Good Vs Bad Animal Shelters

Animals shouldn't have to be rescued again and again.

Not every organization claiming to be an animal shelter has the best interest of animals in mind. Good animal shelters wind up taking and rehabilitating animals rescued from bad shelters.

Sad Fact

The Thyme and Sage Ranch of Wisconsin billed itself as an animal sanctuary. On May 15, 2009, over 400 animals had to be rescued from filthy and deplorable conditions, according to the ASPCA.

Causes

According to the Florida Times-Union, some people claiming to run an animal rescue may actually be animal hoarders, where many animals are crammed into a small space and abused. A good animal shelter never takes in more animals than it can handle.

Appearance

Animal shelters should not have foul smells, should be open to the public at scheduled hours and should have the animals live indoors. Individual animals should be clean, well-fed and healthy in weather-proof facilities.

Personnel

Petfinder.com states that good animal shelters have many volunteers and paid staff and are always asking for help. This way, if one person gets sick or dies, the animals are not abandoned.

Other Tips

According to AdoptAPet.com, good animal shelters will offer services after an animal is adopted. These can include training help, pet insurance help and annual vaccinations.
