some things to consider first.

Instructions

1. Inspect your facilities. The Saint Bernard needs more than a safe place to eat and rest. This dog needs an area where he can run and play. The Saint Bernard is notoriously a playful dog and quickly outgrows backyards. While even a small space is preferable to a home where the dog is neglected or abused, you will need to provide adequate exercise time if the dog cannot run.

2. Determine how you will operate your Saint Bernard rescue. You have a few options. You can operate as a private business, in which case, you need to comply with all local and states laws, including licensing, permits and zoning provisions. You may opt to piggyback on the shoulders of an existing non-profit organization and in doing so, operate under their jurisdiction and protection or you can become a non-profit entity in your own right. Contact a business accountant to further discuss your options.

3. Find out where the nearest Saint Bernard rescue is and contact the facility about your plans. If the facility handles more dogs than it can comfortably contain, employees will be glad to see you open your doors. However, if the facility has few Saints in its care, staffers may advise you that another rescue is unwarranted in your area.

4. Contact local law enforcement agencies, veterinarians and the Humane Society. You will need to demonstrate that you have adequate facilities to handle the Saint Bernard. If you operate under the umbrella of the Humane Society, the organization will provide you with strict guidelines to follow in caring for the Saint Bernard in your rescue.

5. Be prepared to raise money for your rescue. The adoption fees you charge will probably not cover the expenses of feeding and caring for your rescue dogs. Keep your rescue in the public eye by featuring a weekly column in your local newspaper, detailing one of your dogs or tips for proper dog care. Advertise the need for donors to drop off large bags of dog food, bedding or schedule volunteer days where the community can help erect kennels and visit the Saint Bernard dogs.

6. Contact Saint Bernard breeders in your state and offer to take in returned puppies or adult dogs that the owners could no longer keep. In many breeder contracts, the buyer must return a dog he no longer wants.

Ring-tailed lemurs are used to grooming in packs.

Ring-tailed lemurs are social groomers, meaning they typically groom one another in groups; grooming is also done simultaneously -- as one lemur grooms another, the other grooms it back. Ring-tailed lemurs are born with special teeth and claws that are used specifically for combing and scraping the fur to rid it of dirt and other particles. However, a ring-tailed lemur that is isolated from its social group will need help with its grooming process. Learn how lemurs perform their grooming so that you can base your technique on what the lemur is familiar with.

Instructions

1. Sit close to the lemur; close proximity is what ring-tailed lemurs are accustomed to during their grooming sessions, as it enables them to be able to groom one another simultaneously.

2. Look through the lemur's fur for evidence of insects or other particles. Pick out what you find using your fingers or long tweezers. Use a flashlight or spotlight if you have trouble seeing the fur and skin.

3. Use a comb to brush the lemur's fur. Ring-tailed lemurs are used to being groomed by teeth and claws; specifically, the grooming tools used by lemurs are known as the "tooth comb," which are six lower teeth, and the "toilet claw," which is an oversized nail on the toe. As such, a comb is a similar grooming tool to the lemur's tooth comb.

4. Set out a large dish of water for the ring-tailed lemur to bathe in. While lemurs are used to grooming one another while dry, the lemur may use the water to wet his fur anyway.

5. Keep the lemur's ears clean. Use wet cotton balls to wipe out any dirt. In the wild, ring-tailed lemurs will lick or pick at one another's ears to keep them clean, and wet cotton balls make an effective substitution for licking.

6. Do not worry about clipping the claws of your ring-tailed lemur. Ring-tailed lemurs only have one claw, the toilet claw, which they need to keep long.

Types

There are several types of nonprofit donations. In-kind donations include such items as computers or books or the gift of professional services, such as legal or accounting work. Charity Navigator, an organization devoted to evaluating the fund-raising practices of nonprofits, suggests that donors complete thorough research before deciding to donate to a particular nonprofit. Charity Navigator provides a description of all U.S. non-profits that have received a 501(c)(3), or tax-exempt, designation from the government. These charities are evaluated on ratio of program expenses to administrative and fund-raising expenses, the percentage of assets devoted to operating costs, organizational efficiency and the amount of assets and revenue.

Considerations

Nonprofit organizations should be able to produce a copy of their 501(c)(3) certificates, if asked, and should make their financial records available to donors. Ask to see Form 990, which is the organization's federal tax return, for the last several years. Carefully look at the amounts that the non-profit spent on fund-raising and administrative costs, including salaries. A well run organization will spend no more than 25 percent on administrative and fund-raising costs. If you itemize deductions on your tax return, you may be able to deduct charitable gifts. Gifts are deductible in the year in which they are made. You can also claim a deduction for in-kind donations of property or goods and may be able to claim the fair market value of the property.

Warning

Avoid organizations that claim to be fund-raising on behalf of another organization. In some cases, this is a scam and in others, the fund-raising company is taking a significant percent of the amount raised, giving relatively little to the charity. It is best to donate to a non-profit organization directly.

While pet sharks are not known to be deadly to their owners, they can bite and cause significant injury. It is also best to own only a single shark, as multiple sharks will fight with one another. However, they will generally not attack other fish.

Though they have the capacity to be fierce, sharks are far from invincible. They will require special care in order to survive and thrive as pets.

Prevention/Solution

A pet shark should be purchased when it is young and still adaptable, as older sharks will often be shocked by being moved. Sharks also have special requirements regarding aquariums. A pet shark will require a very large tank -- 50 gallons or more. Some sharks will require fresh water, while others will need a saltwater aquarium setup. The wrong type of water will result in the shark's death, so be sure you know what you're getting and maintain its environment. It is also important to maintain the cleanliness and temperature of the water, which should be between 75-80 degrees.

Prevention/Solution

Your shark's aquarium should be covered and accessorized with a thin bottom layer of gravel and some caves or other hiding places. All such items need to be kept clean, as will the aquarium itself.

1. Arrange separate areas in your house for your male and female dogs. Use pet gates, crates and doors to ensure that neither dog will escape from their area to mate with the other. Supervise each dog as much as possible during the female's heat cycle.

2. Pay equal attention to both the male and female dog as they can smell each other and become agitated and restless. Sit calmly with each dog, pet each one gently and talk to them in a soothing voice. Brush your dogs if they enjoy it and feed them special treats.

Subway trains serve as a form of mass transit and provide an alternative to private and public above-ground street transportation. Locomotion and the Third Rail

Subways get their power through an exposed electrical line known as the third rail, which runs alongside the two rails the train cars ride on. Subways do not use gas-fueled combustion engines because the exhaust in the enclosed subway tunnels and stations would cause carbon monoxide poisoning to riders. Since the third rail is an exposed power source it is extremely dangerous. Touching a third rail results in electrocution.

Misconceptions

Subways can also run above ground; many subway lines run on elevated tracks at some point on their routes. At this point they are commonly referred to as the El (for elevated) train. An example of this would be the number 6 subway line in New York City. In midtown Manhattan it is called the subway, but in Harlem and the Bronx it is the El, even though it is the same train in both places.

Conductors

Subway trains are driven by operators, or conductors, who sit in a booth at the front of the train and use a handheld device similar to a video game joystick to operate the train. There are no foot pedals on most modern subway trains, though some older model systems do have them. The acceleration and braking are done with the joystick and buttons on a control panel. The conductor is also the one who makes announcements over the public address system in the train and opens and closes the doors of the cars at stations.

Instructions

1. Determine the distance to the hole before teeing off. Select the club that offers the power to drive the ball the correct distance. Account for wind speed and direction before teeing off, as this will alter the direction and distance your ball travels.

2. Press the "B" button on your wand when ready, then swing the wand back to front in a motion similar to swinging a golf club. How hard you swing the wand will determine how much power you supply to the swing. Practicing this motion will ensure the ball travels the desired distance and direction consistently.

3. Pick a putter that adds more distance than required to reach the hole when putting on the green. Use the putting grid to determine the slope or incline of the green before swinging your club. The color of the grid indicates the terrain, with green being level, blue a decline and red an incline.

4. Line up your putt, taking into account the terrain of the green between your ball and the hole. Press the "B" button on the wand when ready and move the controller backward to forward in a swinging motion. Practicing this motion ensures your ball travels the correct distance when putting, as the angle of the back swing, the speed and the follow-through combine to determine the result of the putt.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier Health Problems

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are hardy dogs with few known health problems when acquired from a responsible, reputable breeder. Hip dysplasia, cataracts and luxating patellas are seen in the breed. The inherited eye condition PHPV (Persistent Hyperplastic Primary Vitroeus) is also a known health issue in Staffordshire Bull Terriers. A hereditary neurological condition, L-2 hydroxyglutaric Aciduria is also present in the Staffordshire Bull Terrier breed. Prospective owners should choose Staffordshire Bull Terriers bred to the American Kennel Club breed standard, which tend to be healthier than the "giant" Staffordshire Bull Terriers that have become popular in some areas.

Eye Problems

The two common eye problems in Staffordshire Bull Terriers are Hereditary Cataracts (HC) and Persistent Hyperplastic Primary Vitroeus (PHPV). HC is inherited through a recessive gene, meaning both parents must be carriers in order for a puppy to be affected. Genetic testing has given breeders the ability to eliminate the HC gene from their lines. PHPV, however, has a more complex pattern of inheritance. It is known to be present at birth and is not progressive. It can be detected with an eye exam at six weeks of age. Both HC and PHPV can be surgically corrected.

Joint Problems

Staffordshire Bull Terriers may suffer from hip dysplasia or luxating patellas. Both are hereditary conditions. Dogs suffering from either condition should not be used for breeding.

Luxating patellas occur when the ridges that hold the patella (like a human kneecap) in place are not prominent enough, allowing the patella to slide sideways. This is momentarily painful and may lock the dog's leg off the ground for several minutes until the quadricep muscle releases and allows the patella to slip back into place. Severe luxating patellas can be treated surgically, though dogs whose patellas only occasionally luxate may not need surgery.

Hip dysplasia involves the abnormal development of soft tissue in the hip causing subluxation, or separation of the bones of the hip. It is painful and can be completely debilitating. Some dogs with mild hip dysplasia can live normal lives without surgical correction. More severe cases require invasive surgical treatment, up to and including total hip replacement.

L-2 hydroxyglutaric Aciduria

L-2 hydroxyglutaric Aciduria is a neuro-metabolic disorder in which the substance L-2 builds up in the dog's plasma, urine and cerebrospinal fluid. This substance is usually metabolized, but when L-2 hydroxyglutaric Aciduria is present, it will instead remain in the body, with alarming results. Symptoms may include behavioral changes, seizures, tremors and muscle stiffness.

Brachycephalic Syndrome

Brachycephalic syndrome is present in all breeds with a shortened upper jaw giving a "squished" look to the dog's face, including Pugs, Bulldogs and Staffordshire Bull Terriers, among others. This is not a single disease or condition. Rather, it is a grouping of conditions and symptoms that are commonly seen in certain breeds. These conditions include elongated soft palate, stenotic nares and everted laryngeal saccules. A collapsing trachea may also be seen in dogs with brachycephalic syndrome. Symptoms include difficulty breathing and white, foamy vomit after eating. Surgery can correct brachycephalic syndrome in most cases.

Avoiding Health Problems

Owners considering purchasing or adopting a Staffordshire Bull Terrier can avoid acquiring a dog with these problems by choosing a dog produced by a reputable, responsible breeder. Before committing to a purchase or adoption, prospective owners should insist on a veterinary examination. Some problems common in the breed can only be diagnosed through X-rays and other more complex diagnostic procedures, but a simple eye exam can rule out cataracts and PHPV.

If purchasing a puppy from a breeder, look for parents whose hips and shoulders are OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) certified. The parents should also be free of the gene for hereditary cataracts. If a breeder is unwilling to show proof of either of these health clearances, choose a different breeder.

1. Draft your petition for adoption. You can obtain a blank copy of the petition form the county probate court's office of the clerk. According to Indiana Code Section 31-19-2-6, the petition must include full information about the child, the proposed new name for the child, an account of the child's possessions, and information on the child's current residence. The petition must be filed in triplicate. A medical report containing a report on the child's current health and medical history must be attached to the petition, or sent to the state registrar within 60 days of filing.

2. File the petition with the probate court, along with paying filing fees. There are substantial fees associated with the filing of an adoption petition that include $107 for the petition, $200 for the home study, and $70 toward the putative father registry pursuant to IC 31-19-2-8. (These fee amounts were as of 2011). Provide notice of the petition to the natural parents by special process server such as the county sheriff. The court will review the petition to determine whether the petition is complete and, upon approval, forward the petition to a licensed child placement agency for review and completion of a home study (a survey to make sure your home is adequate for the adoptive child).

3. Participate in a three-month placement of the child in your home. Once the placement period is over and the child adoption agency files a report with the court, participate in a hearing on your petition. If the court finds the adoption petition to be in the best interests of the child, it will grant the petition and forward a record of adoption to the Indiana Department of Health's Vital Statistics.
