The distinctive red Aids awareness ribbon.
Ever since the Aids awareness ribbons were so successful at raising the profile of the issue, as well as generating funds, many organizations have followed suit and produced the simple, yet effective, symbols. Large, magnetic versions of the ribbons sell well for cars and fridges too. There are now so many different groups represented by ribbons, that one color often stands for several causes. In the animal cause category alone, there are several ribbons to choose from.
Animal Shelter
Animal Shelter.org offers two car magnet ribbons. Everything you pay is donated toward the cause, except for the cost of the shipping. The ribbon in support of animal rescue is red, covered with white paw prints, along with the word "RESCUE." The ribbon supporting spaying and neutering for domestic animals is blue with white paw prints and has "PLEASE SPAY & NEUTER" printed on it.
Opt to Adopt
Purple "Opt to Adopt" car and fridge magnets can be bought in 4-inch or 8-inch sizes through a variety of outlets, but all proceeds go to local animal shelters and rescue centers. The ribbons sport a small picture of a cat and a dog, along with the logo and paw prints.
Stop Animal Cruelty
The Love Your Pet corporation designed the "Stop Animal Cruelty" magnetic ribbons, which come in 3.8-inch and 8-inch sizes. The pale blue ribbons, which have a white outline, have one paw print on them along with the "Stop Animal Cruelty" logo and the Love Your Pet website address. The money raised helps to fund rehabilitation centers for abused animals.
Paws for Life
The Paws for Life Coalition Inc. sell two custom-made magnets. They are both 8-inches high and feature a white ribbon with black paw prints. Their "SUPPORT RESCUE" ribbon sports the logo in blue, however, and the normally hollow centre of the ribbon has a pop-out heart-shape outlined with red. Inside the heart the caption reads "Have a" above a picture of a paw, with "Save a Life" underneath that. The "PLEASE SPAY & NEUTER" logo on the other ribbon is green and the bottom of the left side of the ribbon curls up, representing a cat's tail. The pop-out center of this ribbon has a green heart with white silhouettes of a cat and a dog.
Non-affiliated Magnetic Ribbons
Not all magnetic ribbons promoting animal causes are necessarily affiliated with official organizations. These are advertised as ribbons to help you "spread awareness," or "show your support." Read the details carefully when you choose your ribbon. Perhaps you are happy simply to "show your support," but most animal lovers would want a portion of the profit, at least, to actually help a cause so close to their hearts.
