Find Information On Private Adoption In Washington State

Find information on private adoption in Washington State.

In Washington State, there are three ways to legally adopt a child: through a public, private or an independent agency. Private agencies must be licensed by the state as a nonprofit or profit organization. Parents going through a private adoption agency still have the same process for adopting a child as they would if they used a public agency. You can use the Health Services website for Washington State (DSHS) for more resources on private adoption before contacting a particular agency.

Instructions

1. Check on the Washington State Department of Health Services official website for general information and resources. They have a developmental journal in PDF form that lists the requirements, agencies, laws and considerations that go into an adoption. The website also gives a listing of adoption resources such as attorneys, counselors and support groups.

2. Call your local office to speak to someone about the adoption process in your area. They can assist you in the best steps to take to start the process. Use the DSHS Children's Administration Office online search page.

3. Call the recruitment office 800-760-5340. This recruitment service is contracted by the DSHS to provide information such as brochures and classes.

4. Take a training class. A pre-service training course is required for legal adoption in Washington State.

5. Ask your local contact to set up an approved adoptive home study. It is another requirement for adoption and will include an application, personal information, medical statements, income and criminal history checks. It also includes preparation training and education about the adoption process.
