Care For A Labradoodle

Positively reinforce your labradoodle's good behavior.

Labradoodles are a cross-breed between standard poodles and labrador retrievers. The labradoodle came into being as the result of a search for non-allergen dogs that were good guard dogs as well. Labradoodles make great pets. They do not shed and are often considered fun-loving and energetic as well.

Instructions

1. Take your labradoodle in for a regular checkup at your veterinarian's office. Speak to your vet about spaying or neutering your pet and about preventative measures such as heartworm, flea and tick medication.

2. Train your labradoodle as soon as it becomes a part of your family. House train your dog by taking it outside to relieve itself regularly and rewarding it for doing so. Scold it if you catch it urinating in the house and take it outside immediately. Also, crate-training may be beneficial. Teach your labradoodle to love its crate by placing familiar objects in it. Position the crate in a well-traveled area of your home and leave your pet periodically in the crate even when you are home.

3. Teach your labradoodle to behave indoors and out by offering treats when it obeys a command and by interrupting it when it is misbehaving. To interrupt your pet, clap loudly, stomp a foot or say "no" sternly. Be consistent. If you choose to teach your dog to respond to "no," then continue to use that word when teaching it. Pet your dog often and speak reassuringly to it whenever you can to show it the proper affection.

4. Teach you labradoodle to stay off of furniture by firmly telling it "no" when it climbs on. If your labradoodle chews furniture or other objects, also tell it "no." Consider purchasing a no-chew spray.

5. Provide your labradoodle with ample water that it can reach at any time of the day. Research the types of food available and consult with your vet concerning what types of food will be best for your labradoodle. If your pet is a picky eater, consider supplements to provide it with a balanced diet.

6. Shampoo and brush your labradoodle's coat regularly. Trim its nails and clean its ears and eyes often, too. Have your dog trimmed at least twice every year. Brush your labradoodle's teeth, using pet toothbrush and toothpaste, at least once a week.

7. Exercise your labradoodle at least once a day. Take it for a walk or run or for a trip to the park to play fetch or to swim. Dog parks and other public areas give your labradoodle a chance to socialize with other people and animals and will help it to adjust normally.

Make Petsitting Flyers

Whether you're just starting out in the pet-sitting business or you're a seasoned professional, a pet-sitting flyer can help attract new clients. Create an eye-catching flyer by adding at least one image, using color, bullet points and varying font sizes. Use concise and informative language to entice customers to call or visit your website for their pet-sitting needs.

Instructions

1. Jot down details about your business that you want to include in your flyer, such as price, business hours, contact information and any restrictions you may have. For example, you may only care for pets up to a certain size or with a calm demeanor. This list will help ensure that your brochure is accurate and complete.

2. Use a computer word processing program, such as Microsoft Word. With this program, you can type your flyer and then change the font size to larger (such as 20-point type) for headers and smaller (such as 12-point type) for the rest of the text. You can make important parts of the text bold or italic for emphasis. You may also change the color and font type to suit your taste. Center headers horizontally on the page, and make the rest of the text flush left.

3. Type the name of your company and add "Pet Sitting" or "Pet-Sitting Services" if it isn't already included in your business name.

4. Type your business's phone number and address, if applicable. If you are working out of your home and do not want customers stopping by unannounced, only list the phone number. Add your website address if you have one.

5. Add an image to your flyer. Search free online image galleries, such as stock.xchng (www.sxc.hu/home), for a suitable image. Save the image to your computer's hard drive. In your Word document, navigate to "Insert," click "Picture," and find the image you just saved.

6. Introduce yourself. Greet the reader with "Hello, friend" or "Dear Neighbor." Give your full name and a little background about yourself, including your experience with pet-sitting. Tell potential clients why they should trust their pets with you.

7. Discuss the details of your service. Include the information from the list you've written. Your introduction and details sections should not exceed 100 words.

8. List the types of pets you are willing to sit for. For example, your list may include dogs, cats, birds, ferrets and lizards.

9. Proofread the text before you print, to look for spelling or grammatical errors. Print one copy and ask a friend or relative to proofread it. Make any necessary changes and proofread once more before you print out copies to be distributed.

Treat Canine Diabetes

Canine diabetes affects dogs in much the same way as humans. A chronic disease in which the body can't break down and utilize glucose, diabetes occurs either because the body lacks insulin, or the body's insulin isn't working properly. If untreated, canine diabetes leads to such serious health risks as kidney damage, heart disease, blindness and death. Treat the disease as soon as it's diagnosed to lessen such risks.

Instructions

1. Inject insulin into your dog to regulate his blood sugar levels, as prescribed by his vet. Some need two injections a day based on the severity of their disease. Your vet provides proper insulin syringes and instructions on administer the injection.

2. Administer glucose strip testing for urine. Until you regulate her illness, you must obtain your dog's urine sample, then dip the test strip into the sample. Compare the strip's color to the bottle's chart to determine the amount of glucose that's spilling into her urine.

3. Feed your dog a strict diet, including high fiber to help stabilize her blood sugar levels. Stick with the diet; it works.

4. Allow your vet to take blood glucose measurements if necessary to stabilize your dog. Blood measurements are more specific than urine testing.

5. Consider giving your dog natural dietary supplements to help manage the disease. Some beneficial supplements include astragalus, bilberry extract and fenugreek help lower blood sugar levels and increase insulin production. Ask your vet before giving them to your dog.

The Best Dogs For Apartments

The Best Dogs for Apartments

If you are living in the confines of an apartment it really is not fair to expect a dog the size of a St. Bernard or a breed that craves the outdoors like a Border Collie to share your space with you. Certain breeds work much better within an apartment setting than others. The ideal breeds for apartment living are those that require little daily exercise, do not bark or make a lot of noise, can stand being by themselves and don't make big messes for you to clean up when you return home.

Bichon Frise

The Bichon Frise is a perfect breed for those who live in apartments. The animal was actually bred for the purpose of being a companion for its owners. This dog will require very little exercise and even in a modestly sized unit you can usually meet that requirement through aggressive play. It loves to sit next to you and gets along well with kids and other pets. The only downside to the Bichon Frise is that it needs to be closely groomed because of its thick coat.

Boston Terrier

The Boston Terrier is a good dog for apartment dwellers, especially those with larger units because it can reach up to 25 lbs. This breed not only doesn't need to be exercised often, but really shouldn't because it is prone to heatstroke. They usually get the exercise they need in a short burst of activity that ends with their jumping up on the furniture next to you to take a long nap.

Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier is also built for apartment living. These little guys don't make it much past 5 lbs. and smaller ones can weigh as little as 3 lbs. when fully grown. Although they are prone to barking which might cause problems with your neighbors, this facet of their personalities also makes them fantastic watchdogs, so if a neighbor complains let them know that your dog has the capacity to scare off unwanted intruders.

Pomeranian

The Pomeranian is also prone to barking, but can be trained to suppress that part of its personality if you are afraid of irritating the people next door. This dog gets along well with other dogs and even can make friends with cats. They require only a moderate amount of exercise. The worst thing about keeping a Pomeranian is that come shedding time you will find excessive amounts of fur around the apartment. Other than that, however, this breed is a great choice for apartment dwellers.

Run A Nonprofit Animal Rescue From Home

Do a home check before you place rescued animals with new owners.

The tragedy of pet overpopulation is evidenced by the sheer number of unwanted and homeless animals crowded into shelters across the country. This is especially true during tough economic times, when owners face foreclosure and job loss. Dogs and cats who do not get adopted from the shelter may face the sad reality of euthanasia. Fortunately, there are many animal rescue organizations that pull these animals from the shelter and provide a safe foster home until a forever home can be found. Running a nonprofit rescue from your home can be an extremely rewarding venture, but it involves planning, preparation and monetary considerations.

Instructions

1. Align yourself with others who share your dedication to animals. Find allies and teammates with a wide range of talents and skills to help you achieve your goals. One person may have the qualities to deal with the emotional, hands-on details of animal rescue, while another may be more skilled in administrative functions. Both are important in starting a rescue organization.

2. Do your research. Visit your library to learn as much as you can about nonprofit management as well as animal care. Become informed about pet overpopulation and what other groups are doing to help. Attend conferences and read publications by animal welfare professionals. Visit animal shelters to get a firsthand account of the animals' needs and space requirements.

3. Name your rescue group and write your mission statement. This statement should be brief, clear and results-oriented. It should touch hearts and motivate others to help.

4. Check your local zoning ordinances to determine if you can keep animals kenneled at your home, and if so, how many. Unless you live in a very rural area or an area that is zoned for operating a kennel, you will have to lease a separate property. You can still operate from a home office at your residence.

5. Legalize your organization. Create your board of directors. Consider veterinarians, PR associates and other business people whose skills and talents complement your mission. File for 501(c) (3) nonprofit status with the IRS so that donations are tax-deductible. Register your organization's name and file the appropriate paperwork with your secretary of state.

6. Work with an accountant to create a budget. The IRS requires that you document your work through your budget. Your donors will also want to see your operating budget before they fund your organization. Once you see what kind of money you require to operate, establish fundraising efforts.

7. Maintain a list of foster families that can take rescued animals into their homes during the week. Establish weekend adoption events to showcase the animals that need a permanent home. Screen potential owners well and charge a fee for placement. This fee will help you rescue and place more animals.

Marmoset Monkey Information

The common marmoset lives in tropical rainforests

Marmoset monkeys, from the Callitrichid family of primates, are mainly found in tropical rainforests of Central and South America. The common marmoset is tree dwelling and lives in a home range of between 5,000 and 65,000 square meters. They require trees that provide gums and saps for food, as well as hiding places to escape predators, such as snakes and raptors.

Description

An adult common marmoset is 7 to 12 inches tall, with a 7 to 16 inch tail, and weighs between 10 and 18 ounces, according to Primate Care. It has black fur on its head and neck, with white tufts on its ears. The face is black and flattened. The fur on its body is black and white and it has black rings on its white tail.

Diet

According to the University of Wisconsin, the common marmoset eats sap and gum from trees, fruits and small animals. It chews holes in the bark of trees to access the sap. In addition to sweet fruits, nectar and flowers, it also feeds on spiders, lizards, snails, grasshoppers, crickets, cockroaches and cicadas.

Socialization/Reproduction

Marmosets reach maturity at about 18 months of age and usually reproduce for the first time between 17 and 20 months. They usually give birth to two babies every six months. The gestation period is between 140 and 146 days and labor only takes about an hour. All family members will carry the infant monkeys, returning them to their mothers for nursing. The University of Wisconsin indicates that they usually live in groups of 8 to 10, and sometimes have as many as 15 members. There is usually only one breeding pair in a group.

Types

Along with the common marmoset, there are several other types, such as Geoffroy's marmoset, pygmy marmoset and silvery marmoset. Primary differences between the types are size and colors. The pygmy marmoset is the smallest monkey in the world at 4.7 to 5.8 inches tall with a 6.6 to 9 inch tail, weighing only 3.5 to 4.5 ounces. The lifespan of the marmoset ranges from 7 to 16 years, according to Primate Care.

Conservation

The University of Wisconsin indicates that the common marmoset, unlike some of its relatives, is not considered an endangered species, as of 2010. However, in some areas the populations are beginning to diminish because of the destruction of their habitat. Marmosets listed as endangered include Buffy tuft-eared marmoset, Buffy-head marmoset and black-headed marmoset. Geoffroy's marmoset is considered vulnerable.

Create A Standard Operating Procedure

A procedural manual puts the company policies in black and white.

You can create a standard operating procedure to set a uniform code of response to any foreseen situation. Standard operating procedure, or SOP, is a term used to describe a series of actions sanctioned by an authoritative body. Manuals of standard operating procedures increase policy compliance by providing training materials and an on-site reference guide. Research each situation fully to create a standard operating procedure that reduces overall risk while increasing customer loyalty and employee satisfaction.

Instructions

1. Write down the situation for which you are creating a standard operating procedure response. Include specific details and any variations on the situation you intend to cover in the SOP.

2. Interview company authorities about how they want this specific situation to be handled at each level of the operation. Take detailed notes and ask questions about any areas of the standard operating procedures as they are described to you. Insert personal thoughts and opinions into the conversation on the matter according to your personal level of comfort with the authority figure in question.

3. Create a multi-faceted standard operating procedure based on the interview with management. Include specific information on reporting responsibilities and chain of command in this basic procedural report. Draft an easily understandable flowchart that spells out the purposed plan of action.

4. Discuss the proposed standard operating procedure with some or all of the people it will effect to solicit their insight on the matter. Take notes so they know you are listening and be sure to record any ideas you feel may improve the policy.

5. Type and print out a rough draft of the step-by-step standard operating procedure that reflects everything you have learned from the research. Present the guide to the establishment for approval with the explanation that it is a rough draft and you would appreciate help with revisions.

6. Collect the revised versions of the SOP. Review remarks and make the appropriate changes to the standard operating procedure so the next draft will be acceptable.

7. Run the final draft of the standard operating procedure by the management before printing copies for those governed by the policy. Send an e-mail regarding the new SOP and ask that it is read.

Meet Men When You Are A Single Mom

Meet Men When You Are a Single Mom

The life of a single mom sure can be busy. Between your career and children and housework, you're often left with little time to yourself, much less time to go on dates. On top of this, it can seem challenging to find a man who adores your kids just as much as he adores you.

Meeting men when you're a single mom may seem a bit daunting at first, but it's certainly not an impossible task. From online dating to joining a local hiking group, there are plenty of avenues for meeting eligible bachelors in your area.

Instructions

1. Try online dating. With millions of Americans turning to the Internet for love, you might just find your Mr. Right online. Internet dating works well for single moms since it saves you time by screening out the bad apples. Plus, you can email and call any potential dates before you meet them in person. Popular dating sites include eHarmony and Match.com. You can also join a site that caters specifically to one-parent families, like Meet Single Parents.

2. Join a community social group. Become a member of a hiking group, ballroom dance team, movie club, or whatever else tickles your fancy. Finding a new hobby gives you the opportunity to have fun and to meet new men in your area. Sites like Meetup.com and SocialGrid.com offer listings of community groups all over the country. You can also check the bulletin boards at your community center and library to see what events are happening in your area.

3. Head back to school. Whether you're finishing a degree or taking a couple classes for fun, your local college can be a good way to meet single men. If your schedule allows, sign up for an evening class since these courses attract older students who are trying to juggle a career and education (like many single moms out there). Also, consider joining a college-sponsored club or organization to meet guys outside of your classes.

4. Go to church. If you belong to a religious organization, going to church is a great way to meet men who share your moral and religious beliefs. Get involved with your congregation by joining a committee or church group, which will help you meet the eligible bachelors in your spiritual community. Many churches host events for their single members too so try to attend a few of these. If your congregation doesn't provide these events, ask your church leader if you can put one together.

5. Hire a matchmaker. A matchmaker saves you time by weeding out the men who don't suit your preferences. Also, a matchmaker can specifically set you up with single fathers or with guys who don't mind dating a woman with children. In short, matchmaking can be a helpful resource for busy single moms who don't have the time to scour for dates.

Ways To Help Animal Shelters From Home

Shelters provide homes for cats and dogs.

Animal shelters across the country help find homes for lost and abandoned pets. These organizations need funds, supplies, and volunteer labor to help as many animals as possible. If you are too busy to volunteer at the shelter itself, there are plenty of ways to help shelters right from the comfort of your own home.

Donate Money

Shelters, like any organization, need funds to keep running. Many shelters accept donations online or through the mail, so donating money to a shelter can be done quickly from home. Call the shelter to ask them for the easiest method to donate money from home.

Make a Blanket

If you're good at sewing or knitting, animal shelters across the country always need cozy blankets for their furry guests. The Snuggles Project encourages people to knit, crochet, or sew blankets in various sizes--14" x 14", 24" x 24" and 36" x 36"--and donate them to participating shelters. You can knit or crochet a blanket while sitting in front of the TV, and using a thick yarn with large needles makes the task go quickly. When you finish, just mail the package.

Volunteer Professional Services

You can volunteer professional services that don't require you to leave your home but still help an animal shelter. If you're a web designer or freelance writer, you can design or write copy for the animal shelter's website, for example. Offer your marketing, legal, or other professional advice to help out the shelter right from your home phone.

Take Care of Your Own Pet

Being a responsible pet owner is one of the easiest ways to help animal shelters from home. Shelters are overpopulated with animals whose owners neglected, abandoned, or lost them. By properly supervising and caring for your own pet, you help keep one more animal from crowding your local shelter.

Help The Homeless

Homelessness is a very real and misunderstood situation that affects over one million Americans. Some view homelessness as a natural consequence of laziness or a lack of motivation. However, homelessness often stems from job loss, mental illness, domestic violence or teenagers running away from home. Fortunately, there are ways to help.

Instructions

1. Donate items for the homeless. Set aside used clothing and toys next time you clean out the closet. Other donations, such as food and cash, can also be taken to a homeless shelter.

2. Work at a shelter. You can help feed the homeless year-round. Even people with very busy schedules can volunteer whenever it's possible.

3. Volunteer your time with other organizations that offer aid to the homeless. Check with your local Salvation Army to find ways you can help. The little bit of kindness you give, will be remembered for a long time.

4. Use your talents to help others. Lawyers can provide free legal help. Medical and dental services can be offered to the homeless at no cost by doctors and dentists. If you are a teacher, you can offer tutoring.

5. Educate others. Whether you're letting others know about a shelter, what they can do to help, or responding when an uninformed person makes an incorrect and insensitive comment, your knowledge can go a long way in convincing others to help.

Adult Adoption Laws

Adult Adoption Laws

Adoption of a person over the age of 18 is relatively rare these days, but it is legal in every state. Each state has slightly different laws and restrictions. Usually consent of both parties is essential, unless the adult being adopted has diminished capacity. Adult adoptions allow official recognition of a parent-child relationship that already exists, such as a stepparent legally adopting a stepchild, or adoption for purposes of inheritance.

History

Adult adoption was more common in the past than it is today. It served the function of allowing a childless ruler to cement a dynasty. A family with no heir might adopt an adult to keep the family name alive or allow a family business to continue. Other historically common reasons for adults adopting adults included ensuring that a parent is cared for or to direct how property would be inherited.

Benefits

Nowadays adults may adopt adults to establish a legal parent-child relationship, to make it easier for property to be inherited or to legalize a stepparent or foster parent-child relationship. When the adult being adopted needs perpetual care, a formal adoption enables access to family insurance, family membership or inheritance to ensure lifetime care.

When States Frown on Adult Adoption

In recent history same-sex couples, who were unable to legally marry or form civil partnerships, have tried to adopt one another in order to form a legal relationship. This was done for purposes of inheriting property and establishing other family rights. This strategy has been thwarted in some states because the parent-child relationship is built into the laws governing adoption. Even in cases of adults who are mentally and physically incapacitated, some state laws discourage adult adoption and direct caregivers to establish a conservatorship for perpetual care.

Restrictions

Each state has different adult adoption laws. A new birth certificate will be issued, and the surname of the adopted person may be changed. Usually in adult adoptions, the relationship with biological parents will be severed and a new parent-child relationship created just as it is when a child is adopted.

Sealed records

In most states the records for adult adoptions are sealed just as they are in child adoptions, even though there is no secrecy as to the identity of the parties involved. Adoption experts recommend keeping copies of all documents related to the adoption in a safe place. This serves as a safeguard against the difficulties encountered in getting replacement copies once the records are sealed.

Start A Pit Bull Rescue In Florida

The original Gotty sire

Opening a Pit Bull rescue center in Florida requires careful planning, research and a lot of hard work. Many Florida municipalities have Breed Specific Legislation pending or enacted. Miami-Dade county, for example, has completely outlawed Bully breed dogs within the county. Because of BSL, you should contact local legislators to ensure that the area you have chosen for your rescue isn't affected by any of these laws.

Instructions

1. Build housing for the dogs. In Florida, you have to provide each dog with a separate covered shelter to protect them from rain and give them shade. Additionally, each dog has to have a separate labeled food and water dish. Because of this, building individual pens or kennels is the best option. You will also have to get at least $1,000,000 worth of liability insurance regardless of the number of dogs you plan to house.

2. Call the Florida Department of Health at (850) 245-4444 to inspect your property. You need a permit from them before you can house any dogs. They will inspect the property every six months, so you have to keep the property in good shape as these inspections are surprise inspections.

3. Plan for hurricanes. You need to have an evacuation plan in place for the dogs in case a hurricane warning is issued for your area. This is required by Florida state law. Consider contacting rescues or kennels in other states to get commitments from them to care for a certain number of dogs during a natural disaster.

4. Find veterinarians in your area to care for the dogs. Some of the rescue dogs will be in bad shape due to neglect, abuse and/or dog fighting. These dogs will need immediate care. If you live near a university that has a veterinarian program, contact them as they will usually provide free care for rescue centers.

5. Accept donations of time, money and supplies. You will make some money from adoption fees but you will need people to help you care for the dogs and you will need collars, food, dishes and other supplies for the dogs. If you are a non-profit rescue, you can contact the municipal court in your area to find out if people can serve their court-ordered community service at your rescue.

6. Take in dogs, have them spayed or neutered, test their temperament and adopt them to responsible pet owners. Florida law stipulates that all dogs adopted from rescues or shelters must be neutered.

Shih Tzu Breathing Problems

Shih Tzu Breathing Problems

The Shih Tzu is a popular breed of small dog in the United States. The dogs have lively personalities and desirable short muzzles. Their appearance, while adorable, can lead to breathing-related health problems.

Features

Signs of breathing difficulty are snoring, wheezing or breathing heavily through its mouth (especially after exercise).

Causes

Breeds such as Shih Tzus are known as being brachycephalic. This is a description for dogs with flat, pushed-in faces. Brachycephalic dogs can suffer from an elongated soft palate. This causes a partial obstruction in the dog's airway, resulting in snoring and difficulty breathing that worsen as the dog ages.

Treatment

If a dog's condition worsens, the soft palate can be surgically trimmed.

Prevention

To keep breathing difficulty to a minimum, Shih Tzus should be kept in moderate temperatures, not allowed to overexert themselves when exercising, and kept at a healthy weight.

Considerations

Before purchasing a Shih Tzu, research and understand the possible complications they may have. With every breed, always look for reputable breeders. A good breeder's dogs are less likely to have many health issues.

What Degree Is Needed To Be An Animal Rescuer

Animal rescuers assist animals in danger in a variety of ways.

Animal rescuers travel all around the world to help endangered wildlife. Endangerment is caused by both nature and humans. While a degree is not required to become an animal rescuer, there are classes and certifications offered that will teach you safely help animals at risk. Training is necessary so that you learn assist animals whilst not causing harm to yourself, especially when working with animals in the wild.

Certification

The federal government operates the Emergency Management Institute, which offers an array of courses on emergency situations. There are two courses offered on animal rescue. The American Humane Association also offers training for rescue responders. In addition to taking courses specific to animal rescue, you must take disaster or emergency response courses that are more general. This is to ensure that you are knowledgeable of the many hazards and unique requirements of rescue situations.

Experience

Once receiving training, you must gain experience by assisting with rescue operations. Whenever there is a natural disaster, emergency workers and volunteers assist with stabilizing the region in the aftermath. This is done through many different organizations, such as the American Red Cross. For animal rescue, you can volunteer through international organizations such as the United Animal Nations or local such as Animal Rescue New Orleans. The organizations will provide guidance, organization and supplies to assist with rescue operations.

Possible Degrees

While a degree is not required to be an animal rescuer, many professionals in the field hold degrees if they are educating the public about animal rescue. Many of the animals in distress across the globe are so because of human actions. A goal of animal rescue is to be preemptive and prevent bad things happening to animals. There is no standard degree to advocate and educate the public on the plight of wildlife, but according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a degree in education is helpful. Other degrees you may pursue would be zoologist, biologist or photojournalism. All these professionals assist with animal rescue in a variety of ways.

Continuing Education

Once you have certification in animal rescue and general rescue procedures, you will have to complete continuing education courses periodically. How often these courses must be completed will depend on which agency you obtain the certification from. The goal of these courses is to keep you abreast of new information in the field.

Donate To An Animal Shelter

Local animal shelters are grateful for donations. These facilities often operate on limited budgets and are funded by ever-disappearing grants and federal funds. Donating to an animal shelter can not only help the critters that call the shelter home, but it can also help clean out your home make you feel good. Although checks and cash donations are always welcome, these supplies are also in high demand.

Instructions

Instructions

1. Clean out your garage, basement and other storage areas. While sorting through what you want to save or throw away, make a pile of items to donate to an animal shelter. Save small animal cages, bird cages and aquariums. Many shelters receive more than just cats and dogs. These extra enclosures will ensure their "other guests" have a secure home for their temporary stay.

2. Collect old towels, buckets, brooms, mops, laundry baskets and other reusable cleaning supplies. Shelters have daily cleaning routines, and a donation of reusable supplies are appreciated.

3. Buy an extra bottle of cleaner when you do your grocery shopping. Bottles of bleach, disinfectants and natural cleansers, such as Simple Green, are used in shelters to sanitize the pets' environments. Scrub brushes and sponges are also often in short supply.

4. Chew toys, bones, squeaky toys, balls, and other pet toys and chews make great donations. They provide entertainment and much-needed teething relief for puppies, and they help break up the boredom of daily life for shelter animals. Buy an extra bag of dog or cat food when shopping for your own pet supplies. Consider grabbing a bag of chew bones or other treats as well.

5. Take the items to your local animal shelter. They generally accept donations any time of year. It's a good idea to call beforehand and ask if they have a wish list.

Information On A Bengal Cat

Bengal cats are typically very social.

The Bengal cat breed that is registered today with The International Cat Association, or TICA, had its start in 1963 when a domesticated cat was bred with an Asian leopard cat. For the next 20 years, the offspring of that litter were bred to create a hybrid cat that led to the first Bengal cat litter that was born in the 1980s.

Features

The Bengal cat has a very dramatic appearance with a short coat that offers clear and distinct rosettes and spots similar to that of a leopard or jaguar. Some Bengal cats may have more of a marbled pattern, though the spots will still be quite prominent throughout the body as well. Bengal cats are larger than most domesticated cats, with some of the male cats weighing more than 15 pounds.

Socialization

Bengal cats are typically very social, always wanting to be with their owners and family. They are usually very good with other pets, provided they are introduced to those pets early in their life.

Personality

The Bengal cat breed is considered to be very affectionate, enjoying the companionship of their owners and family. They are active cats that enjoy being on the go and can be quite rambunctious when in full "play" mode.

Considerations

Bengal cats love to climb and explore their environment, often spending hours jumping from perch to perch and never touching the floor. To keep your Bengal and your belongings safe, you will need to "Bengal" proof your home to ensure nothing gets broken while they are climbing, playing, and exploring.

Fun Fact

Unlike most domesticated cats, many Bengal cats love water and enjoy splashing through puddles or even joining you in the bathtub or shower.

Warning

If you don't like a house cat to jump frequently from the floor, then a Bengal is probably not the right cat for you.

How Many Vaccinations Does My Puppy Need Before Going Outside

How Many Vaccinations Does My Puppy Need Before Going Outside?

Dogs are susceptible to many serious diseases. However, many of these diseases are preventable through vaccinations/ There are five main vaccinations that puppies need before going outside or being exposed to other dogs.

Vaccinations

The five vaccinations are bordetella, parainfluenza, rabies, parvovirus and distemper. Rabies, distemper and parvovirus are considered "core" vaccines, meaning all dogs should get them. Bordetella and parainfluenza are considered "noncore," and veterinarians recommend them only for dogs spend a lot of time in kennels or at dog shows.

Timeline

Your puppy can receive the parvovirus, distemper, parainfluenza and bordetella vaccines at 6 to 8 weeks pld. There is also a combination vaccine referred to as DA2PP or DHLPP, which is a five-way vaccination and includes all except the rabies vaccination. These vaccinations should be repeated between 9 and 12 weeks and again between 13 and 16 weeks.

Puppies can get the rabies vaccine anywhere between 10 and 14 weeks old.

Frequency

Parvovirus, distemper and parainfluenza vaccinations are good for one year, and then should be repeated.

Exceptions

Rabies vaccinations vary depending upon the veterinarian; there are rabies vaccinations that are good for one year up to three years. However, some states have laws requiring annual rabies vaccinations.

Special Considerations

Some veterinarians recommend bordetella vaccines once every six months.

Care For Cats After Declawing

With proper car, cats can recover well from declawing surgery.

Many people choose to declaw their cats to protect themselves or their furniture. Declawing is a surgical procedure done by a veterinarian using general anesthesia and is often done at the same time as spaying or neutering. Usually only the front paws are declawed. As with any surgical procedure there is post-operative pain and special care needed for a proper recovery. Your veterinarian can help you decide if this surgery is right for you and your cat. With proper care your cat should have no ill effects from being declawed.

Instructions

1. Talk to your veterinarian when you pick up your cat after surgery. Ask if stitches or surgical adhesives were used on the paws. Listen carefully to all instructions for pain medications and post operative care. Ask for shredded newspaper to use for litter.

2. Take your cat home.

3. Make sure your cat has a quiet place to recover for the first day. Make sure food, water, and litter box with shredded newspaper are nearby.

4. Check paws two to three times a day for signs of swelling, redness, bleeding or any discharge. These are signs of infection. Call your veterinarian immediately if such signs are present.

5. Make sure your cat is eating and drinking. Make sure it is urinating and passing bowel movements. If your cat doesn't want to use the shredded newspaper litter, ask your veterinarian to recommend something else.

6. Keep your cat from getting up on things and jumping off as much as possible for at least a week to ten days. Don't encourage your cat to run and play for a few weeks.

7. Watch for excessive licking of the paws. Some licking is normal. Too much can slow healing and lead to infections. If your cat licks excessively, your vet can provide you with an Elizabethan collar to keep the cat from reaching its front paws.

8. Don't wash the paws or bathe your cat until the paws are completely healed.

9. Expect it to take a few weeks before your cat walks normally. All surgery needs recovery time. Younger cats will recover more quickly.

Autoimmune Disorders In A Greyhound Dog

Autoimmune disorders are common in greyhounds.

Greyhounds are genetically predisposed to developing autoimmune disorders, which are conditions that can cause the dog's immune system to attack vital organs of his body. These conditions can be life-threatening if they are left untreated. Autoimmune diseases are incurable, but a veterinarian can prescribe medications that will help to manage the symptoms.

Pannus (Chronic Superficial Keratitis)

Greyhounds are susceptible to pannus, which is a progressive autoimmune disease of the eye. According to the Animal Eye Clinic website, the symptoms of pannus are brown pigmentation (coloring) and redness in the whites of the dog's eye. Connective tissue grows into the dog's cornea and causes blindness as the disease progresses. The symptoms of pannus can be controlled by using a lifetime regimen of cyclosporin eye drops or steroid medications.

Acquired Myasthenia Gravis

The Mar Vista Animal Medical Center website describes acquired myasthenia gravis as an autoimmune disorder that causes the body to destroy the connections between nerves and muscles. Some of the symptoms of acquired myasthenia gravis are muscle weakness in the eyes, face and body. The dog will quickly tire when exercising and may have difficulty swallowing. In many cases the disorder will resolve itself without treatment, but in other cases, the condition leads to cancer. Corticosteroids such as prednisone can help to suppress the antibodies that are attacking the nerve and muscle connections.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)

SLE is an autoimmune disease that causes the body to form antibodies against healthy cells and tissues. The symptoms of SLE, as described by Pet Wave, are shifting leg lameness, which means that the dog will first limp on one leg and then shift to another, as well as a lack of energy, little appetite or skin problems. The symptoms can be controlled with corticosteroids or other immunosuppressant drugs that will need to be used throughout the remainder of the dog's life.

Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA)

AIHA causes the body to attack its own red blood cells. Dogs with AIHA can have anemia, which is a lack of red blood cells. They may also have nose bleeds, dark urine or bloody bowel movements. This disease will result in death if it is left untreated. Pet Education explains that prednisone is commonly used to treat AHIA.

Pemphigus Foliaceus

According to the Mar Vista Animal Medical Center, this autoimmune disease causes the dog's immune system to attack its skin. The symptoms are crusts, lesions and hair loss around the dog's face, especially around his eyes and nose, as well as in the pads of his feet and in the groin. The condition is treated with steroids and immunosuppressant medications.

Volunteer Activities For The Elderly Handicapped

Disabilities and handicaps provide opportunities for employees and volunteers to be creative.

Elderly, handicapped individuals are often unfairly discriminated against in American and global society. Many have disabilities that fall within certain categories, such as cognitive, sensory, emotional, physical and neurological. While the handicapped senior may be unable to participate in specific tasks, she can serve in many types of volunteer roles that work around the specific disability.

Quiet Activities

Hospitals contain chronically and terminally ill children and adults who welcome opportunities to interact with different people. An elderly, handicapped volunteer can read to a child or color and make sketches. Volunteers can also play card or board games with adult patients, or provide cordial conversation.

Light-duty Work

Elderly, disabled volunteers with slight physical limitations can perform clerical tasks such as answering phones and filing papers. Other duties might include greeting clients, providing them with directions or dispensing information about the company. Many office tasks can be relegated to a seated position, so these job functions are generally not demanding.

Fundraising Initiatives

Many elderly, disabled persons were once vital members of organizations and could offer substantive, creative suggestions for fundraisers and other special events. Allowing volunteer opportunities to be extended to the elderly and handicapped is a great way to boost self-esteem and restore a sense of self-worth. Volunteers can help distribute promotional information about the company's fundraising initiatives and events.

Leash Laws In Fresno California

Dogs must be leashed in public areas of Fresno, Calif.

Fresno and Fresno County, California enacted leash laws to protect dogs from hazards such as automobiles and to keep dogs from becoming neighborhood nuisances, according to the Central California Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The CCSPCA is responsible for animal control and leash law services for the city of Fresno and Fresno County.

General Law

The Fresno County Code of Ordinances requires a dog to be either on a leash or "under the immediate control of some responsible person" when the dog is not on the property of its owner (or the person who possesses the dog at the time). The CCSPCA asks to be notified of loose or at-large dogs.

Danger Prevention

California law states that potentially threatening dogs should be kept indoors or securely fenced in, but such a dog can leave its home with a responsible adult on "a substantial leash, of appropriate length." In Fresno County, a dog that is quarantined by a health officer for biting or rabies can be restrained on a leash either on the owner's property or at the pound.

Park Rules

The city of Fresno has four dog parks, which are designated areas where dogs can run and play off the leash. The dog parks are located in Woodward, Basin, Roeding and Victoria-West parks. Citywide park rules state that dogs must be well behaved in the dog areas. Bothersome or aggressive dogs must be leashed.

Stop Bad Habits In A German Shepherd

German shepherds are highly intelligent.

German shepherds are known for their high intelligence and loyalty. They are an active breed that thrives on work, and they pick up obedience training quickly. However, they can also pick up bad behavior quickly, which is easier to stop than it is to begin. Bad habits in German shepherds often include barking, aggressive behavior, dominance and destructive tendencies. You can stop a bad habit in a German shepherd by repeatedly letting the dog know that its behavior is unacceptable.

Instructions

1. Reprimand the dog immediately whenever you witness bad behavior. Simply say "No" in a firm voice and, if necessary, pull the dog away from whatever it is doing. Be consistent -- if you let a German shepherd get away with something even once, it will think the behavior is acceptable.

2. If you can't catch the dog in the act, spy on it. If your German shepherd likes to get on the couch or open up the trashcan when it thinks you're not looking, let it think you have left the room, then wait with a squirt bottle to deter it.

3. Take away the opportunity to indulge in bad habits. If your German shepherd likes to destroy things when you're gone, take hit with you as often as possible. If you can't remove the opportunity to misbehave, wear the dog out through play and exercise. A tired dog will be less likely to bark or jump up on the bed.

4. Use positive reinforcement. Carry treats on your person at all times when you are working to break the dog's bad habits. Every time the shepherd does what you want it to do instead of its former behavior, reward it with a treat.

5. Work often on the "sit" and "stay" commands, using treats as rewards. Not only will these commands help you stop the dog in the act of doing something bad, they will also reinforce your dominance over the dog as leader of the "pack", making it easier for you to influence your dog.

How Much Medical Expenses Deduct From My Taxes

Use Schedule A to itemize deductions and claim medical expenses.

If you plan to deduct medical expenses, you must itemize deductions using Form 1040, Schedule A. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax code defines allowable medical expense deductions as payments made in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease. Deductible costs also include purchases for equipment, supplies and diagnostic equipment used for medical care. Medical care deductions cover medical and dental expenses for you, your spouse and your dependents.

Deduction Amount

For the 2012 tax year, your deduction for medical expense is limited to the amount paid out that is over 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income (AGI). For example, your AGI for 2012 is $50,000; 7.5 percent of your AGI equals $3,750; your medical expenses total $4,225; by subtracting $3,750 from $4,225, you arrive at a medical tax deduction of $475.

Deductible Medical Expenses

Medical expenses eligible for deduction include, but are not limited to, invoices paid to your doctor, dentist, chiropractor, psychiatrist, psychologists, surgeons and Christian Science practitioners for medical care; payments for hospital or long-term care; payments made for acupuncture therapy or smoking-cessation classes; prescription drugs, except for insulin, which does not require a prescription and qualifies as deductible; some transportation costs; false teeth; prescription glasses or contacts; hearing aids and guide dogs for those who are blind or deaf. Expenses also include insurance premiums that you paid for medical care, and certain qualified, long-term care insurance, as determined by your individual situation.

Non-Deductible Medical Expenses

Medically related expenses that pass the lawful test in state statutes but fail at the federal level, such as medical marijuana, are not deductible. Other nondeductible expenses include cosmetic surgery; health club dues; payments made into health savings or medical savings accounts; fees associated with whitening teeth; nonprescription drugs and medicines; nutritional supplements; medicines or drugs purchased outside the United States; and veterinary fees, among others.

Itemizing Deductions

In most cases a taxpayer itemizes deductions to lower his tax obligation. Therefore, make sure the total deductions you can legally claim exceed the standard deduction for your filing status. If not, choose the standard deduction if IRS rules do not limit its use. For 2012, the standard deduction for single taxpayers is $5,950; for married filing jointly, $11,900; for married filing separately, $5,950; for head of household, $8,700; and for a qualifying widow(er), $11,900.

Tax Law

Tax laws change at the whim of Congress and the administration. Keep that in mind when preparing your yearly federal tax returns. If in doubt as to the accuracy of your return or unsure of current tax law, whether state, local or federal, seek reliable assistance in the form of a tax professional.

Mate A Pit Bull

The pit bull breed is at risk for bans and breed legislations.

Mating pit bulls encompasses much more work than simply arranging a date for a stud and dam to meet for a romantic encounter. Pit bulls have had the misfortune of becoming victims of anti-pit bull ordinances and bans across the country that are seriously jeopardizing this breed's future. A pit bull breeder's goal, therefore, should mainly focus on the betterment and preservation of the pit bull breed. This entails conducting lots of research, screening the breeding stock for hereditary disorders and following strict code of ethics so as to breed responsibly and not further contribute to the surplus of pit bulls found in rescues and shelters across the nation.

Instructions

1. Read books, attend dog shows and get acquainted as much as you can with the American pit bull terrier standards. Consider enrolling in a breed club that promotes ethical breeding and discourages indiscriminate breeding and poor breeding practices.

2. Critically evaluate if your dam or stud qualifies as breeding material. The best way to determine this is by enrolling your pit bull in organized dog sport events and see how it ranks in the conformation ring. The more titles and certifications achieved, the more proof you have of owning quality breeding stock.

3. Plan the ideal time for breeding your pit bull stud or dam. Dams and studs should not be bred under the age of two. This means your dam should not be bred before its third or even fourth heat. Breeding earlier is highly counter-productive since your dam will likely not be physically or mentally ready to raise a litter of puppies.

4. Take your pit bull to your veterinarian. Have its hips and elbows x-rayed to obtain certification and clearance from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, have its heart evaluated and its thyroid levels checked, and have it certified free of any heritable eye diseases from the Canine Eye Registry Foundation. Studs and dams should also have their reproductive organs checked and their shots updated, and should undergo a brucellosis test.

5. Select a proper mate for your pit bull. Consider asking the help of a mentor with knowledge of important bloodlines. He should be capable of providing significant input on the pros and cons of particular breedings and provide advice on possible stud dogs.

6. Determine when the dam is in heat. Vaginal bleeding and swelling of the vulva indicate your pit bull is coming into proestrus. Generally, according to veterinarian Margareth V. Root Kustritz with the University of Minnesota, dams are at their peak of fertility any time between day 8 through 15, following the day the dam starts bleeding.

7. Take the dam to the stud's home. Studs are known to perform better when in the comfort of familiar surroundings. Provide the dam and stud with a non-slip surface such as a carpet or a large rug for better footing.

8. Supervise the mating. After flirting a little bit, the stud should cover the dam, and eventually, both male and female will be stuck together, back to back, in a ''tie." You may need to reassure the dam during this time as many become nervous and restless. If feasible, to heighten the chances of pregnancy, allow the dam and stud to breed every other day until the female no longer shows interest in the male. If all goes well, pit bull puppies should be on their way 63 days later.

Raise Pitbull Puppies

Pitbulls are a common dog breed in the United States and worldwide. Purebred pitbull puppies are easy to raise if you know what you are doing. Despite their negative connotations, most pitbull puppies are well-behaved and gentle, as long as they are socialized correctly. It is the breeder's job to raise a litter of pitbull puppies so that they will be suitable pets when they get to their permanent homes.

Instructions

1. Assist in the birth of the puppies. Many pitbull mothers pass on feelings about humans to the puppies they raise. If you assist in the birth, the mother will recognize that you are helping her. She will bond with you, and pass on the bonding to her puppies.

2. Pet and handle the puppies every day. Stay close to the whelping box, and pick up the puppies only after sanitizing your hands. If the mother growls or seems upset, use calming tones to speak to her. If necessary, remove her from the room for a few moments each day so you can handle the puppies. A good time to handle puppies is when the mother dog is outside going to the bathroom. Handling the puppies each day will mean that they grow used to you as soon as they become aware of their surroundings.

3. Touch the puppies' front and back paws as you handle them. Pitbull puppies are especially sensitive about their paws. Touching their paws as you hold them will let the puppies know you mean them no harm.

4. Offer them puppy milk when they get to be about four weeks old. Allow them to sniff and drink the milk as they please. They will begin to recognize that you, and other humans, equal food, love, and care.

5. Use a nail clipper on them as soon as they have small nails. The point is not necessarily to cut the nails, but to get them used to someone clipping nails.

6. Begin to take them outside of their puppy box and into your home at four to five weeks old. Expose them to cats, other dogs, and as many other people as you can. Pitbulls thrive on socialization. The more socialization you can give them, the more gentle they will be when they grow up.

7. Screen any homes before placing your puppies. Do not place puppies in homes before age nine weeks, or in homes that have not been screened. Throw out any applicants who have a negative impression of pitbulls or who view them as guard or attack dogs.

Teach Children Humane Education

Animals share our world--and the best time to learn to treat animals kindly and coexist with them--is when you're young. Here are some important things for both parents and teachers to include in humane education.

Instructions

1. Go over the basic needs of animals such as food, water, shelter, companionship and health/nutrition. For instance, when discussing companionship, explain why tethering or chaining pets is not a good idea.

2. Explain that although animals can't speak, they experience pain, hunger, fear, loneliness and other emotions similar to humans. Always refer to dogs, cats and other pets as "he" or "she" rather than "it."

3. Discuss the importance of spaying/neutering, including the health benefits, and how controlling pet overpopulation will decrease the number of homeless animals.

4. Teach an easily memorizable slogan such as "Kindness, Care, Compassion." Have the children make posters with these slogans to hang up in their rooms.

5. Visit an animal shelter. Let the children observe how the animals are cared for, and in accordance with what the shelter allows, let them take turns with hands-on duties like dog walking and cleanup. Also visit sanctuaries that house rescued farm animals. Most sanctuaries such as Farm Sanctuary (upstate New York and Northern California), Animal Acres (outside of Los Angeles) and Gentle Barn (outside of Los Angeles) offer guided tours (see Resources below).

6. Take a trip to the park and observe the animal inhabitants such as squirrels, birds and ducks. Discuss behaviors that may scare or harm the animals, as well as things the kids can do that will benefit them.

7. Visit a pet supply store and go over the basics that a pet owner needs in caring for a pet. You might also discuss the pros and cons of different toys and other pet products.

8. If teaching a class, arrange a guest visit from a veterinarian, vet tech or staff member/volunteer from an animal shelter or rescue. If you're a parent, ask permission from your vet to arrange a behind-the-scenes visit for your child and perhaps a friend.

9. Discuss animal issues that are in the news. Talk about new laws that benefit animals.

10. Ask the child to pick a celebrity role model, such as an animal advocate or one who has rescued pets. Explain that the trend for some celebrities to carry their dog around for show is not always in the best interest of the animal.

11. With older children, discuss why it's best not to buy puppies from pet shops and explain the general concept of puppy mills. Encourage adoption from shelters and rescues with catchy slogans for them to remember such as "Don't Shop...It's Kinder to Adopt."

12. Teach "Max's Animal Compassion Curriculum" (MACC), which is geared towards children ages 6 to 8 (first and second grade). It helps teachers, educators and individuals bring animal compassion into the classroom. MACC teaches children the importance of adopting from shelters and inspires them to help homeless pets in need. It also helps build character and confidence by having the children help, and possibly save another being. It is based on the book, "Max, the Shelter Dog," the story of a pit bull named "Max," who was abandoned at a shelter by his family. The story is from Max's perspective as he makes his way through the shelter system hoping to get adopted by a new family. Until further notice, you can order "Max, the Shelter Dog" and receive another free copy that you can donate to a local school or library (see Resources).

In the future, there will be a downloadable document of the MACC curriculum. In the meantime you can request a copy by emailing: nr@maxtheshelterdog.com

13. Urge children to report to you, another adult or teacher any acts of animal cruelty (including from their friends) that they may witness, such as rock throwing or torturing an animal. If you see your own child do something to harm pets or wildlife, make sure to reprimand him/her and teach that it's not acceptable.

Adopt At Cat

Bring home a kitten today!

Choosing to join the 37 million cat owners in America is as easy as picking out a little ball of fluff and bringing him home. However, there are things that new cat owners need to know before committing to owning a cat. Many people do not consider that indoor cats can live up to 20 years, so this is not a decision to make lightly. Cats also need love and attention. Too often the image of an aloof cat has left new cat owners with the impression that your new cat will not want or need your attention, but he will.

Instructions

1. Investigate the available options. Stop by the local animal shelter and ask about cats available for adoption. Most shelters will charge a minimal adoption free, usually $50 to $100, to adopt a cat, but the fee will usually include vetting, basic shots and spaying or neutering your new cat. Some people balk at the adoption fee, but Purina estimates that those expenses can cost $300 or more the first year you own a cat.

2. Visit with the potential pet. If you are adopting a kitten or giving an abandoned animal a home, you should spend the time observing and playing with the cat before simply bringing it home. Many shelters will allow or even insist on several visits before committing to adopt.

3. Research local veterinarians. In most communities, there are several vets with different specialties and price ranges. Choose a veterinarian that you can afford and that you like. If you don't like the vet, chances are your cat won't either.

4. Consider purchasing pet insurance. Coverage for kittens and young cats can cost around $15 a month. That insurance policy covers not only emergencies, but also routine vaccinations, annual checkups, micro-chipping and one major planned health service a year, such as having your cat spayed or having her teeth cleaned.

5. Think about all the commitments that come with owning a pet. Yes, a cat is generally more independent than a dog, but you will still have to provide clean water and fresh food daily. Most cats prefer a clean litter box, so daily scooping is also recommended. Your cat will also need plenty of daily play time as well. Be sure the people in the house are ready for the commitment to a pet.

Build A Balcony In Sims Complete Collection

Why should your Sims be forced to spend all day indoors when they can enjoy their fresh virtual air from the comfort of a second floor balcony? "The Sims Complete Collection" features every expansion pack of the first game in the series along with the same building tools that made the game a hit. Creating a balcony taps further into your architectural imagination; just be careful that it doesn't tap too far into your Sim's wallet, or you may end up controlling the destinies of digital squatters.

Instructions

1. Load up a game or build the first story of your house. Once complete, open up the "Build" menu and select the "Stairs" icon. Choose a set of stairs and place them on the first floor of your house.

2. Select the "Second Story" view mode on the left side of the toolbar. The second story of your house encompasses the entire first story's surface area plus one extra square of space on all sides.

3. Add flooring and drywall to your second story. Don't worry about leaving any room for the balcony, as this will be built as an addition onto the house. Return to the "First Story" view.

4. Choose the spot where you want the balcony to be located. After it has been selected, choose "Pillars" from the build menu and set them up on the first floor of the house, under where your balcony is to be located. Each pillar can support a three-by-three area of flooring, so keep this in mind when adding your supports.

5. Head up to the second story and select flooring for your balcony. Notice that the area above the pillars is grayed out, meaning that you can now build your balcony over the beams. Click and drag your mouse over the balcony area to lay down the flooring.

6. Select the "Fence" option from the "Build Mode" tool bar and choose a low fence for your balcony railing. This will add decorative appeal though your Sims won't ever leap off an unfenced balcony. Click and drag your mouse around the perimeter of your balcony to set the fence. Your fence should cover three sides of the balcony with drywall covering the fourth.

7. Choose an entry for your balcony from the "Doors" option and place it on the drywall between your house's interior and the balcony. Now enter "Live Mode" and your Sims will make their way onto your new balcony.

Where To Post A Job For Free

Corporations, small businesses and nonprofits frequently pay to advertise jobs in local or national newspapers. Yet, for the human resource department, there is no guarantee that this investment will yield a suitable candidate. Increasingly, employers who have job openings are looking for alternatives to paid job posting. Using free sources to post vacancy announcements can help companies conserve funds. You can find quality candidates without spending your entire recruitment budget using quality, highly trafficked Web sites and community services.

Conventional Job Boards

According to Reuters, in 2009, some of the country's major job boards waived job-posting fees in an effort to connect employers and job seekers. Beyond.com is the largest in this category. However, 50 State Jobs and other boards have also offered free job postings for employers. Some nonprofit-oriented job boards, such as Idealist, also waived fees temporarily or for specific periods during 2009. The Deep Sweep nonprofit job board is a free service for employers and job seekers.

Free Online Classifieds

Craigslist is the nation's largest free classified ad provider, but it now charges for job postings in most cities. You can still post free job announcements on Kijiji, an online classified service owned by eBay. This site has been operating since 2007 and covers nearly as many U.S. cities as Craigslist, as well as some in Canada.

Social Media Sites

Many social media sites have free classifieds and job-posting options. Once you register and join these sites, you can send your job vacancy announcements through the social media network directly or by using job boards for specific groups and industries. LinkedIn and Twitter are two of the most active sites; both allow you to target your job postings by participating in appropriate interest groups.

On LinkedIn, once you create a profile and join groups, you can post positions in discussions or on each group's job board. To post on Twitter, you simply tweet your job opportunities to your followers. After you register, look around the site and start following some of the key people whose interests fit your mission. As you gain followers and update your status messages, you can inform people of your job opportunities. With only 140 characters, you need to practice brevity and create short URLs that link to the full job description on your site. Twitter has quite a few job feeds that you can use as examples for implementing a social media job posting strategy.

More Alternatives

The nation's labor departments do not charge fees for employment posting. Because the unemployed must register with the state labor office, your vacancy announcement will get plenty of views from eager, motivated applicants. Visit the U.S. Department of Labor to find the labor department for every state. Most college and university career services offices do not charge fees for posting your job announcements. In addition to providing information to current students, many career service offices also provide job leads to alumni through newsletters and special e-mails. Don't overlook national associations and community organizations that may be relevant to your recruitment needs. Contact them to find out if they provide job leads to their members.

What Taxes Need To Be Paid On The Surrender Of Variable Universal Life Insurance

When you surrender a variable universal life insurance policy, you sell off all of the mutual funds in the policy and then cancel the contract. You receive all of the cash surrender value listed in the policy. But, the type of tax you pay on the surrender amount is different from the amount you would pay if you'd invested in mutual funds outside of the policy.

Significance

You will pay ordinary income tax on all of the gains in the contract. This means that any amount you receive in excess of the total premium paid to the policy is treated as a gain subject to income tax. This tax must be paid in the year you receive the cash value of the policy and filed on your next tax return.

Effect

When paying income taxes on the money you receive from your variable life policy, the gain adds to your gross income. This might cause your income for the year to be much higher than it otherwise would be. In turn, you may be pushed into a higher marginal tax rate. Because of this, you may pay a higher average tax than you would otherwise pay. This may result in you receiving much less than you had expected from your insurance policy.

Prevention

To prevent taxation of your policy, you must keep the insurance in force. Variable universal life insurance offers you the opportunity to withdraw money from your cash value or borrow against it. Your insurance company may offer a preferred loan rate. If you keep your policy, you won't pay income tax. In fact, you'll gain access to your policy values on a tax-free basis through policy loans. Withdrawals are tax-free up to your basis in the policy. Your cost basis is the total amount of premiums you've paid into the policy.

Consideration

If your variable policy is not performing well, consider switching the mutual funds to a fixed interest fund. Otherwise, consider transferring the policy into an annuity contract. This can be done without triggering an income tax liability. The transfer is called a 1035 exchange. Once you exchange the policy for an annuity, you cannot reverse the process, so be sure you really want to exchange the policy. If you are not an experienced investor, it may be best to switch to a fixed annuity. This way, you won't lose money in the future, and you allow the insurance company to manage the investments on your behalf. You will get a guaranteed rate of return and can better plan your future.

The Pros & Cons Of Having A Pet Cat

Cats make great companions, but getting one requires some thought.

Owning a pet is a big responsibility that you should not consider lightly. It is important to choose the right kind of pet for your family. When deciding whether or not a cat is a good fit for your family, make a list of pros and cons that are specific to cats before adopting one into your family.

Independence

Cats are a bit more independent than dogs in general. If you are spending the night away or even a weekend, you are able to set out enough food and water and make sure the litter box is fresh and then leave your cat by itself. Cats also do not demand constant attention from their owners. In fact, some cats actually prefer to be left to themselves a majority of the time. Others do crave attention, but also enjoy their alone time. Each cat has its own personality, so choose one that matches your attention abilities if possible.

Companionship

If you are looking for companionship, a cat is capable of offering it to you. Whereas some cats prefer to be left alone, most of them become attached to their owners. Even cats that run and hide when someone comes to visit your home will have no qualms about snuggling in your lap for a nap or nudging your hand for petting. Many cats enjoy playing, as well as snuggling at bedtime or just for a nap, so if you are looking for a companion, a cat is a good choice.

Space

Unlike many dogs, cats are small and do not require a lot of space. This means that if you are living in an apartment, you can have a cat just as easily as if you lived in a house as long as the landlords allow it. Some cats require a scratching post, but if your cat is declawed, it would not need that either. All you really need is space for a litter box and maybe a cat bed. Anything else is extra and not required by a cat.

Smell

Unless you can train your cat to do its business outside or in the toilet, owning a cat can be a smelly experience. Some litter boxes are open at the top and allow the smell of cat feces and urine to spread through the area. This can be alleviated by using odor-absorbing litter, using air fresheners and cleaning the litter box on a regular basis. If the litter box is not cleaned regularly, you will not only need to deal with the smell, you may end up cleaning up messes in other areas of the house. Many cats will not use a badly soiled litter box.

Cost

It is important to price various goods and services before committing to cat ownership, such as veterinary costs, food and litter. Consider the start-up costs, as well, including a litter box, scratching post, toys and food dishes, if you have never had a cat before. In addition to these predictable costs, you must be aware that unforeseen costs may pop up. Your cat may become ill, requiring more veterinary visits, surgery or medication. Ask yourself if you are ready and willing to pay for these things for your cat if it should need them.

Travel

Many cats do not enjoy travelling. They will cry and fuss the entire time they are in the car, making it difficult to travel with them. If you are someone who doesn't travel or only takes very short weekend or overnight trips, you can easily leave your cat at home with the proper provisions. However, if you are someone who regularly takes one- or two-week vacations, a cat may not be your best choice, unless you have someone who is willing to come to your home to care for your cat every couple of days or you are willing to board it.
