Donate Pet Medications

Flea and tick treatments are common pet medications you can donate to animals shelters.

Perhaps your pet has passed away or no longer needs to take medication. As a result, you are left with new or partially used pet medications. Instead of disposing of the medication, you can donate it to a local animal shelter. Animal shelters and rescue organizations are always looking for cash or donations of supplies for the animals they treat and house. Donating pet medication helps other pets, contributes to a community organization and keeps medication out of the landfill.

Instructions

1. Gather partially used or new prescription or nonprescription pet medications. Some of the most commonly donated pet medications are flea and tick control and dog heart worm medication.

2. Search for animal shelters and rescue organizations in your city or state. The website AnimalShelter.org provides a search option to find animal shelters near your home. Once you have found a list of animal shelters or rescue organizations, visit the organizations' websites. Most shelters have a "Wish List" of items they would like. Review the list to determine if pet medication is one of the items the shelter will accept.

3. Contact the shelter or rescue center by phone or email. Verify if you can donate the medication. Ask if you can mail the pet medication or drop it off at the site. Ask if the shelter is a tax-exempt organization. If so, you may be able to claim a charitable contribution deduction on your federal taxes for donating the pet medication.
