Toy poodles are a smaller variety of the large, standard poodles. Because poodles have hair that continues to grow until you trim it, having your toy poodle clipped routinely is important. There are several different styles of cuts you can choose for your toy poodle. Although poodles do not shed, choosing a longer cut will mean that you need to brush the hair more often.
Puppy Clip
A puppy clip is the easiest cut you can choose for your toy poodle. This haircut has the poodle's fur closely clipped all over its body. This short clip requires minimal grooming between clippings, and you also do not have to worry about the coat picking up too much dirt or debris. While you can choose this clip for a poodle of any age, it is traditionally chosen for poodles less than a year old.
Continental Clip
The continental clip is a type of cut that is commonly used on toy poodles that enter dog shows. Dogs with this clip are shaved short along their backs and hindquarters, but have long hair along their heads and fronts. This hair can be shaped to give the coat an overall balance. They have a pompom on the end of their tails and on each hip and a band of hair around each ankle.
English Saddle Clip
The English saddle clip is similar to the continental clip. These dogs have rears that are clipped to a short length, except for a curved, shaved area on each of the dog's flanks. The poodle has long hair on the front of its body and the head. They have a pompom on the tip of the tail and two shaved bands around each hind leg.
Dutch Band Clip
Choose the Dutch band clip when you live in a cool climate and want to keep the toy poodle's hair long so that it can stay warm. Dogs with this clip have medium-length fur on the fronts and backs of the body, including the legs. They have a band of fur around their middle section that is shaved close to the skin. Dogs with a Dutch band clip have shaved necks and heads, except for a puff of hair on their heads and a beard on their face.
