Deciding to raise a tiger is a serious decision.

Tigers are one of the strongest and most dangerous of all the big cats. It's important to remember that tigers are wild animals and even those raised by breeders and professional handlers have been known to bite in play or mistakenly in defense. If you are thinking of acquiring one as a pet, be aware that not everyone is suited to owning a tiger. There are many costs, regulations and a lot of work that goes with owning one. If you happen to change your mind, it is likely that a zoo will not adopt the tiger due to breeding and health restrictions and the cat may have to be euthanized.

Instructions

1. Contact your state's wildlife agency to inquire about licensing requirements. You may also require a license to build the tiger's enclosure, so phone your city or county's government to inquire about local requirements. If the enclosure is approved by your state, you will need to contact the federal agency, the Animal and Plant Heath Inspection Service (APHIS). They will inspect the enclosure before deciding whether to approve your application. They will also require you to log vet visits and the details of the animal's diet and will inspect you yearly and on a surprise basis.

3. Build your enclosure to be as large as you possibly can. The enclosure should measure between 500 and 1,000 square feet. The enclosure should be built of strong materials (plywood at least) and the surrounding fencing must be at least eight feet high. Also include two gates, one which closes behind the other. Interior fencing must be at least six feet high by U.S. law. The inside housing (known as a "denbox") must have a sliding door that leads to a separate room so you can lock the cat in when needing to clean its cage. The sliding door must be over a hole used to bait the tiger; it must also be easy to lock once the tiger is inside.

4. Feed the cub with milk if it is less than six weeks old. However, cubs should not be separated from their mothers this early except when the mother has died. The cub must be fed milk six times a day. A damp piece of cotton wool must then be rubbed on the tiger's genitals to encourage defecation. After six weeks, the cub can be weaned and given minced meat. It can eat meat on its own at three months and must eat five percent of its body weight daily and be given extra calcium. They prefer horse meat, which can be bought from speciali companies.

5. Put plenty of toys in the enclosure. Tigers are lively, intelligent animals that require a lot of stimulation. They enjoy water and should be given a pool to play in. Trees can be played in, climbed on and used for scratching. New smells and objects should be provided on a regular basis.

As much as you take good care of your canine baby with regular checkups at the vet, vaccinations at the scheduled times and a healthy diet--unfortunately, as with all living beings--illness is inevitable. Luckily, in most cases, there are telltale signs to look for. The following are ways to tell if your dog may be ill and requires a visit to the vet.

1. Observe if the dog has diarrhea and/or is vomiting. 3. Monitor your dog's water consumption. Increased water intake may be associated with kidney disease or diabetes. Of course, the more heated up or active your dog is, the more water she will drink. That's why it's important to keep close tabs on her drinking habits.

4. See if the dog's nose is warm and dry. This might just mean he is dehydrated and needs more water, however, it can also be a sign of illness. The nose should be cold and wet, but not runny.

5. Check inside your dog's mouth. If the gums are red rather than pink, it's a sign of inflammation or gum disease. Bad breath and/or drooling might also be symptoms of gum disease or tooth decay. Halitosis could also indicate a metabolic disorder.

6. Observe the dog's activity level. If she remains lethargic or listless; it could be a sign of illness. Since more sleep and less activity may also be attributed to age, it's important to be aware of how much sleep is normal for your dog. Lethargy, weakness, loss of balance or limping for no apparent reason is a good indication there may be something wrong. Conversely, increased restlessness might also be a sign of a problem.

7. Monitor your dog's eating habits. Look for a decreased/increased appetite or weight loss. Be aware of what a normal weight is for your dog based on age, food intake and activity level. If he has a loss of appetite or increased appetite for more than a 24-hour period, there could be something wrong.

8. Be aware if your dog has difficulty breathing or prolonged panting. This may be associated with cancer, a respiratory problem, heart disorder, or possibly heat stroke. Coughing might be a sign of an irritation or something more serious, such as cancer.

Risks

The risks generally associated with microchips are cancer, allergies and injury due to the microchip's moving into tissues or organs. Although some evidence supports the presence of these risks, they are generally considered so small that the benefits outweigh the risks, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Cancer

One study linked microchips and cancerous tumors, but the evidence of that study has been called into question, according to vetinfo.com. The study was done on lab mice, which are more vulnerable and easily harmed than large animals. Preventing pets' separation from owners outweighs the risk, according to the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association.

Allergies

In rare cases, a pet could suffer an allergy to a microchip. However, microchips are encased in bio-compatible glass that generally does not irritate or harm the animal.

Tissues and organs

Some worry that microchips could move into other tissues and organs, causing blockage or injury. Teacup pigs are growing in popularity as household pets and as they begin to increase in popularity more people are beginning to breed them at home. Teacup pigs are said to be smaller than pot bellied pigs and breeders say that they make good pets. While they are very similar to breed to dogs, there is a slight learning curve. With a little bit of practice teacup pigs can be successfully bred in less than a year.

Instructions

1. Make sure you are allowed to own pigs in your area. Many municipalities will not allow livestock.

2. Find a reputable, registered breeder in your area. Search by state or city. You may have to order out of state to get some of the best bloodlines.

3. Visit the breeding facility if possible. Choose a gilt that is registered and in good health. This means well-muscled, a long neck, and good body lines. Ask to see the paperwork regarding its breeding history. Do not buy unregistered stock.

4. Use the same process in choosing a sire. If this is your first time breeding, it is easier to buy a female that is already pregnant, or ask the breeder to breed it for you before you take it home.

5. Have a gestation and farrowing area ready, made of sturdy materials, long and narrow and large enough to accommodate the sow and her upcoming litter. Adult teacup pigs are said to weigh between 35-60 pounds -- but they may grow as large as 120 pounds. They should have enough room to lie down and stretch out to sleep.

6. If you decide to get a boar and gilt, the female may be bred at six to eight months of age. Breed on the second or third heat, on the first day heat is observed. Breed again 12 to 24 hours later, if possible. Mark the day of the first breeding on your calendar.

7. Allow the boar in with the female once or twice a day. Mating takes about five to 10 minutes. If the female does not go into heat again in 21 days, she is most likely pregnant. If you choose artificial insemination, order catalogs from semen suppliers before you purchase your female and bring her home. Look under show pigs to find the best bloodlines.

8. Once the sow gives birth, regulate the temperature in the farrowing pen by using either fans or heat lamps, depending on the weather. Piglets are most comfortable at 85-90 degrees. At six to seven weeks old, the temperature can be brought down to 70 degrees. Provide fresh straw or other bedding material and remove manure regularly.

9. Limit contact between the piglets and people, and do not let them come in contact with other animals to prevent the spread of disease.

10. Notify a teacup pig registrar within 40 days of the birth. A registration form and fee is required for each piglet. All pigs placed in the breeding register will receive ear tags that link to their pedigrees. Boars sold as pets should be castrated by the breeder before sale. Wean piglets at four weeks of age. Give them a balanced pig feed, fresh fruits and vegetables.

The United States government has endeavored to make the adoption process one in which all participants experience a fair outcome, with the adopted child's needs placed first. Prospective adoptive parents are selected based on their compliance with Federal and State laws and on the results of a home study evaluation. Applicants for adoption are asked to provide birth, marriage and divorce documentation, proof of medical and life insurance coverage, a full financial disclosure, copies of motor vehicle records, driver's licenses and proof of mortgages held, along with copies of other personal records, if requested.

Background

Prior to the enactment of the Massachusetts Adoption of Children Act of 1851, adoptions were carried out informally without governmental oversight or background checks by agencies. Many times the needs of adopted children were secondary to the economic concerns of the families who adopted them. After 1851, the law required a judge's approval of an adoption before it could be granted. Gradually, the adoption process became more attentive to the moral character of people seeking to adopt children, as well as exercising greater scrutiny in assessing their abilities to provide for and educate those children.

Types

Public adoption agencies throughout the United States work independently and sometimes with agencies to provide permanent homes for children in the Child Welfare system and in foster care. Private licensed fee-based adoption agencies engage birth mothers, prospective adoptive parents and social workers in an effort to arrange successful adoptions or "matches." Independent or private adoptions are initiated by prospective adoptive parents, birth parents or by attorneys, and they are finalized by attorneys. General requirements for those seeking to adopt children state that the applicants must have no history of crimes involving children. Additionally, applicants are asked to disclose any personal history of abuse that took place during their own childhoods, and to indicate whether they were or are currently involved in any type of domestic violence. If the history includes abuse or domestic violence, the applicant must be able to prove that the issues have been addressed and resolved with professional therapy.

Special Considerations

If prospective parents are attempting to adopt a newborn, birth parents are likely to play a major role in selecting adoptive parents for their babies. With infant and toddler adoptions, the criteria for adopting will be more restrictive than it would be if their adoption preference were older or special needs children. Some agencies or birth parents prefer to place their babies only with married couples who have been married for a certain length of time. Others require adoptive parents to be of a particular faith or to fall within a certain age bracket. Some agencies or birth parents might prefer and assign higher priority to prospective mothers who are infertile or who have undergone more than one miscarriage.

Catching a feral -- or stray -- cat that only comes out at night must be handled with caution. Once a feral cat is captured take it to a veterinarian for a proper examination.

1. Observe the cat. Look to see if it has tags. Examine the fur. A cat with disheveled fur is indicative of an animal roaming the wild. Watch its behavior. 2. Feed the cat at the same time, every night. Set out food in the spot where you intend to catch the feral cat. Continue this process for a few days to acquaint the cat to a regular dining time. Set up the feeding area near a bedroom or living room window. Do your best to feed the cat as early as possible at night, so you can tend to it as soon as it is caught. Avoid feeding the cat the night before you trap it to keep it as hungry as possible.

3. Soak a sheet of newspaper in mackerel juice. Fold the paper into a square and place it on the ground. Assemble a wire-mesh cat trap. Position the rear of the trap on top the newspaper.

4. Layer the bottom of the trap with clean newspaper. Bait the rear of the trap with cat food or shredded chicken. Position the bait in accordance with the trap plate, which engages the trap door.

5. Stay close to the window. Remain out of sight, but close enough so that when you hear the trap engage you can tend to it.

6. Cover the closed trap with a blanket. Keep the blanket over the trap until you can transport the cat to a veterinarian for a proper check up.

Why the Attraction?

Brine shrimp are naturally drawn to light, meaning exposure to it generally elicits a reaction from them. This is largely because light encourages green algae growth in their tanks. Green algae's presence provides both oxygen and food for the sea monkeys, thus making both the algae and the light that helps to grow it vital for the sea monkeys.

How Do They React?

Exactly how brine shrimp react to light depends on how much light they are exposed to and under what circumstances they are exposed to it.

Placing them into a dark room and then shining a focused beam of light into one part of their tank will draw them toward the light. Moving the light around the tank will cause them to follow it, giving people one of the few ways to feel like they are genuinely interacting with their sea monkeys.

Placing the tank in a well-lit window or otherwise exposing the whole tank to light all at once will naturally have a wider, less-focused effect. Racing

Each year around $2 billion is wagered on greyhound racing in the U.S., the Greyhound Racing Association of America reports. As of 2011, there are 40 greyhound racing tracks operating in 12 states. A greyhound racing program usually consists of 15 races. During a race greyhounds can reach speeds of around 45 miles per hour, covering a distance of 5/16 of a mile in around 31 seconds.
