National Geographic Games For Kids

Interactive games found on National Geographic's website provide teachable moments for children.


At one time, learning about geography involved a geography book and a world map or globe. National Geographic has changed how it teaches kids about the world they live in, offering interactive games on its kids' website to teach children about animals, plants and nature. With online games designed just for them, the site makes learning geography entertaining and memorable.


Teaching Geography Online


On its website for kids, National Geographic makes learning geography an interactive experience that uses videos, photos, slideshows and animated games. Students can learn geographic facts about a wide range of time periods. Online games that let kids step back in time to explore an Egyptian mummy's tomb, learn about Captain John Smith in Jamestown, or go on an African safari adventure. The website, which had 1.6 million unique monthly visitors in 2009, is so popular that it won the 2008 Parents' Choice Recommended award. Kids spend 16 minutes on the site on average, exploring videos, photos and games from around the world.


Animal Jam


Animal Jam is a virtual world where kids can explore and discover plant and animal facts. The site contains interesting story lines and multi-media information, and is suitable for kids of all ages. Children can use a chat room that is staffed by live moderators for safety. Parents can also manage chat settings.


On the Trail of Captain John Smith: A Jamestown Adventure


Adapted from the National Geographic book "John Smith Escapes Again!" the game takes kids on an interactive slideshow adventure. Kids follow explorer John Smith as he establishes a colony in the New World in Jamestown. Kids go along for a virtual ride as Smith travels up and down the Chesapeake Bay and meets the Native Americans who live there.

There's nothing like seeing an animal in its own environment. National Geographic Kids makes it happen with videos about a variety of animals. From camels to beavers and bighorn sheep, the videos take kids on a natural adventure, in which they learn about the animal's habits, environment, and important characteristics.
