Traveling with a parakeet.
When transporting a parakeet to and from places, it is most important to make sure that the bird is safe and unable to escape. With the proper precautions and planning, transporting the bird shouldn't be difficult to do. With the correct equipment the owner can be sure that the bird's health won't be compromised in any way, and traveling will be easy.
Instructions
1. Place paper towels at the bottom of the parakeet traveling cage to absorb any urine and feces that the bird produces. This will prevent a mess in the car and will make the traveling cage easier to clean after the transportation is completed. It may be necessary to change the paper towels after arriving at the destination and again before leaving.
2. Put the parakeet into the traveling cage, but don't shut the door. Allow it to get familiar with the cage so it is comfortable when traveling. After the bird flies in and out, you are ready to travel. Place the parakeet into the cage and shut the door securely so there is no way for the bird to escape.
3. Cover the cage with a blanket when going outside to protect birds from cold temperatures or allergens they aren't used to. Parakeets are tropical birds and they can die from cold weather. If the bird is sick, you don't want it exposed to diseases from other animals, or to expose other animals to it. Warm up a vehicle in advance if the outside temperature is lower than 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
4. Place the cage on the floor of the vehicle to minimize the risk of the cage tipping over, falling, or being knocked over. The floor is the safest place for the bird to be, but it should not be next to any type of vent that is blowing out hot or cold air. If the floor is not safe, put the bird in the back seat so it doesn't distract the driver.
