Alligators are dangerous and should not be approached.
An alligator is a powerful and dangerous reptile that can quickly overwhelm unsuspecting prey, including humans. Alligators are found in the southeastern part of the United States --- specifically Florida and Louisiana --- and extreme caution should be taken when walking near marshes, swamps and lakes. If an alligator attacks, there are several ways to escape.
Instructions
1. Maintain a cool head when being attacked by an alligator. Panicking could lead to poor decision-making which could cost you your life or a limb.
2. Observe escape routes and run directly away from the alligator. Alligators are fairly slow on land, averaging a speed of about 11 mph.
3. Attack the alligator's eyes with the thumb or hand if bitten. Gouging an eye will cause the alligator to release its grip and flee.
4. Head for land as quickly as possible, if you are in the water. Retreat to a safe distance once released.
