Questions To Ask A Bulldog Breeder

Originating in the British Isles, bulldogs are beloved for their gentle and often comical disposition.

According to American Kennel Club registration statistics, the bulldog has steadily gained popularity in the past 10 years, topping out as the sixth-most popular breed in the United States in 2010. With this popularity comes an increased demand and an even higher price tag. Avoid the temptation to price shop; instead, seek out a reputable breeder for a happy, healthy bulldog friend for years to come.

Background and Qualifications

A good breeder knows his breed inside and out. As with so many professions, there is simply no substitute for experience. Ask how long the seller has been breeding bulldogs. Gauge his knowledge by inquiring about breed characteristics, temperament, exercise needs and health issues. Confirm the dogs are registered with the American Kennel Club. Reputable breeders generally belong to breed clubs, many of which provide referral services to pet-seekers. The Bulldog Club of America's breeder referral program holds participating breeders to the highest ethical standards and disciplines for infractions. Finally, breeders committed to the breed standard are often involved in showing their dogs. Ask if the seller actively shows dogs, inquiring specifically about the show history of the puppies' parents.

Health and Welfare

Puppies raised in the home, with the breeder's family, are better socialized.

Eliminate the risk of dealing with a broker by confirming the seller bred the puppies. If so, ask to see the puppy's parents. At least one of the parents, preferably the female, should be on the premises. The quality of the dogs' environment is critical to the behavioral and physical development of the puppies. Are the dogs kept indoors and not outside or in runs? Are their living quarters clean and well-maintained? Food should be of high quality. Are the dogs happy and sociable or do they seem skittish? Unfortunately, bulldogs are prone to a number of health problems and congenital abnormalities, among them: hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, cherry eye and heat sensitivity. An ethical breeder will not hesitate to inform prospective buyers about potential issues and explain policies for reducing such incidence. As if the breeder screens the health of adults before breeding and sterilizes animals with congenital defects. Find out if all of the puppy's veterinary records as well as a written health guarantee convey with the purchase.

Qualifying the Buyer

A good breeder will not hand over a puppy to the first buyer with cash in hand. Breeders who genuinely have the dog's best interest at heart want to ensure that their puppies will live long and happy lives with their new family. A breeder will ask what the buyer plans to do if their life circumstances change abruptly -- divorce, illness, a move or other unforeseen events. Likewise, the breeder may ask what will happen if the dog becomes unexpectedly ill and how far the buyer is willing to go to pursue treatment. The buyer should be asked to provide references as well as the name of a veterinarian, existing or proposed. Lastly, to ensure the best possible match, a breeder should be willing to continue to answer questions or mentor long after the puppy has gone to the buyer's home.

Buyer Beware

Reputable breeders should have a good relationship with one or more local veterinarians.

Too often, less than reputable breeders sell puppies with health or temperament issues. Avoid possible heartache by taking the time to select a knowledgeable, ethical and compassionate breeder. A critical step in this process is to obtain references from past clients as well as the breeder's veterinarian. Unfortunately, the rising popularity of the breed has led to a number of scams, most involving Internet sales. A good breeder will never sell puppies through pet stores -- a common venue for commercial puppy mills -- or over the Internet. Beware of con artists who require a small upfront payment for the promise of a puppy that does not exist. Protect against fraud and deal only with a breeder willing to answer any and all questions.

Hunting Dog Training In Minnesota

A dog points to where the game is.

Hunting is one of the more popular outdoor activities in Minnesota. Whether hunting deer, fowl or pheasant, many people like to have their dogs accompany them on their adventure. The dog, of course, will need training in the sport of hunting.

Function

Many hunters in Minnesota use dogs when tracking during particular hunting seasons, such as waterfowl season, which begins in October, or pheasant season, which runs mid-October through the beginning of January. Dogs are used to flush and retrieve game and fowl because they can often enter certain areas humans cannot, which makes them a priceless addition.

Breeds

Many breeds of dogs can be trained for hunting, depending on the game sought, but the most common breeds used are pointers, retrievers, spaniels, setters and hounds. Terriers can also be trained for tracking small game such as mice. Like hunt trials, this has become a sport known as earthdog trials.

Types

Dogs are usually trained to specialize in a certain type of hunting. Retrievers tend to love water so they are ideal for a waterfowl hunter. Spaniels, setters and pointers are considered better for pheasant hunting. Hounds are usually chosen for land-based hunting and terriers are best for earthdogging because of their short stature.

Considerations

A hunter should consider learning different training methods if he going to be training two or more dogs. Like humans, every dog is different and learns differently.

Misconceptions

You cannot go into a training session without an objectionable plan and goal. Also, while it is a common belief that yelling equals firm when making corrections, dogs will soon become tone deaf and assume that is your normal tone of voice, according to the Minnesota chapter of the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association.

Service Dog Donation Gifts

The American Disabilities Act allows service dogs access to buildings and transportation.

Whether used for assisting the blind, hearing impaired or as signal dogs and for general assistance, service dogs provide invaluable support to their owners by supporting the disabled in their daily lives. However they are used, there are multiple options available for those wanting to express their gratitude to service dogs and the work they do.

Monetary Donations

As with nearly every nonprofit industry, organizations that coordinate service dogs for the disabled are in constant need of monetary donations to help with the costs associated with service dogs. From puppy raising to training programs, there are often countless areas that can use monetary donations. Depending on a person's financial means, most organizations have options for monthly giving, annual sponsorships or one-time donations.

Dog Walking

For those who want to donate time, a simple option requires only a pair of walking shoes. People can contact a service dog organization and offer their time to walk service dogs in training. This gift is a basic need to help these animals hone the skills they will need to be successful service dogs.

Volunteering

Depending on the organization you work with, volunteering options can vary. For example, Texas Hearing & Service Dogs takes volunteers to be foster trainers for their service dogs. Through this type of volunteering opportunity, people can have the chance to be part of the process of developing and training service dogs.

Fundraising

Raising money to donate to a service dog organization is a way to combine time and monetary resources. For those who may not have the financial means themselves to donate money toward service dogs, donating their time to raise and collect funds is a good option. Fundraising efforts can range from contacting businesses to solicit donations to gathering a group of people and hosting a car wash to raise money for a service dog organization.

Donate An Auto To Charity

Used car

If you have a clunky car and you do not know what to do with it, one option may be to donate the car to charity. Since you will be helping others with your donation, donating a car can be a rewarding experience. There are many non-profit organizations to which you can donate your car: the American Red Cross, YMCA, Cancer Research Institute and others. If the organization to which you donate your car is approved by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the donation can be used as a tax deduction.

Instructions

1. Look for the type of charity to which you would like to give your car. Do research online to find out about the organization and how much it will give for the car. Make sure it is a reputable non-profit organization.

2. Research and avoid third-party organizations. Third-party organizations keep about 50 percent to 90 percent of the car's worth, leaving the charity with much less.

3. Find out if the organization you are contacting is approved by the IRS. Visit the IRS website and search for Publication 78 to find other qualifying non-profit organizations.

4. After selecting the non-profit organization to which you want to donate your car, transport the car to this organization. Transporting the car yourself will reduce costs for the charity.

5. Get documents or receipts from the organization to claim your tax deduction.

Start A Walkathon Team

Walk-a-thons are very popular. You can support a great cause while getting a terrific workout. A great idea is to start a walk-a-thon team either with family and friends, or at your place of business. Organizing a walk-a-thon team just takes a little planning and preparation. You can do it!

Instructions

1. Contact the organization you would like to do the walk-a-thon for and ask them for materials. They will send you registration forms and information about the charity to give to all interested participants.

2. Register yourself and try to get several other people to register with you before you announce you have a team. The fact that you can say you already have some people signed up will probably get people excited and they'll want to join in on the fun.

3. Create a name for your team. Ask teammates for their input to get a great name for your team.

4. Set a team fund-raising goal. Have a chart where everyone can see it, or send out e-mail updates on everyone's progress.

5. Encourage friendly challenges between people to reach fund-raising goals. If you are doing this as a family, it could be adults vs. children; a corporate team could be department vs. department.

6. Arrange some prizes for targets reached. Have some of the prizes be not just for fund-raising goals, but for efforts being made. Examples of things to reward could be for sending out the most letters or emails to try to raise funds, or making the most telephone calls.

7. Create some weekly or bi-weekly walking dates where everyone can get together and take a walk. This is great exercise and will get everyone in shape to do the walk.

Remember Your Pet With Cremation Pet Jewelry

Cremation pet jewelry

Cremation pet jewelry provides a special way to keep your pet close to your heart, both literally and figuratively. This type of pet memorial jewelry has a small compartment that can be filled with your pet's ashes.

Instructions

1. Decide what type of jewelry you want to purchase, and how much you want to spend. Pendants and lockets are the most common type of pet cremation jewelry and are available in a variety of precious and semi-precious metals, including pewter, bronze, silver, and gold.

2. Choose a design that is a fitting remembrance for your pet. You can place a picture of your pet inside a locket, choose a pendant representative of your dog or cat's breed, or choose a symbolic design. For example, a butterfly may represent freedom from earthly pains and cares. Or, a heart to symbolize the bond you shared with your pet.

3. Shop around online for cremation pet jewelry. Because this type of jewelry is highly specialized, you're more likely to find better pricing and selection online. In fact, chances are you won't find pet cremation jewelry in local stores.

4. When you receive your cremation pet jewelry, follow the instructions for filling the compartment with your pet's ashes. Make sure the compartment is well-sealed so that none of the ashes escape.

Train Coonhound Pups

Using treats as motivation is one way to train your puppy.

Coonhounds are hunting dogs and pets, but training a coonhound puppy is a difficult, often frustrating process. New owners may discover that coonhound puppies tend to learn and mature more slowly than many other breeds. They have a high amount of energy, and this can make training them quite a task. However, if done properly, you can train your coonhound and earn the animal's respect and affection. The relationship you'll have with your coonhound will make the effort well worth it.

Instructions

1. Train your puppy to walk on a leash by attaching the leash to the puppy's collar and letting the animal drag it around inside the home while supervised. Once the puppy is used to the weight of the leash, try holding it and letting him guide you. When he is accustomed to this, begin taking him on regular walks. Coonhounds require a large amount of exercise and must be walked daily to be healthy and happy.

2. Introduce your puppy to the scent of raccoons by buying a container of raccoon scent from a hunting store and using it to mark an old cloth or rag. Tie the rag to the end of a rope and let your puppy examine the scent and become interested. Then drag the cloth across your yard, hiding it behind something. Let the puppy follow the scent and when she finds the rag, reward her with treats and affection.

3. Increase the difficulty of tracking by dragging the scented cloth to a tree, then placing it up high in the branches. Let your puppy follow the scent and if he stops under the tree, wait for him to bark and indicate that he has found the "raccoon." Reward him with a treat and affection. Continue to increase the difficulty by making each trail longer and adding more obstacles.

4. Show your puppy the woods by taking her to an area that is known to have raccoons, far from busy roads. Encourage your puppy to lead you on her leash and explore. If she finds a raccoon's scent, let her follow it to completion and reward her for the correct behavior. If she follows the incorrect scent, give her a gentle but firm verbal correction and lead her away.

5. Practice firing your gun with your puppy nearby. Coonhounds must get used to the sound and smell of guns early in life. Begin in an environment the puppy is used to, then slowly introduce him to guns being fired in the wild.

6. Take your puppy on a hunt with other coonhounds. If you don't have other dogs, go hunting in a group. Your puppy will learn behave on a hunt from the other dogs.

Breed Mixed Pitbulls

As long as they are not trained to be violent, Pit Bulls can be very friendly dogs.

Pit Bull is a broad term that refers to several breeds of dog -- most notably, the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. These breeds are mixes of various types of Bulldogs and Terriers. The Pit Bull has become one of the most populous breeds of dog in the world, which has led to Pit Bull mixes being very common as well as diverse. Despite their reputation for aggression, Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes make great pets because of their affectionate, loyal and intelligent nature.

Instructions

Breeding the Dogs

1. Choose the dogs. The genetic background of the dogs is very important in this selection. The most common Pit Bull mix is with a Labrador. (Labrabull) Pitweilers (Pit Bull and Rottweiler) and Bullboxers (Pitbull and Boxer) are popular as well. Also consider the age of the dogs. They reach full maturity at about 2 years old. Then look at their physical characteristics. Make sure they have the attributes of the breed you desire.

2. Take the dogs to a vet. Have them checked for parasites and infections. Ensure they are vaccinated. However, do not vaccinate the mother after she has already bred. This can cause birth defects.

3. Wait for the bitch to go into heat. After reaching full maturity, a female dog will go into heat about every 6 months. If the stud is in a nearby pen, you will see her genitals swell and discharge. The stud should react to her scent.

4. Put the dogs together about 2 to 3 days after you observe signs of the female coming into heat. Allow nature to take its course. You can leave the stud in the pen for a day or two without danger to either dog.

5. Take care of the mother. Talk to your vet about supplemental vitamins. Provide plenty of fresh water. Clean her kennel regularly, and give her fresh bedding. About three weeks before delivery, some breeders recommend giving her puppy food for the extra nutrition it provides.

6. Prepare a whelping box for the puppies. This box should be about 6 inches longer than the mother when she is lying on her side. It should have a rail so that she does not lie on the pups after they're born. Every point should be accessible. Also place several layers of newspaper and plastic one after the other at the bottom of the box. When the paper is soiled, you can remove a layer and reveal a fresh one underneath.

7. Be alert for the delivery. The gestation period for dogs is about 63 days after conception. The mother could suffer certain birthing problems. Be ready to take her to an emergency vet if necessary. When the pups are born, write down the date, total number of pups, the sex of each pup and the number of stillborn pups.

8. Take care of the pups. Keep them clean and warm. Make sure they are all getting milk. Clean the whelping box frequently. Take them to a vet at 6 weeks old.

Photography Ideas For Shelter Animals

Dressing an animal in a costume helps convey its lovable personality.

It is possible to encourage animal adoption through the powerful medium of photography. Animal shelter staff can use photography in a variety of ways to spread the message of pet adoption for animals in animal shelters. Photography campaigns do not need to be dour black and white images of sad dogs and cats, but can show off the joy of each individual animal's personality.

Artistic Photo Spread

Invite local professional photojournalists, photographers, art photography students, and other experts in the field to shoot a photo spread of the animals at your shelter as a way of spreading the message of pet adoption through the artistic realism of photography. Encourage photographers to include information about the animal at the bottom of their photograph whether it is displayed in a newspaper, magazine, art gallery, or personal website. Include the adoption information with the shelter's name and contact details in the caption of each photograph.

Animals in Costumes

Taking photographs of animals dressed up in costumes is a festive way of conveying their lovable personalities to the public. Relate the costumes to a specific holiday, and send the photos in newsletters or upload them to the shelter's website. For example, around Halloween time, dress up the animals as witches or pumpkins and use the photos to encourage pet adoption. Include an appropriate tag line at the bottom of each photo such as, "Halloween is spooky, but I'm not! Please adopt me!"

Animal Facebook

Creating mock social networking pages for each shelter animal is a concept that works in both digital and print formats. Replicate the design in the format of a recognizable website, such as Facebook, with a profile photo and an info section. Combine the different pages into a booklet, and send it out to the community to encourage people to adopt the animals. For a more ambitious project, create a mock animal social networking website for your shelter that allows people to browse in search of a pet to adopt.

Photography Tree Ornaments

To encourage pet adoption at Christmas time, create Christmas tree ornaments with a photograph of a shelter animal glued onto it. Place the animal's name on the back of the ornament, and add information about his personality and go about adopting him. Place the shelter animal ornaments on a Christmas tree that is stationed in a venue frequented by the local community, such as a church, grocery store, or library.

House Cats That Look Like Tigers

Some domestic cat breeds look like tigers

Several rare cat breeds exist that look very similar to wild cats such as tigers. Four such breeds that have similarities to these wild cats are Bengals, savannahs, highland and desert lynx and toygers. They are hard to find and usually pricey breeds, but they are unlike the majority of domestic house cats.

Bengals

The Bengal cat is a cross between a domestic cat and an Asian leopard cat. The spotted pattern on its coat is derived from the Asian leopard cat, which is found in central Asia. Jean Sudgen was the first to breed a Bengal in 1963 by crossing a shorthaired domestic cat with a female Asian leopard cat. A male Bengal weighs between 14 and 20 pounds while females weigh anywhere from 10 to 12 pounds. They have very muscular, long bodies with small rounded ears.

Savannahs

A savannah is an African serval mixed with a domestic cat. The savannah was first bred in the mid-1980s by Judee Frank but this breed did not gain popularity and recognition until the late 1990s. They have brownish orange coats with jet-black spots and are the largest hybrid cat available today. Males can weigh 15 to 30 pounds and females can weigh anywhere from 9 to 17 pounds. As of 2010, the price for a savannah cat is anywhere from $1,000 to $20,000, depending on the family line.

Highland and Desert Lynx

The desert lynx and highland lynx differ in their ears. A highland lynx has curled ears and the desert lynx has straight ears. The very first litter of highland lynx was born in 1995 at Timberline Cattery. Males can get up to 20 pounds and females weigh an average of 12 pounds. They have black stripes and spots with coats ranging in color from ebony to chocolate, silver, tawny, red and cream. They have the same life expectancy as a domestic cat and require the same veterinary care as other pet cats. They do not require a special diet.

Toygers

The toyger breed was first developed by Judy Sugden in the USA in the 1980s. It is the result of breeding a striped domestic short hair with a bengal tabby. Judy hoped that by 2010 the toyger would truly represent a wild tiger with shorter ears, smaller eyes and a wider nose tip. They have an orange and tan background with dark stripes. It has genes passed on from the Asian leopard cat.

Timid Dog Behavior

Dogs that are timid can sometimes act aggressively.

Timid dogs typically lack self-confidence and are unsure about the goings-on around them. Timid dogs may appear shy or even aggressive when approached, or they may urinate. Dogs can display timid behavior for a number of reasons, including abuse and improper socialization. Working with or adopting a timid dog presents a few challenges, because they should be handled differently than a normal dog.

Causes

Some breeds of dogs are naturally timid, suggests the I Heart Paws website. Many miniature and toy breeds can be extremely shy. However, not all dogs are born this way and their experiences make them timid. Abuse---both physically and verbally---can create a timid dog, as can lack of exposure to humans and animals. If a dog is not socialized when it is younger, it may become fearful of new people and situations.

Symptoms

Timid dogs often shy away from people. They back away from you when approached, hide behind whatever they can or run in the opposite direction. Some timid dogs even growl, bark or attempt to bite anyone who comes near them, out of fear. A timid dog may even urinate when approached by a human or dog. Timid dogs are not outgoing and usually never come to you.

Diagnosis

Some owners are confused as to whether their dogs are naturally aggressive or just plain timid. To know for sure, you can take your dog to an animal professional for a diagnosis. Veterinarians, behaviorists and obedience trainers will likely be able to tell you if the dog is genuinely aggressive or displaying that behavior out of fear. The professional will likely perform an exam and watch the dog's behavior closely to make the diagnosis.

Solution

To help a dog break out of its shell and overcome its timid behavior, spend lots of time working with the canine. Go slow and never force the dog to do anything. In addition, motivate it by giving it its favorite food, suggests the Veterinary Partner website. Praise the dog whenever it shows signs that it is overcoming its timidness, such as greeting you or allowing you to pet it without cowering. Praising and rewarding the dog builds its confidence and helps to develop a trusting relationship with you. The more you work with your dog and spend time together, the more you will start to see the dog work through its shy behavior.

Warning

Timid dogs can become aggressive and unintentionally inflict harm when they feel threatened. Even if you think the dog trusts you, it can still behave aggressively. Therefore, never fully trust the dog and watch for signs of aggression, such as growling and snarling. Never corner or trap a timid dog, or it may become defensive. Watch for panting, drooling, urination or restlessness during training sessions. If you witness these behaviors, you have likely pushed the dog too far and it needs a break.

Use Clear Comfort Test Strips

Clear Comfort is a chlorine-free pool care system. Four products are provided to kill bacteria, prevent algae growth, keep water clear and clean the pool filter. Most dip-and-read test strips change colors after measuring the levels of pH, alkalinity and chlorine. Because Clear Comfort does not use chlorine, the test strips measure the level of sanitizer in the water instead, along with pH and alkalinity. The water should be tested at least once a week and after heavy rain. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Clear Comfort 3-Way Test Strips

1. Remove one Clear Comfort 3-Way test strip from the bottle. Replace the bottle cap tightly.

2. Dip the test strip into the water for two seconds and then remove it. Hold the test strip level with the pad side up for 30 seconds.

3. Compare the colors on the 3-way strip to the color charts on the test strip bottle to find the levels for pH and alkalinity. The pH should read between 7.2 and 7.8, and alkalinity between 125 and 150 ppm.

4. Dip the test strip once more and move it back and forth in the water for 30 seconds. Remove the strip and compare the sanitizer (biguanide) color to the color on the test strip bottle. The sanitizer level should be between 30 and 50 ppm.

Clear Comfort Clarifier Test Strips

5. Remove one Clear Comfort Clarifier Test Strip from the bottle. Replace the bottle top tightly.

6. Dip the test strip into the pool water for one second and then take it out. Shake off any excess water and hold the strip level with the pad side up for 60 seconds.

7. Compare the color on the test strip with the diagram on the bottle. The clarifier level should fall between 20 and 60 ppm.

Breed Monkeys On Petz Monkeyz House

In the game "Petz Monkeyz House" for the Nintendo DS, you can adopt and buy pet monkeys and befriend and raise them. You can interact with your monkeys by playing with them, feeding them and caring for them. If you have a male and a female monkey, you can attempt to pair them so that they will mate and have a baby monkey.

Instructions

1. Get a baby male and a baby female monkey in the game.

2. Raise the male and female monkeys so that they become fully mature adults; they cannot mate until they are both adults.

3. Interact with and play with both monkeys in the same room. Give them toys to play with so that they can play with you and with each other; this will let the monkeys start developing a relationship.

4. Determine your monkeys' compatibility with each other. If there is a smiley face between the two of them when they are together, then the monkeys like each other and will likely mate.

5. Put the monkeys together, alone, in a room. If they like each other, they will mate and have a baby.

Adopt A Cybunny

A Cybunny is a creature in the cyber gaming world of Neopia. Cybunnies are adorable creatures that resemble rabbits. Cybunnies are a limited edition Neopet and there are only a certain number available for adoption. From time to time, more Cybunnies are released so, if you keep checking back, you might be lucky enough to own one.

Instructions

Set Up A Neopets Account

1. Go to http://www.neopets.com. Register--registration is free--and set up an account. Your account information will include a user lookup, password, hobbies, screen name, email address and date of birth.

2. Create your Neopet once you have an account. Neopets come in a variety of species, but we have already established that you want a Cybunny. Since Cybunnies are rare, you cannot create one from the "Create A Neopet" page at this time. However, keep checking the page. Since you can have more than one Neopet, it's advisable to go ahead and create another species of Neopet to keep your account active until you can adopt a Cybunny.

3. Investigate the Neopian Pound. At the Neopian Pound you can find Neopets abandoned by their owners. Click on the "Adopt" door at the Neopian Pound. This will show you all Neopets available for adoption. If there are no Cybunnies available at the Neopian Pound, check back often.

4. Play games and try to earn Neopoints and rare items. If you have a Neofriend (a friend you've met on Neopets) who has a Cybunny, you might be able to persuade your Neofriend into transferring ownership of his Cybunny to you via the Neopian Pound (this is where your Neopoints and/or rare items could come in handy). You can transfer one Neopet per month to a new owner from the Neopian Pound.

5. Meet and make friends who have Cybunnies as pets by going to Guild Headquarters and do a search for the keyword "Cybunny." From there you will see the numerous guilds dedicated to Cybunny lovers. In fact, one guild called "Bunny Love" has its own adoption center.

Alternative Options To Euthanizing Animals

Adoption is one of the best ways to keep animals safe from euthanasia.

Owners of terminally ill pets often face the dilemma of agreeing to euthanize them. Even healthy animals -- some abandoned by their owners -- often face the same fate. Euthanizing animals is a common practice in the U.S. According to the American Humane Association, there were about 3.7 million animals euthanized in the U.S. in 2008 alone. Although the practice is prevalent, there are alternative available to help avoid animal euthanasia.

Reasons for Euthanizing Animals

There are two main reasons why euthanasia is a common practice in the US: the pet is terminally ill and the animal stayed in a shelter for too long without anyone adopting it. The justification for the first reason is simple enough, when owners think that their pets will be better off euthanized rather than live, often battling with disease or old age. The second reason, though, is all about cost. Animal shelters do not have enough funding to support all the animals they get, and often need to euthanize animals in order for the shelter to survive financially.

Home Hospice

For owners of terminally ill animals, home hospice is an option to avoid euthanasia. Just like human hospices, the philosophy behind an animal hospice is taking care of your pet at home and minimizing the level of pain and suffering it experiences by providing proper medication, care and feeding. Veterinarians supporting this option often train and teach pet owners take care of their pets at home. Skills, such as inject intravenous medication, as well as set up sleeping areas properly, are some of the common techniques needed by pet-owners.

Animal Retirement Centers

Owners who opt not to euthanize old or terminally ill pets, but are too busy to take care of them at home, can take their pets to animal retirement centers. Just like human retirement centers, animals are taken care of in the best way possible. Exercises, proper medication and accommodations are provided. There are veterinarians monitoring the centers to ensure pets are taken care of properly.

Neutering and Adoption

Euthanasia of healthy animals is often a distressing thought to people, as it occurs commonly for homeless animals. Two solutions counter this concern. The first alternative is to neuter pets to control the general population in a community. This means fewer animals that shelters need to accommodate and ultimately euthanize. Another alternative option is adoption of animals in shelters instead of buying from breeders or pet shops. The American Humane Society states that about half of sheltered animals are adopted each year, but the other half is euthanized. When adopting a pet, each person should consider the pet's breed and its compatibility with their lifestyle. Doing so will prevent another potentially abandoned animal.

Effectiveness Of Personality Tests On Career Choice

Taking a personality test might bring a fresh perspective on career choices.

Matching your career to your personality is the key to having a successful and long professional life. Because active people usually spend more time at work than at home, their careers should not be a burden.

MBTI

Career counselors frequently use the Myers Briggs personality test (also known as the Myers Briggs Type Indicator or MBTI) to assist clients in finding the career that suits them. It is based on the principle that the career has to match the way individuals think and feel about the world and the way they make decisions.

Personality Differences

Each individual has distinct personality traits and acts differently from others. These differences determine what type of individual matches a certain career. According to the type test, individuals can be extroverted or introverted, sensing or intuitive, thinking or feeling and judging or perceiving.

Efficiency

There are other personality tests, such as the Keirsey Temperament Sorter. Their goal is to evaluate people's personalities and to give them ideas about career choices according to the answers provided by the test takers. Their results are not to be taken ad litteram; they just direct the test takers toward a profession that matches their personality and attitude.

Take Someone To Small Claims Court In California

In California, the limit for a small claims suit is $7,500.

Under California law, you may bring a small claims suit against anyone for a monetary amount of not more than $7,500. Some of the more common small claims cases involve suits to recover money after a car accident, the collection of money owed or stolen and rent disputes. You can bring a small claims suit as long as you are 18 years of age or older and file the necessary paperwork.

Instructions

1. Figure out the appropriate court in which to file your claim. California law requires all small claims to be filed in the superior court of the county where the defendant or person/organization you are suing resides or does business in.

2. Contact the clerk of the court to obtain the necessary paperwork needed to file your claim. At a minimum, you will need a "plaintiff's claim and order to go to small claims court" (SC-100) form. Some courts will also require additional paperwork.

3. Fill in the SC-100 and other other required paperwork completely. File the forms and any required filing fee with the court clerk. The clerk will review your application and give you a notice for a court hearing with the date and time of your hearing.

4. Serve a copy of your SC-100 and the notice for court hearing on the defendant(s). This cannot be done by you or any party to the claim. You must either: have any adult 18 years or older and not party to your claim deliver it; have a "process server" deliver it; or have the county sheriff deliver it. If you decide to use the sheriff, ask the court clerk for assistance. Whatever method you use to deliver the documents, the person who delivered it must show proof that it was delivered. This can be done by having him complete a "proof of service" form which are available from the court clerk.

5. Prepare for your hearing. Gather any evidence, pictures or documents that will be helpful in proving your cases. Interview any witnesses that were present and inform them of that exact date and time of the hearing.

6. Attend the hearing. At the hearing, the judge will allow each side to present his side of the story using any evidence or witnesses that you provide. After the hearing, the judge will make a decision either for or against your claim.

Dog Rescue Gifts

Rescue a dog from an organization and give him as a gift to a friend who loves dogs.

If you have a friend who loves dogs, then consider giving him a rescue dog as a gift. If your friend already has a rescue dog, then consider giving him dog accessories that will help the dog make a happy transition into a new home. Also consider gifts that support the caring services of dog rescue organizations. There is a wide variety of useful and novelty items that you can buy to fit the occasion.

Welcome Home Doggie Basket

Assemble a "Welcome Home Doggie" gift basket for a new rescue dog that is coming into your friend's home. Consider purchasing a soft dog bed and blanket, a box of dog biscuits, and several rubber or fabric chew toys. If the dog is timid--as many rescue dogs can be because they come from environments in which they were mistreated--he will need all of the love and patience he can get. Fill your gift basket with items that will make the dog feel comforted and secure.

Rescue Dog Calendar

Purchase a wall calendar that features photos of dogs that have been rescued. You can check with local rescue organizations or national organizations that you can locate online. Your friend will be able to see a new face of a rescue dog each month. A rescue dog calendar makes a great gift because your friend will be able to use it to write down important events and reminders and reflect on the value of protecting vulnerable dogs in her community.

Adopt a Dog

If you know your friend wants to adopt a rescue dog, then go ahead and start the process as a gift. Adopting a rescue dog requires a process in which an organization must verify that the adoptive parent will be a caring parent and can afford the dog's shots. You can start the process by picking out a dog, and paying for the adoption fee and the required shots. Your friend simply will need to be interviewed and approved.

Locate A Fox Breeder

You have decided you want a pet fox. You have done all the research and know that it is legal to own a pet fox in your city and state. You have a vet who can treat your new pet all lined up. Now you just need to buy the pet. Your next order of business is to locate a fox breeder. Fox breeders are few and far between. They need a special license for exotic pets, a large plot of land on which their animals live, and a lot of time to devote to the breeding of foxes.

Instructions

Locate a Fox Breeder

1. Speak to other fox owners that you may have met when researching the possibility of owning such a pet. Find out from whom they purchased their foxes. Word-of-mouth communication and networking may be the best way to locate a fox breeder.

2. Ask your vet if he knows of any exotic animals breeders. Veterinarians, like human doctors, often practice in a different part of the country from where they grew up and studied. Your vet may be a valuable source of information for this task.

3. Contact area zoos and determine if they maintain a list of recommended breeders. Although zoos recreate natural habitats for their animals to live in, they may be aware of ways to purchase wild animals for domestic use.

4. Call or write the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) (see Resources below). This agency governs the health requirements of animals entering the United States. They may have information on animal breeders due to their involvement with the health of such animals.

5. Make a list of all the fox breeders you have found through various channels. Contact each of them to find out wait-list times, prices and how far they are located from your home. This information will help you decide which fox breeder will be the right fit for you.

Texas Laws On Adoption

Overview of Texas adoption laws

Texas laws on adoption are codified in Chapter 162 of the Texas Family Code. Provisions of the Texas Family Code establish the procedures and requirements associated with adopting in the Lone Star State. Strict adherence to the provisions of the Texas Family Code pertaining to adoption is required by the courts of the state.

Residency Requirement

The Texas Family Code establishes a general residency requirement for an individual or couple who desires to adopt a child. The law requires that the child must reside with the prospective adoptive parent or parents for at least six months prior to the time the court approves the actual adoption. A petitioner or petitioners seeking to adopt a child can request a waiver of the residency requirement. A court can grant a waiver if in the best interests of the child, according to the Texas Family Code, Chapter 162--Section 009.

Termination of Birth Parents' Rights

There are two avenues available to terminate the parental rights of birth parents to permit a child to be adopted. First, the birth parents can execute voluntary consent forms to relinquish their parental rights. Second, a court can terminate the parental rights of birth parents. A court has authority to terminate the rights of birth parents who abandoned, neglected, or abused a child. In such instances, the birth parents were given a chance at reintegration with their child, but they failed at that process. Another related scenario involves a birth mother who voluntarily relinquishes her rights while the birth father is out of the picture, not having provided any support for the mother during the term of the pregnancy.

Consent of Child

Pursuant to the Texas Family Code, a child age 12 or older must give his or her consent to an adoption. The consent must be made in writing and presented to the court as part of the adoption proceedings. A court has discretion to waive this requirement if a judge deems forgoing consent is in the best interests of the child. For example, a child who lacks the mental capacity to understand the concept of consent to an adoption is not required to attempt such a legal affirmation. If necessary, the court can appoint a guardian ad litem (special attorney) to represent the interests of a child in such circumstances.

Legal Assistance

Adoption cases are complex legal matters. While contemplating an adoption, seriously consider engaging the services of an experienced attorney to represent your interests. The State Bar of Texas maintains a directory of attorneys in different practice areas, including adoption law. Contact the organization at:

Grants For Spay & Neuter Clinics

Spay/neuter clinics help prevent unwanted pet births.

Each year, millions of unwanted animals are euthanized in animal shelters across the country. Countless others live on the streets or are abandoned. Spaying and neutering dogs and cats helps make a dent in this unwanted pet overpopulation problem. Clinics specializing in pet sterilization may apply for grants for equipment, start-up costs, and renovation from organizations recognizing the importance of this work.

DJ & T Foundation

This foundation grants funds to establish on-site or mobile spay/neuter clinics for 501 (c) 3 organizations. However, it will not fund purchases of recreational vehicle-type units. Among the eligible uses for clinic grants is purchase of surgical equipment, cages for large and medium dogs and existing facilities renovation. Feline-specific equipment is not eligible for funding. The DJ & T Foundation was created by TV game-show host and animal advocate Bob Barker.

PetSmart Charities

PetSmart Charities funds equipment for new or existing high-volume spay/neuter clinics, but eligible clinics must do a minimum of 75 percent of their sterilizations on owned or feral animals. The rest of the sterilizations may be done on shelter cats and dogs or pets maintained or fostered by the applying organization. Only those clinics spaying or neutering at least 5,000 animals annually may apply for grants. PetSmart Charities recommends that those applying for funds operate in a community with approximately 250,000 people in a 60-mile radius.

ASPCA

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals provides grants for spay/neuter clinics, but limits the award to $3,000 or less as of 2010. The ASPCA only funds high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter clinics. To apply, organizations should submit their federal tax identification number along with a letter of inquiry. After reviewing the letter of inquiry, the ASPCA may invite eligible applicants to submit a formal request for funding. Due to the high volume of requests, organizations are usually not considered for more than one grant during the year-long grant cycle. Funding for 2010 is completed, and parameters for 2011 grant funding may be subject to change.

PETCO Foundation

The charitable division of this pet store company funds capital grants for spay/neuter clinics submitted by registered 501(c)3 organizations. Rather than operating or program expenses, this grant funds new buildings or renovation of existing properties, equipment and vehicles. Each year, the PETCO Foundation hosts a Spay/Neuter fundraiser for this grant and others benefiting animal welfare.

Homeless Shelter Work

Services

A shelter sets up an umbrella of services for clients. Because the needs of clients are so varied, a homeless shelter must do more than serve hot meals and offer people a place to sleep. It should also offer a range of social services aimed at getting homeless patrons a more permanent living situation, employment assistance, trauma counseling, drug/alcohol rehabilitation and just about anything else that falls under the social services category. The idea is to offer those that would like it access to a way out of being homeless, and for those that are not yet ready to take that step, a warm, safe place to sleep, eat and commune with others.

Partners

A homeless shelter should find ways to reach out to the homeless population in any given city. Because homelessness is never just concentrated in any one area of a community, a shelter works closely with social service agencies to identify people in need of help. From local hospitals, which give homeless patients a ride to the shelter to social workers that offer the shelter as an option for clients, sleeping on park benches, a homeless shelter employs a battery of volunteers and trained professionals to reach out to homeless people in the community, no matter their location.

Charitable Contributions

Charitable contributions, fund raising and grant opportunities are what keep most homeless shelters afloat. While city governments run many shelters as a part of the social services agency, there is never enough in the way of resources to cover the needs of homeless citizens. Therefore, many shelters participate in community events to raise money for additional resources to effectively serve the homeless population in the best way possible.

The Difference Between A Monkey & A Chimp

Chimpanzees are one type of primate.

Monkeys and chimpanzees are two types of intelligent primates that share many biological similarities with humans. Although monkeys and chimpanzees have related characteristics, such as opposable thumbs, they are classified in different families of the animal kingdom.

Classification

Chimpanzees are classified as nonhuman apes, and are located just above monkeys in the animal hierarchy. Chimpanzees are considered one of the "great apes," a group that is closely related to humans in terms of biology and social behavior.

Physical Characteristics

Physical characteristics distinguish monkeys from chimpanzees.

Monkeys have tails and hairy faces, and are typically smaller than chimpanzees. Chimpanzees have broader chests and arms that are disproportionately long.

Movement

Most monkeys are strictly quadrupeds and walk on four limbs, while chimpanzees are capable of bipedal motion, or standing upright, without using a tail for support.

Intelligence

Chimpanzees have exhibited a higher level of intelligence than monkeys. Chimpanzees are capable of mastering more complex forms of communication, such as American Sign Language. They also display resourcefulness in creating tools and methods to obtain food and complete other tasks.

Interaction

Monkeys and chimpanzees both resemble humans in their emotional behavior, but chimpanzees demonstrate more complex social behaviors, using actions like kissing and tickling to communicate.

Bichon Frise Care Sheet

There are short and long hair styles for a bichon frise dog.

A bichon frise dog is a small, white dog that has curly hair; it is also hypoallergenic and is not known to shed. A bichon frise weighs about 7 to 11 lbs. The undercoat is thick and coarse while the other coat is coarser and curlier. A bichon frise is an ideal dog for families, those living in apartments or senior living. The dog has a delightful spirit and a non-pure bread dog is often bread with a poodle, Maltese or terrier.

Bathing

Regular bathing but not over bathing is important for a bichon frise. Some bichon frise dogs may not love the bath but regular bathing and introducing the bath when they are puppies will make bath time a much more enjoyable experience for owner and dog. Use a dog-specific shampoo and if possible, use a shampoo for dogs that have the same double-layered coat as a bichon.

Brushing

Regular brushing, in between grooming sessions, is part of the care of this breed. Brush weekly when the dog is groomed regularly; check for fleas, ticks and other issues the brushing session. Again, sensitize the bichon to brushing by beginning regular brushing sessions early in life.

Nails and Anal Glands

The hair and skin aren`t the only aspects of grooming required for regular care of a bichon frise. Regularly check your dog's nails and trim them to avoid ingrown toenails. Bring any ingrown toenails to your vet for proper care; this reduces the chance of infection. The anal glands of your bichon frise also need to be suppressed.

Additional Care Tips

The bichon frise is a white dog that is prone to eye and mouth staining. This stain is also seen in other white dogs such as a Maltese, poodle or West Highland terrier. Use a vet-approved tear stain remover and wash your dog's face regularly; take care when cleaning near the eyes. Regular grooming will also trim away stained fur.

Travel With A German Shepherd

Travel With a German Shepherd

Traveling can be difficult for even the most seasoned adventurer. Packing bags, planning a route and following directions if a challenge when traveling alone, but it can be even tougher when you take along a canine companion. Large breeds such as the German Shepherd Dog take up more space and require more materials than a smaller breed, but they can be a joy to travel with. Taking a journey with your German Shepherd is an experience that can provide you with a lifetime of cherished memories.

Instructions

1. Prepare an emergency kit for your dog before you hit the road. Your emergency kit should include any prescribed medications, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol wipes, gauze, medical tape, scissors, an emergency blanket, and your vet’s contact information. Carry this in your car at all times since you never know when you will need it.

2. Schedule an appointment with your vet to have your dog examined. Your dog will need to be current on her vaccinations and healthy prior to the start of your journey. Take a copy of your dog’s medical records along with you in case of any incidences during your trip.

3. Secure your dog’s crate in the vehicle before departing. You should put her bed in there as a familiar and comfortable place to rest during your trip. Make sure the crate fits tightly or that you tie it down to avoid shifting while driving.

4. Place your dog’s collar and lead on her before allowing her into the car. This will make it easier to move her and will allow you an easier time catching her in case of any accidents.

5. Put your dog in the kennel and give him a few of his favorite toys to play with along the way. Make sure the door is securely locked so that the dog cannot escape during the trip.

6. Stop every two or three hours and allow your German Shepherd to stretch his legs and use the bathroom. You can give him a few drinks of water along the way, but avoid heavy meals as many dogs get carsick after eating.

7. Allow your dog time to play and rest at the end of each travel day. Feed him a normal meal once you have settled down for the night and give him access to water while you are stopped. It is stressful on your dog to be moved from place to place, but keeping his routine as close to normal as possible will avoid too much trouble.

8. Keep a close eye on your German Shepherd during all legs of your trip. A well-supervised dog is a much better guest than one who is allowed to roam at will. Make sure that your dog is kept under control at all times and you should have a very enjoyable trip with your German Shepherd Dog.

Gall Bladder Surgery In A Dog

Cocker spaniels are at an increased risk for gall bladder problems.

Dogs and humans have many health issues in common. Like humans, dogs develop problems with their gall bladders that require the removal of the organ.

Gall Bladder

A dog's gall bladder stores bile, releasing it when the dog eats to help it digest its food. The gall bladder can develop stones or become inflamed.

Significance

Cocker spaniels, poodles and Shetland sheepdogs are at an increased risk for developing serious gall bladder problems, according to "The Complete Healthy Dog Handbook."

Surgery

During gall bladder surgery on a dog, a veterinary surgeon removes the entire gall bladder. This prevents recurring problems and eliminates the risk of pancreatitis in the future.

Aftercare

After undergoing gall bladder surgery, a dog should be confined while it recovers to avoid the risk of rupturing stitches. The veterinarian might prescribe antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.

Considerations

For dogs at a high risk for gall bladder problems, a yearly blood test can help a veterinarian determine when surgery is necessary.

Donate Shampoo To Homeless Shelters

Many homeless people are forced to go without personal care items.

Few things are more rewarding or satisfying than donating personal care items to needy individuals living in homeless shelters. According to Charity Guide, homeless people often find it very difficult to acquire basic items such as soap, shampoo, deodorant and toothbrushes. (See References 1) Make a positive impact on a needy person today by donating toiletries to reputable, trustworthy homeless shelters.

Instructions

1. Locate a homeless shelter to donate your shampoo to. You can find a homeless shelter by visiting the Homeless Shelter Directory website online. Under the "Search Homeless Shelters by City" header, enter your city name and choose your state from the drop-down box listed below. Click the "Get Shelters" button to find homeless shelters near you.

2. Contact the homeless shelter to determine whether or not the facility is accepting shampoo donations and has enough storage space for the shampoo. According to Charity Guide, shelters may have specific requirements for donations or may have suggestions for items to include.

3. Gather all the shampoo and gently wipe each shampoo bottle clean with a damp cloth. If the shampoo has been previously used, clean the area around the cap thoroughly. Twist the cap tight to prevent leakage during delivery.

4. Carefully place the shampoo bottles in a secure, sturdy box. Prevent spillage or damage to the shampoo bottles during transportation by using bubble wrap to fill in any extra space in the box.

5. Drop the shampoo off at the homeless shelter or ship it to the shelter by mail. Contact the facility to determine the best time to drop off the shampoo. If you're mailing the shampoo to the homeless shelter, write the facility's official address on the box and ship it accordingly.

Create A Day Calendar

You can make your own customized day planner.

A custom day planner is a useful tool to keep yourself organized. There are many daily and weekly calendars you can purchase, but maybe you want to design the layout yourself, or maybe you just want to save some money. You also can make a special day planner as a gift for a friend or relative and add important dates you know she will not want to forget.

Instructions

1. Decide the size of your calendar. If you are going to print it yourself, the easiest way is to choose a page size that can be easily made from standard-sized paper. For example, you could make a large-format day calendar with pages that are 8-1/2 x 11 inches, or you could make one with pages half that size by printing two pages on one sheet of paper and cutting the sheet in half. Consider what size would be convenient for you to use and how you will print it at that size when making your decision.

2. Design your pages. The easiest way to make a day planner is to design a two-page spread with blanks for you to write in the date. That way each page is the same. You can choose whether each page is a day or a week. You can add special areas for a to-do list, a daily menu or a grocery list, as well as places for appointments. If you don't want to design a page, you can download templates and print them (see Resources).

3. Print your pages. The best option is to print them on the front and back of the paper. Doing this will require a bit of planning, since most home printers don't print on both sides of the paper. Print a stack of pages on one side, then flip them over, put them back in the paper tray and print on the reverse side. Or make a master on your printer and take it to a copy center where you can photocopy them as double-sided copies. Use colored paper for an extra touch.

4. Cut the pages, if necessary. Use the markings on a paper cutter to make sure to cut all of the pages the same size. Or find a local printing shop with a professional paper cutter that can cut a thick stack of paper at one time and pay them to cut it.

5. Punch holes in the pages and put the pages in a three-ring binder. Or bind the pages with comb binding or similar binding. Office supply stores sell home binding equipment, or you can take the calendar to a local print shop where they can bind it for a small fee. You may want to choose an extra thick cardstock for the cover.

Checklist For Stepparent Adoption In Texas

Texas stepparents must formally adopt stepchildren before they have the right to make decisions for them.

Stepparents in Texas must formally adopt their new spouse's children if they want the right to make decisions for and custody over the children. Stepparents, both the child's birth parents and in some cases the child himself are all involved in the adoption process.

Termination of Other Birth Parent's Rights

If both of a child's birth parents are alive, the other birth parent must agree to terminate her rights before the Texas courts will allow you to adopt your step-child. If the non-custodial parent is not involved with his child's life, he may be willing to sign a statement agreeing to terminate his rights so that you can adopt the child. However, the biological parent has the right to refuse your request. If this happens, you and your spouse must take the other biological parent to court and petition it to strip her of her rights. Texas courts can only grant your petition if you can prove that the non-custodial parent does not have an ongoing relationship with the child or a plan to establish one.

Consent from Your Step-Child

If your spouse's child is older than 12, he must consent to the adoption before you can move forward with your petition. Usually he does this by providing a written, signed statement agreeing to the adoption. If the child refuses to consent to the adoption, you can go to court to try to compel him to consent. As with birth parents, most Texas courts are reluctant to supersede a teenager's refusal to consent. You would have to prove it is in the child's best interest for the adoption to proceed anyway.

Joint Petition

Texas law requires that you and your spouse file a joint petition for adoption. You cannot adopt your step-child without the consent and participation of your spouse.

Court Visit

You and your spouse must file the petition and supporting paperwork with the clerk of the juvenile court in the county where you live. If the child currently lives in a different county, you must file your petition for adoption in that county. The court will finalize the adoption and issue a decree stating that you have rights of custody and the right to make medical and educational decisions for the child.

Colorado Laws About Transferring Car Titles

When you move to Colorado, you have 90 days to retitle your car.

In Colorado, the State Department of Revenue makes the rules about title your vehicle, but titles are recorded in each of the state's 64 counties. That means you follow Colorado state laws and fill out Colorado state forms but take them to the county clerk's office to get your Colorado state plates.

If you're buying from a dealership, the dealer will handle the paperwork for you. You'll get a temporary license plate, and the county motor vehicle office will let you know by mail when your documents are ready. For private sales, if you're moving to Colorado, or changing the title because of a life change, Colorado law requires you to bring various documents to your county motor vehicle authority and pay title and registration fees, ownership tax and sales tax.

Record Your Title With the County

Colorado is different from many other states in that driver licensing and motor vehicle ownership laws are overseen by the state Department of Revenue, but the county registers and titles vehicles. You must go in person to the correct county office, and that's not always easy to figure out---some Denver suburbs include addresses in three counties. Call the clerk and recorder's office, or visit the U.S. Postal Service's website, enter your street address and city, and click "submit." On the results page, click "Mailing Industry Information" to see your county name.

This law also requires that both you and the vehicle be in the state of Colorado at the time of registration. When you move, update your motor vehicle registration so it comes to the right address and ownership taxes (the Colorado version of personal property tax) are collected on behalf of the city and county where you live.

Laws That Protect Buyers and Sellers

To transfer title in Colorado, you must prove who you are, show that the vehicle is legally yours to sell, and provide details of the sale such as cost (to figure sales tax). You'll also need:

1) Secure and verifiable identification for yourself (driver's license or permit, passport, immigration documents, military ID)

2) The current title or documents from the dealer, properly endorsed by the previous owner. On a Colorado title, the previous owner should fill out the form on the back, sign and date. If there's more than one owner, all must sign.

3) Proof the vehicle passed a Colorado vehicle emissions test, if you live in metro Denver, Weld, Larimer or El Paso counties. No other inspection is required by law.

4) Odometer disclosure

5) A bill of sale, or a signed and dated gift letter if somebody gave you the car. What goes on a bill of sale: buyer's name(s), purchase price, vehicle identification number, year and make of the vehicle, date of sale and the seller's signature.

Proof of Insurance, VIN Number and Lien Details

Colorado law requires proof of insurance before registering a vehicle. Bring your insurance card, a copy of your policy or a letter from your insurance company confirming coverage.

If you borrowed money to buy the vehicle, a lien will be recorded with the title until your loan is paid off. Your lender should give you a mortgage document (security agreement). It must be an original, carbon copy or certified copy and must contain vehicle description (year, make, vehicle identification number), lienholder's name and address, loan amount and owner's signature.

If the vehicle was titled in another state, you'll need a Verification of Vehicle Identification Number form (download it from the Department of Revenue website), completed by a Colorado law enforcement officer, motor vehicle dealer or emissions testing station.

Special Situations

In case of death or divorce, if there's no current title document, or in special situations such as salvage or rebuild titles or unusual vehicles like road machinery or manufactured homes, Colorado law may require you to provide extra paperwork such as a death certificate or power of attorney, or go through additional steps. Contact the Colorado Department of Revenue or your county clerk for advice.

Merchandise Return Laws In Florida

Receiving a refund in Florida is not always mandatory.

The state of Florida does not have any laws that force merchants to accept a return of a purchased item. However, the state does require merchants to post a notice in the store regarding their "no returns accepted" policy. Without such a notice, consumers have the right to make a return within certain guidelines. Florida has special rules mandating a consumer's right to a refund for a home solicitation sale.

No Automatic Returns

Florida does not mandate that merchants have to take returns of merchandise purchased from them. The law does require that if a merchant does not want to accept returns, then he must post a clear and conspicuous notice to that effect in the store. Such a notice must be clear and placed by the cash register. Failure to follow these provisions will then create a presumed right of the consumer to return merchandise purchased at that store.

Merchandise Return Guidelines

Without the required no returns/no refunds sign, then a presumed return/refund policy shall exist with that merchant. The merchant must give the details of the policy to the consumer in writing upon request. The most conservative return policy allowed by state law is a right of refund within seven days of the purchase. The consumer must bring the merchandise back to the merchant and provide a purchase receipt. The law allows the merchant to adopt a more liberal return policy if they wish.

Restrictions

The law requiring merchandise returns applies to all merchants in Florida. However, certain types of merchandise are exempt. Exempted items include those that are perishable, all food items, merchandise altered by the consumer, goods that are custom made and goods legally restricted from selling again, such as prescription medicine. All goods returned need to be unused and in the original packaging. These laws are applicable to retail merchants in Florida who sell to the general public.

Home Solicitation Sales

Florida has a special provision for home solicitation sales. Such a sale is one that took place not at the seller's place of business. Typically this is in the consumer's home, but could also be at the consumer's workplace, at a convention, fair or other location. The state law imposes a three day right for the consumer to cancel such a transaction and receive a refund of any monies paid. The refund must be for over $25 and the consumer must request it in writing within three business days of the purchase. The consumer must receive the refund within 10 days of the request.

Farm With Draft Horses

Draft horses can replace tractors for some farm chores, but unlike a tractor, they require daily care and feed.

Using draft horses can be appropriate when the amount of land being farmed is small and the horses are able to physically handle the amount of work required of them. While a conditioned draft horse is extremely strong no matter what breed it is, as with any working animal, it must be given plenty of breaks and should be limited in the amount of work that it is required to do on a daily basis.

Instructions

1. Train the draft horses to pull the equipment. Introduce the horse to each implement gradually so that it can become accustomed to the new noises being pulled behind. If not introduced properly, there is a greater chance that the draft horse may spook and run away. At the same time, condition the horse so that it is physically prepared for the tasking work. It will help if the horse has previously been trained as a driving horse.

2. Modify farm machinery so that it can be hooked up to the horse's harness. If it cannot be modified, purchase appropriate implements. Simple machinery that can be pulled on wheels, dragged or works on a ground-drive system can be used to farm with draft horses. But implements requiring power takeoff, hydraulics or electric will not work. Some types of machinery that may work include harrows, plows, ground-driven manure spreaders, sickle mowers and cultivators.

3. Hitch up the draft horses and hook the farming implement you need to their harness. Holding the reins, walk behind the horses and the implements, and direct the horse's path along the piece of land being farmed. Provide the horses with food and water at regular intervals every few hours, increasing the frequency of stops during hotter parts of the day.

How Old Do You Have To Be To Open A Savings Account

It's never too early to start saving. However, for the first 18 to 21 years of a person's life -- depending on the state in which he lives -- it's too early for him to open a savings account in his own name. Although the minimum age at which a person can open his own savings account varies by state, federal law forbids all minors from holding private savings or checking accounts.

Minors

According to U.S. law, by 18, a person can legally sign contracts by himself . Before that, the person is considered a minor and cannot sign legally binding contracts without the assistance of a legal guardian. The opening of a savings account, in which a person can deposit money and allow it to earn interest, requires signing a contract; therefore, a person cannot legally open a savings account while a minor.

State Law

Although the age at which a person can sign contracts -- known as "the age of majority" -- is 18 in most states, in a few states the age is higher. In Alabama and Nebraska, the age is 19, while in Indiana, Mississippi, and New York, it is 21. A person can only open a savings account in these states when they have reached the legal age of majority.

Custodial Accounts

A person under the age of majority can open a custodial account overseen by a guardian, who pledges to manage the account in the child's best interest. Under a federal law known as the Uniform Gift to Minors Act, a custodian will control an account for a child and hold it in trust until the child reaches an age in which he can legally take control of the account.

Trust Transfer

Curiously, the age at which a person can legally sign contracts in a state does not always precisely match up to the age in which a custodial account will be turned over to him. In all states, the age at which a custodial account can be transferred is 18 or 21. Even if this age of transfer exceeds the age at which a person can sign contracts, the person must still wait until the age of transfer to take control of the account.
