Transport A Pet Snake

Transporting a pet snake is not difficult if done correctly. Next time you need to take your pet snake to the vet, home from the pet store or just out for the day, try these tips to transport him safely.

Instructions

1. Understand that preparing to transport your pet snake for a short trip is easy. You don’t need a fancy cage to safely transport him. Keep in mind that you want to keep your pet snake calm during his time in the car. The best way to keep him calm, is to put him in a confined, dark environment.

2. Carefully remove your pet snake from his habitat. Make sure the room is well-lit, and he can see you approaching the cage. You never want to startle your pet snake.

3. Have a clean pillowcase laid out on a bed, couch or table. Take your pet snake to the pillowcase, and allow him to investigate the opening. He will slowly slither into the bag on his own.

4. Secure the top of the pillowcase by folding over some of the excess cloth and securing the top with a strong rubber band.

5. Using two hands, carefully scoop up the bag and place it inside an open container that you can secure in your car. An open cardboard box or plastic tote is easily secured with seat belts.

6. Carefully place the snake bag on a soft surface when you arrive at your destination. Untie the rubber band and allow the top of the bag to fall open. Your pet snake will investigate the open bag, and eventually slither out. Do not pick up your pet snake until the majority of his body is out of the bag, and he has adjusted to the brighter environment.

7. Reach for your snake, so he can see you coming. Never startle your snake by reaching from behind him. Allow your pet snake to smell you, especially if he has been transported to a foreign environment, such as a sanitized vet clinic exam room. This will calm and comfort your snake.
