All dogs shed, at least a little.
A completely hypoallergenic, non-shedding dog does not exist; all dogs will shed hair at some point, even if only a minimal amount. If you want to own a dog, but you have pet allergies, choose from a few specific dog breeds that shed less than others. You can also employ ways to minimize your dog's shedding as well as hygienic practices to help reduce the amount of hair around your household.
Grooming
Brush your pooch once a week and dispose of the excess fur, as brushing your dog in a controlled area will eliminate the majority of the fur around the house. Specific brushes work best with specific breeds of dogs. Talk with your veterinarian or your groomer to see which brush is best for your dog. In addition, you should bathe your dog regularly. Have your dog groomed professionally on a regular basis if it has longer fur.
Health
The mental and physical health of your dog can cause it to shed; experiencing stress and discomfort can cause shedding. In addition, malnutrition and chronic illness can cause your dog to shed. Keep your dog healthy and in a safe environment to eliminate unnecessary shedding. Parasites, sunburns, allergies and pregnancy can also cause shedding in your pet.
Cleaning
Put slipcovers on your furniture that are easy to remove and wash, and wash your dog's bedding weekly. Sweep and vacuum your home on a regular basis. If your dog gets wet, dry it off thoroughly and brush it before you bring it back into your home. Use a tape or lint roller anywhere in the home that you find pet hair; prepare to roll more often during the dog's shedding season, which is typically as the weather begins to warm.
Breeds
Look for dogs that shed a minimal amount, including breeds such as: the Affenpinscher, Bedlington Terrier, Bergamasco, Bichon Frise, Bolognese, Brussels Griffon, Chinese Crested, Chinese, Shar-Pei, Coton De Tulear, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Giant Schnauzer, Havanese and the Irish Water Spaniel. Additional breeds include: the Lakeland Terrier, Maltese, Miniature Schnauzer, Polish Lowland Sheepdog, Poodle, Portuguese Water Dog, Puli Pumi, Shih Tzu, Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier, Toy Poodle Welsh Terrier and the Yorkshire Terrier. Ask your veterinarian or breeder about hybrid dogs, mixtures of two or more breeds, that don't shed a lot. Beware of double-coated dogs that can shed more than once a year.
