Problems Raised In Animal Shelters

Many unwanted pets end up in animal shelters.

Animal shelters are made so that there is a safe place for an animal to go when it is not wanted. They were created with the best intentions. Unfortunately there are many problems with shelters. Some of these come from the very ideology of the shelter while others stem from illness and overcrowding.

No-Kill

No-Kill shelters may sound like a great idea although the very nature of the shelter poses many problems for the animals involved. A no-kill shelter will not euthanize the animals in its care, including ones that may need it. Animals that are ill and dying and ones that are too violent to be adopted will be kept alive. The shelters will also not take more animals than it can handle which leaves unadoptable or dying animals taking the place of ones that need to be adopted and taken away from dangerous situations.

Illness

Illness is a big issue in animal shelters. When one animal gets sick it can be very difficult to contain the illness and it will spread. Because of this animals who are sick often end up dying so that they do not infect the entire facility. Illness would be more treatable if the shelters had better funding and more space for the many animals that they house.

Overcrowding

Overcrowding is a problem in almost every animal shelter. It is due to overcrowding that a lot of other issue start. Overcrowding causes the easy spread of illness, makes shelters turn away animals and causes a great deal of animal abuse. When there is not enough space, many shelters will put animals into storage for long periods of time, confining them to small areas where they will have a low quality of life and become depressed and hostile.

Proper Care

Being able to give each animal the proper care that it deserves and needs is a problem in animal shelters, as there is often not enough space or staff to care for the animals properly. The animals are not attended to so illness can go unnoticed, malnutrition can spread and unacceptable living conditions prevail. When there is not enough staff to properly care for animals they get scared and turn aggressive or depressed. This in turn makes it so that they are unable to get adopted and ultimately die in the shelter.
