Fundraising Ideas For Animal Shelters

Animal shelters provide homes, treatment and nutrition for homeless animals. But who provides for the shelters? If you need to raise money for your animal shelter or rescue organization, here are some creative and fun ideas.

Adopt an Animal

Even people who can't bring an animal home can still support the animals in your shelter. Offer animal sponsorships to corporations, local businesses and small groups. The groups can donate money to your shelter and receive a picture and biography of the animal they are sponsoring. Set up donation amounts in levels so more people will be able to participate; some can only pledge a few dollars a month while larger organizations may be able to offer more. You can even publish the names of the donors in a newsletter or advertisement.

Sale Setups

Sell items to help your shelter. Have a pet consignment sale where community members bring in gently-used pet goods such as carriers, beds, leashes and grooming supplies. A portion of every sale goes back to your organization. You can also sponsor smaller events such as bake sales or car washes. Consider offering pet-grooming services for a fee or animal training classes. Your employees can participate in these activities during normal business hours and generate added income for your shelter. Plus, people who come in to have their pets groomed may find another pet to adopt while they visit.

Fun Events

Plan a social event for your community and raise funds for your shelter. Organize a battle of the bands and charge registration and admission fees; you can offer a small prize from your proceeds and keep the rest of the money for your shelter. For a pet-oriented activity, try having a pet talent show or an agility contest in a local park. Ask community leaders to judge the competition and sponsor prizes, and charge registration fees for those who enter their pets in the contest.
