Deciding to Become a Foster Parent
Every year, hundreds of thousands of children enter the U.S. foster care system and every single one of them is in need of a family to give them a safe home for either short-term or long-term placement. Many families become foster parents with the intention of helping a child in need or hoping to adopt down the road. Potential foster parents need to determine if they have the ability to care for a child who may have a history of abuse and behavioral problems.
Determining Foster Parent Requirements
Specific steps to becoming a foster parent can vary in different states. In general, foster parents must be 21 years old, financial able to care for a foster child, have space in their home to care for a foster child, be able to pass a criminal background check, have no history of child abuse, and be able to provide a safe home that meets all licensing requirements.
Foster Parent Application
Once potential foster parents have determined that they can meet the basic requirements required by their state, they can attend a foster care orientation meeting in their local area and fill out a foster care parent application. As part of the application process, foster parents will be required to complete a home study and a medical exam.
