Boston is a city full of events and adventures for people of all ages. Yearly events coincide with day-to-day activities that highlight a rich history of the area. Weather ranges from mild summers to winters with large amounts of snow which limits the amount of year-round activities available.
Nightime Events
First Night Boston is held yearly on December 31. Activities such as films, music and exhibits are available for all age groups. Back Bay features artistic endeavors, while family-friendly projects are present in Hynes Convention Center. The New Year's Eve countdown occurs at several locations such as Copley Square, Boston Common and Rowe's Wharf. Mardi Grad Madness goes on each year at the end of February. Charitable organizations in the area host the event, which runs until midnight. A buffet is on hand as well as a beer and wine reception.
Sports
The Boston Marathon is one of the most famous events in the city and runs during Patriot's Day weekend. The over-26-mile course starts in Hopkinton and covers the entire city, ending in Back Bay. Wheelchair racing also became a part of the event in 1995. Head of the Charles Regatta features rowing races for one weekend each October. Saturdays are for practices, while Sunday is the actual race day. Categories range from youth-doubles to over-60 men and women. Vendors and exhibitors are also on hand with rowing-related items for sale. Spectator sports are prominently featured in the area with the New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, Boston Bruins, and New England Revolution. Games are at various times of the year, depending on the sport and league.
Tours
Tours are offered both day and night to cover a wide variety of topics. During the day, bike or trolley tours of the city allow stops at historic landmarks. The Freedom Trail takes visitors through the city to 16 different historic sites like the Boston State House and the Old North Church. At night, tours deal with the supposedly haunted aspects of Boston. Stops cover sites with claims of ghosts including The Central Burial Ground.
Boston Harbor Islands
Boston Harbor Islands are just 11 miles of the shore. Passenger ferries, shuttle boats and tour boats carry visitors to the area, which is open from May to October. Camping is on-site with advance reservations. These campsites are rustic with no modern amenities like showers or electricity.
