Few things in American society get people as riled up as politics. Citizens who feel strongly about political issues are often inclined to call or write to politicians to make their views known. Finding your national representatives in Washington, D.C. isn't difficult, but finding your state and local government representatives can be a little more challenging. Many voters aren't sure who their local city or county officials are, since those folks often are not in the news. State and local government representatives can be tracked down with a bit of effort.
Instructions
1. Visit the official government website www.congress.org/congressorg/dbq/officials. This reliable, up-to-date site allows users to locate their state and local representatives by entering their zip code.
2. To find your state representatives, locate the "zip code search" field. Enter your zip code and hit "Go" to conduct a search. The search yields a list of your federal and state officials. Clicking the name of a state official will display biographical information, including the official's mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address.
3. To find your local political officials, return to www.congress.org/congressorg/dbq/officials/ and click on the "Local Official Search Options" link. Enter your zip code again and perform a new search. This time, you will see a list of local municipalities. Select the one that fits your area to see contact information for your local representatives.
4. Do a simple Google search, if you're unable to locate your local officials using congress.org, . Conduct a search for the name of your town followed by the word "government," e.g., "Dubuque IA government." The first search result is almost always the official website for the local municipality. Voters can then browse that site and find a link for "government" which will provide full contact information for the local elected representatives.
