Attract Flying Squirrels

A Southern Flying Squirrel

Flying Squirrels, so called for their resemblance to the eponymous rodent and their ability to "fly" (which is really a form of gliding), have become popular pets. There are many different species of these mammals that are native throughout the world, but are most commonly found in forested and wooded areas of North America and northern Europe. However, they are hard to locate in the wild due to their small stature, colored camouflage and nocturnal nature. They will come out during the day in fall to hoard food for winter. Whether you have a pet flying squirrel that you would like to train or if you live in an area where they are in the wild, this article can teach you attract this elusive creature.

Instructions

1. Assemble the birdhouse according to its instructions. Depending on the house, it may be free standing on its own pole or may be hung off a tree branch.

2. Prepare the food mixture. If using the mushrooms, cut them in half lengthwise and remove from the seeds any foreign objects such as plastics.

3. Carefully fill the birdhouse with the various prepared foods. Place the birdhouse in an outdoor area, preferably near trees and shade.

4. If attempting to attract a pet flying squirrel, place and hold the seeds in your pockets. Your scent should transfer onto the seeds, making the squirrel bond with your scent easier.

5. You may call out to your squirrel while holding out the food in the palm of your hand. Depending on how comfortable it becomes with you, it may take them straight from your hand.
