Do you love animals and want to fight for their rights? Becoming an ASPCA police officer, also known as a Humane Law Enforcement Agent, will help you turn your love of animals into an interesting and rewarding career. The ASPCA, or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, is a non-profit organization devoted to the prevention of animal abuse and exploitation. Officers for the ASPCA investigate claims of animal mistreatment so that those accused will be cited and prosecuted.
Instructions
1. Contact your local ASPCA office to learn more about the program and its requirements. Talk to local officers, if you can, who will be able to provide you with firsthand experience about what it's like to be an ASPCA police officer.
2. Complete your high school degree and college education. While it is not necessary to be a college graduate to become an ASPCA police officer, having a degree will increase your chances of being hired. Recommended subjects include veterinary science or criminal justice.
3. Volunteer to work with animals. Your local ASPCA or no-kill shelter will be happy to have extra help as they are often understaffed. This will give you an idea of what working conditions may be like as an officer.
4. Apply to be an ASPCA police officer through the ASPCA website, under the link, "Become an HLE Agent," which can be found at the ASPCA's website (see Resources). They will require a current resume.
5. Wait to be contacted by the ASPCA. Follow up with them, if there is no response, in approximately three weeks' time.
