Grants For Nonprofit Shelters

Certain grants are aimed at nonprofit animal shelters.

Running a nonprofit animal shelter can be tough, particularly in terms of sustaining enough funds to keep the shelter operating well, while ensuring the health and well-being of as many shelter animals as possible. Fortunately, for those nonprofit animal shelters looking for some extra funds, there are nonprofit grants available. Some are government related, while others are made available through public, and even celebrity, donations.

Meachem Foundation Memorial Grant

This grant "funds capital campaigns, building improvements and equipment purchases" that pertain directly to the caring for of animals in shelters. Grants max out at $4,000, and applicants must be a supporting member of the American Humane Association, as well as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Second Chance Fund

This grant is designed to aid animals that were abused or neglected. The fund awards grants to animal welfare groups, including nonprofit animal shelters and rescue organizations, for the temporary care of these abused animals, with the long-term goal being adoption into a caring home. Funding is limited to $2,000 per year.

PETCO Foundation Grant

Tailored to licensed and operating nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, this grant not only encompasses cash, but also products used in shelters, such as muzzles, leashes and bowls. Organizations can apply for food assistance as well, in order to help feed sheltered animals.

Animal Assistance Foundation

This grant is designed exclusively for 501(c)(3) organizations in Colorado or those directly catering to Colorado pet owners. These grants are primarily allocated to those animal shelters that "demonstrate new approaches to animal care and the understanding of the important of animals." Grants are also determined by accessibility to care, quality of care and self-sufficiency of those animal shelters considered for the grant.

Animal Welfare Trust

The Animal Welfare Trust is "devoted to promoting the well-being of the animal community." Grants are offered primarily to organizations who aim to reduce animal suffering and cruelty through their work in the community. Others considered for grants are those organizations who help raise awareness in their respective communities regarding animal abuse, neglect and cruelty.
