Enhance the theme of an animal-based baby shower with games to match.
Playing games is a favorite activity for baby showers. Traditional games that fit with any theme include having guests try to determine the flavor of baby foods that are passed around and measuring the circumference of the mother-to-be's belly. If you are throwing an animal-themed baby shower, extend the theme to the games as well. Does this Spark an idea?
Baby Animals
Give each guest a list of animals and a pen. Set a timer for several minutes and ask the guests to write the name of the baby animal that goes with each. Include both easy and harder animals on your list. Most guests will know that a baby cat is called a kitten and a baby lion is a cub, for example, but how many know that a baby monkey is called an infant and a baby swan is a cygnet? Give a prize to the guest who gets the most babies correct.
Animal Gestation Periods
For this matching game, give guests a piece of paper with a list of animals down one side and the lengths of their pregnancies in days down the other. Challenge them to match the animals with the gestation periods. 266 days for a human doesn't seem so long compared to the 640 days of an elephant's gestation! The winner is the one who matches the most correctly.
How Many Animals?
This is an easy game to prepare and to play. Fill a jar with animal crackers. Count how many it takes to fill the jar. Then display the jar at the party along with small pieces of paper. Have the party-goers guess how many animal crackers are in the jar. Give a prize to the person with the closest guest. You could also fill the jar with plastic teddy bears, monkeys or another animal that goes with your shower's theme.
Famous Teddy Bears
For a teddy bear baby shower ask your guests to list as many famous bears, like Corduroy and Paddington, as they can. Set a time limit. The winner is one who names the most. This idea can be adapted to other species, too. For a safari or jungle theme have them name animals that traditionally live in jungles, like Curious George or Babar the Elephant.
