Benefits For Low Income & Disabled In Alabama

Low income and disabled individuals can find financial and social support in Alabama from state agencies.

While there are many federal programs that assist low-income and disabled individuals, there are also state programs, which may supplement or replace these. In Alabama, there are various agencies and services that provide general assistance, and more specific agencies providing assistance for specific individuals, such as deaf, blind and handicapped individuals. Eligibility is typically determined after filling out an application or conducting a interview, and proving income, assets, and other financial information.

Adult Protective Services

A variety of services are available for adults 18 or older who are unable to care for themselves due to physical or mental impairment. After notice is received by a doctor, or caretaker notifies the state, a case manager is assigned who seeks services and social agencies on behalf of the client. An assessment determines the need for services, social support, and monitoring. Services may include adult day or foster care, diagnosis and treatment, mental health counseling, emergency shelter care, and nursing home payment assistance, if necessary.
