People with allergies may not be affected by a chinchilla but may have allergic reactions from the supplies to feed and care for these animals. Hay is an essential part of a chinchilla's diet. Timothy and alfalfa hays are the best for these pets but may cause hay fever in an allergic owner. A chinchilla's bedding may also cause an allergic reaction. Owners unwilling to provide good hay and quality bedding for their chinchilla because of allergic reactions should not keep these pets.
Dust Baths
Chinchillas have a luxurious coat, but they don't keep it clean by bathing in water. Instead, chinchillas take dust baths. In the wild, these animals coat themselves in volcanic ash. Pet chinchillas must be provided with a special dust in which to bathe about twice a week. This dust could cause a reaction in allergy sufferers. Not allowing a chinchilla to have its dust bath is cruel and inhumane, as the dust keeps the chinchilla clean and helps manage the coat.
Making the Right Choice
People who are already susceptible to allergic reactions caused by animals may also find that their symptoms worsen the longer they are exposed to their pet. Therefore, people with severe allergies or asthma should not choose to keep a pet chinchilla. People with manageable allergies should consult with a doctor before spending time with a chinchilla or choosing one as a pet.
