Medication For Dogs With Anxiety

Dogs can experience a wide range of anxiety disorders, including storm and noise phobias, separation anxiety, and fear aggression. Medications can be useful in helping to ease the effects of the anxiety and give the owner a chance to work on the issues causing the problems.

Separation Anxiety

One of the most common types of anxiety in dogs is separation anxiety. Dogs get very nervous and upset when left alone, even for short periods of time. A common medication to treat separation anxiety is Clomicalm, which has been approved by the FDA to treat separation anxiety in dogs.

Fear Aggression

Another common type of anxiety is fear aggression. Dogs with fear aggression may lunge and bite when they feel threatened. They may also exhibit aggression around food and toys out of fear that they won't receive their share. This is treated with Prozac (fluoxetine).

Storm and Noise Phobia

Many dogs, especially herding breeds, experience storm and noise anxiety. One common medication used for dogs with these phobias is Elavil (amitriptyline).

Rescue Remedy

Natural medications for anxiety are also available. One of the most common natural treatments is Rescue Remedy, which is one of the Bach Flower Remedies.

Other Natural Medications

Other natural treatments can help calm a dog. Supplementing your dog's diet with a quality holistic vitamin can be helpful. Herbs such as valerian, chamomille and St. John's Wort all have calming properties and can help to ease anxiety in a dog.
