Fundraising Carnival Ideas

Carnivals are a great way to get a community to support your organization. Families enjoy attending carnivals because they can be a day of fun for children as well as a way to support a good cause. The keys to a successful carnival are an attention-getting attraction, good food and entertainment and effective marketing.

Attractions

Depending on the carnival's location and permit requirements, attractions can range from homemade games, like ring toss, to rides. Plush prizes and toys will attract young children, but a raffle or silent auction can attract people with or without kids. Ask local businesses to donate items for the raffle or auction. But be sure to get the proper permits and insurance before the carnival starts.

Food

Have plenty of water and other liquids on hand. People get hot and thirsty at summer carnivals. A variety of food choices also is important. Barbecue and corn are always popular. Think about having healthier options like salads or wraps. Or stick to staples like hamburgers, hot dogs, snow cones, popcorn and cotton candy. Ask local restaurants if they're interested in setting up a booth at the event. Some successful carnivals foods from around the world. A beer tent can be a huge money-maker, if you can get a permit to sell alcohol.

Entertainment

Make sure there is ample space to sit down and eat food. Ask local glee clubs or entertainers to perform. The longer people stay, the more money they will spend. Get a local comedian to emcee the event.

Marketing

Use banners and street flags, plus newspaper and community association newsletters, to advertise the carnival. Offer discounts for people who buy their early. Consider a ride bracelet that allows children to ride as much as they want.
