Start A Small Pet Store At A Flea Market

A pet store at a flea market would work best in a shady location to keep the animals cool.

Pet businesses bring in billions of dollars per year. Setting up a pet store might seem like a good idea, but you generally need a large amount of capital to get you started. Setting up a small pet business at a flea market, however, should not require a major investment, though you should take special care to find a safe location for the animals. Since people go to flea markets for cheap or unusual items, keep that in mind when deciding what to sell.

Instructions

1. Contact your local Chamber of Commerce to find out about local regulations. Some cities don't allow the sale of live animals on the street or without the proper permits. If you plan on only selling pet food, toys and accessories, you might just need the same permit as other vendors in the market.

2. Visit the flea market when it's at its peak. Look for places where you can set up your business and keep the animals safe. You need an area with shade and away from the main traffic if you plan on having animals there.

3. Talk to other vendors at the flea market to ask for contact information. They should be able to tell you who runs that specific market. You will need to contact the organizers to rent a table or space.

4. Make a list of products you want to sell. Since you want to keep the business small, it might make more sense to focus on one specific type of product, rather than selling a bit of everything. For example, you could sell just cages and carriers or you could focus on pet food. To set yourself apart, look for unique items, such as natural remedies or organic treats.

5. Change your stock throughout the year. Flea and tick medication sells better during spring and toys might sell better during the holidays. Visit a local pet store and see what items they're displaying prominently. Those are usually the ones that are selling at the moment. Use that as a guide for what you can sell from the flea market table.
