Haiti Medical Schools & Training

Haiti Medical Schools & Training

Medical schools in Haiti conduct classes primarily in French, with one exception. Burnett International University School of Medicine was founded in 2002 as the only medical school in Haiti to offer training for doctors and nurses in the English language. The other private universities offering medical training in Haiti are the University of Notre Dame, Haiti, UNDH, Quisqueya University and King Henry Cristophe.

Geography

Located in Tabarre, Haiti, Burnett International University School of Medicine and Health Sciences was founded by a Haitian priest and a Haitian physician who were both educated in the United States. They chose to have the facility in Haiti because of the need for international medical training in English. The UNDH, Quisqueya University and the State University of Haiti offer medical courses in Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital. King Henry Cristophe is located in Cap-Haitian.

Types

Burnett is an international school with a curriculum consistent with the medical schools in the United States. Burnett offers a four-year medical graduate program intended to prepare graduates to successfully pass the United States Medical Licensure Exams (USMLE). The University of Notre Dame Haiti is a private Catholic university established by the Episcopal Conference of Haiti. According to the UNDH website, "the UNDH is not just about academic degrees, it is mainly the formation of a new type of Haiti, which includes in its culture and moral values of the Gospel, essential for serious and honest people that the country needs today." The other two private schools offering medical degrees are Quisqueya and King Henry Christophe. The State University of Haiti is a public school.

Tuition

Burnett University's medical program is divided into two parts, Basic Sciences and Clinical Rotations. Basic Science tuition about $5,000 per semester, and the tuition for the Clinical Rotations is about $6,000 per semester. UNDH tuition is around $4,500, each year according to the Health Education and Leadership Program, HELP. Tuition information for the other schools is not readily available; prospective students must contact the universities to get further information (see Resources below).

Considerations

Attending medical school in Haiti may be less expensive than attending medical universities located in other parts of the world, but the impact of the country's political unrest should be considered, as it affects the safety of both visitors and Haitians. The U.S. State Department has a standing travel warning for Americans to limit non-essential visits to Haiti (see Resources below).

Benefits

Schools that offer accredited medical training in Haiti give international students the opportunity to pursue medical training at a reduced tuition and at a level of training found in the United States, Canada and Europe.
