Grants are available for organizations and individuals helping rescued pets.
Animal shelters and other nonprofit organizations that help rescued animals are eligible for numerous grants to help with care, feeding and medication for the animals. In some cases, individuals in need can apply for grants to help with veterinary care, emergency boarding or other expenses. Most grants are restricted to organizations helping a particular type of animals or animals in a particular type of situation. Some grants are only available to shelters that are members of a larger organization, such as the American Humane Association. Grant makers may require financial disclosures, a site visit and other prerequisites before an organization can receive funding.
Foreclosure Pets Grant
Qualifying American Humane Association member shelters are eligible for a Foreclosure Pets Grant to fund care for pets left homeless by the national housing foreclosure crisis. These grants may only be used to offset expenses already incurred in providing care directly to animals that were impacted by a home foreclosure. The maximum grant amount is $2,000. Funds are limited, but applications will be accepted year-round. Previous recipients include the Misha May Foundation, Parrots First, Saving Horses Inc., Labrador Friends of the South and more.
ASPCA Equine Program
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals provides grants to nonprofit equine rescue organizations in the United States. Grants are awarded primarily to those groups working to reduce the suffering of horses, mules, ponies and donkeys that have been abandoned, neglected or abused. Qualifying organizations must strive for excellence in their rescue efforts by doing things like focusing on professionalism, keeping an updated website and having a strong fundraising program.
Organizations that have taken in a large number of horses are eligible to apply for grants covering feeding and medical expenses. These cases must involve the seizure or impounding of at least 24 horses. The incident must be verifiable through media coverage, and a site visit by representatives of the Equine Program may be required.
United Animal Nations LifeLine Crisis Relief Grants for Individuals
United Animal Nations is North America's leading provider of emergency animal sheltering and disaster relief services. Their LifeLine Grants program is one of a few such funds offering assistance to pet-owning individuals and families. Funding may be made available either to pet owners impacted by a large-scale crisis, such as a natural disaster, or those suffering due to a personal crisis like a house fire or domestic violence situation.
Grants typically range from $100 to $400 and may cover emergency transportation, veterinary care or temporary boarding. A plan must be presented for how the affected animal's needs will be met using grant monies. Owners who receive grants must provide photos and periodic updates showing how the grant helped a pet or pets recover from a crisis.
