Genetic predisposition in the shih tzu is strong for respiratory problems, ear and eye issues and spinal disease, but the breed is not known for being born with epilepsy. However, there are several other causes for seizures, including disease, toxins, tumors and diet.
Genetics
If your shih tzu has had seizures throughout his life that worsen with age, he probably has idiopathic epilepsy. Its cause is unknown but is generally considered hereditary.
Tumors
As your shih tzu ages, her risk of developing a tumor (either cancerous or benign) increases. These tumors can disrupt proper brain function and cause seizures.
Diet
If your geriatric shih tzu eats commercial dog food exclusively, he may be allergic to the food additives, coloring and preservatives included in many preparations. Seizures can be a reaction to these additives.
Toxins
Ingestion of heavy metals, insecticides and poisonous plants can trigger a seizure in shih tzus at any age. Contact with fertilizer, weed-killer and household products, like floor cleaners, can also trigger seizures.
Diseases
If your geriatric shih tzu has consistently low blood sugar, an underactive thyroid, liver shunt or a brain infection, she may develop seizures.
