Think before you adopt a pet.
Adopting a pet can be a noble thing. It saves a pet from the possibility of death (especially if it's at a high-kill shelter) and it keeps pets out of already crowded pet shelters and foster homes. But before you adopt a pet, really think about it. Many people adopt a pet for the wrong reason and don't realize all the work, or money that is involved. There are some reasons why you should not adopt a pet.
Cost
Sometimes people don't realize how much a pet will cost in the long run. Even if you get a pet for free, the cost of owning a cat over the life of 14 years can cost up to $18,000. This is due to vet bills, food, litter and pet supplies. The cost of owning a dog for 14 years can cost up to $38,000 per year due to vet bills, food and pet supplies. You don't want to adopt a pet, have it bond with you and your family, only to give it up for adoption later because you can't afford it. This might cause unnecessary stress and pain to the pet and your family.
Size of your apartment or home
While some animal breeds are suitable for a small household, others need a lot of room to run and play. For example, a big dog like a greyhound needs a lot of living space. Even if you take a dog for a walk on a regular basis, living in a small space might lead to behavioral problems in your pet.
Time
Pets require a lot of time. Pets that are up for adoption may have come from an abusive home. These types of pets will require a lot of your time and attention in order for them to start trusting you. You will need to build their self esteem and assure them by giving them lots of your love and attention. If you don't give this to your adopted pet, it might cause your pet to act out, which leads to behavioral and social problems.
