Treat Canine Diabetes Naturally

A home-cooked diet can ease your diabetic dog's symptoms.

Diabetes, a condition in which the body has trouble breaking down and processing sugars, is incurable and potentially life-threatening. Diabetes affects animals similarly to the ways in which it affects humans: it causes trouble maintaining weight, poor circulation, blindness and other symptoms, and if not controlled adequately, it can cause coma and even death. The good news is that you can control diabetes in your pet, and you can do it naturally.

Instructions

1. Administer insulin as prescribed. Do not stop. Your dog will die without it. The steps below are designed to ease your dog's symptoms and minimize his dependency on medication, but you can never eliminate insulin. With your veterinarian's advice and support, you may be able to adjust the dose, but do not attempt this on your own.

2. Switch your dog to a home-cooked diet low in fat and high in protein, fiber and complex carbohydrates. In a large stockpot, boil 8 cups water. Add 6 cups brown rice and 6 cups chopped vegetables. Cover and cook until water is absorbed. Start with 1/2 hour and check every half-hour until rice is done. In a skillet, brown chopped meat. You may need to do this in two or three batches. When done, mix in to the rice-and-vegetable mixture. Serve in two equal portions twice a day (morning and evening), the same portions you've been feeding your regular dog food. Keep the mixture refrigerated.

3. Add healthful substances to support your dog's natural processes that are compromised by diabetes. Add a few drops of apple cider vinegar daily to your dog's water to boost the effect of your dog's medications. Cinnamon can also help dogs with diabetes. It works by substituting insulin in the blood. You can sprinkle a little over your dog's food each day, but not so much that it turns your pet off to the smell. Add a few drops of grapefruit juice daily to help control your dog's weight, as it helps promote weight loss.

4. Consider adding herbs to ease specific symptoms. Stinging nettles serve to control fatigue and poor appetite. Fenugreek is for fatigue and weight loss. Use olive leaves for blood pressure and glucose control. Bejak is an herb which can assist with controlling abnormal urination. Bejak has natural properties that can help reduce the presence of blood sugar. Karela is an herb that can stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin and improve the absorption of food in the stomach. Gurmar is believed to control abnormal urination and stimulate the pancreas to secrete insulin in the right proportions.

5. Add vitamins C and E to boost your dog's immune system.
