Grants For Cat Rescues

Find funds to help cats and kittens.

For some people, happiness is a warm kitten or cat. Unfortunately, shelters all over the country are filled with cats, many of which end up euthanized for lack of homes. Nonprofit organizations set up to rescue cats do what they can to aid homeless felines, whether by fostering and adopting out cats, preventing unwanted litters with spaying and neutering, or caring for feral cat colonies.

Petco Foundation

The foundational arm of this national pet store chain offers funding for nonprofit animal rescue groups. Available grants include the 4Rs project, which provides monies for veterinary services, spaying and neutering, feral cat Trap/Neuter/Return programs, adoptions and event sponsorships. Petco's product support program donates food, cat litter, and other materials sold in its stores to qualifying animal welfare groups. Many Petco stores hold regular adoption days with facilities for cat rescues to keep adoptable felines at the store if rescue volunteers take care of feeding and cleaning cages.

Summerlee Foundation

This Texas-based foundation's animal protection program concentrates on cats, especially "feral and free-roaming." Not limited to Texas rescues, grants are made only to 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations, and individual applicants are ineligible. Applications should include the history of the organization, proposed project, timeline and budget for the work, and the plan for completion of the project. Also include the names of all board members, curriculum vitae of those working on the project and up-to-date financial statements of the nonprofit organization.

Petsmart Charities

Petsmart Charities offers grants for the spaying and neutering of free-roaming or feral felines. It awards funding for "strategic planning and mentoring for a comprehensive trap-neuter-return (TNR)" program. Other Petsmart Charities grants include a spay/neuter program targeted at specific community demographics, where the need for such services is critical. It also offers funds for starting, expanding or equipment purchases for high-volume spay/neuter clinics, in which a minimum of 75 percent of surgeries are performed on owned companion animals.

Second Chance Fund

Administered by the American Humane Association, the Second Chance Fund helps local nonprofit animal welfare agencies, including cat rescues, pay for veterinary treatment of abused or neglected animals that may later be adopted out. Grants are limited to $2,000 per rescue per year. Funds cannot pay for routine procedures, including spaying and neutering, micro-chipping or vaccinations. Animals must have a good prognosis for recovery to qualify for funding.
