Grants for Non-Profit Transitionial Housing
Non-profit transitional housing provides an opportunity for low-income individuals and families to have proper shelter during times of emergency. Transitional housing often helps homeless families, battered women to become self-supportive and begin contributing to society. Non-profit organizations rely heavily on funding from private foundations and government entities to cover the cost of housing these clients and improve the services offered to transitional housing program participants.
Transition Housing Grant Program
The United States Department of Justice provides the Transitional Housing Grant Program for victims of violence, stalking, sexual assault and other abuse. The grants provide funding for transitional housing programs that move individuals to permanent homes. Grant money can be used for transitional housing, short-term housing assistance like rental or utility payments and support services such as counseling, child care and case management. Funding remains limited to transitional housing programs for non-profits, states, and tribal government.
Emergency Shelter Grants Program
The Emergency Shelter Grants Program offered through the Department of Housing and Urban Development provides grants for emergency shelters, transitional housing and helps cover the operating costs of shelters. The grants provide funding for the renovation or rehabilitation of buildings, services to the homeless, payment of operation and management expenses, homeless prevention and administrative expenses. Entities including states, cities, counties, local governments and nonprofit organizations may be eligibile for emergency shelter funding. The estimated amount of funding available in 2010 is about $150,000,000.
Supportive Housing Program
The Supportive Housing Programs provide housing and supportive services for homeless individuals and families to live independently. Funding provides grants for transitional housing, permanent housing, services for the homeless, housing for those with mental illnesses and homeless management. Eligible agencies include the state, government entities, private and public non-profit organizations, as well as mental health associations. Funding for the 2010 fiscal year is $1,158,191,000.
