Creative Community Service Projects

Involve yourself in community service.

Giving to the community can be a rewarding experience. Get your family and neighbors involved in coming together to make a difference in your community. Typical community service ideas include food drives, clothing drives and car washes. Learn some creative ways in which you can serve your community and have fun at the same time.

Pet Product Donations

Hold a pet product drive.

Set up a donation table for old pet products such as collars, leashes, new and unopened food products, flea treatments, pet beds, carriers, new litter, new litter boxes and toys. Donate the items to needy families who have pets. Needy families may have resources for food and clothing, but their pets may suffer. These families may have to abandon these pets. This community service project will help both the pets and the families while decreasing the number of abandoned animals in shelters.

Children's Music

Give a family the gift of music.

Compile a CD of children's music such as lullaby music, singalongs, Disney soundtracks and educational music. Create several copies, and donate them to needy families with children. You can legally purchase and download these types of songs from various websites and online programs, then burn them on CDs.

Map Making

Create and disperse maps of community sites.

Design and make maps of local parks, bike trails, beaches, museums, historic sites, libraries or other community sites. Print larger copies, then donate them to the organizations and disperse them as brochures.

Handmade Blanket Drive

Create and donate handmade blankets.

Get a group of people in the community together to get together and create blankets for members of the community. This activity can have a creative old-fashioned quilting bee feel. You can make various types of blankets such as quilts, fleece tie blankets, crocheted blankets, knitting blankets and sewed blankets. Create various sizes to fit infant, children, teen, adult twin bed, adult queen bed and adult king beds. Donate them to people in the community during the winter months, as well as to pregnant women or newlyweds.

Neighborhood Newspaper

Create a newspaper for your neighborhood to enjoy.

Create a neighborhood newspaper to disperse to your neighbors. Ask various neighbors to contribute stories, photographs and designs. You can even create your own neighborhood classified ads and advertise neighbors' businesses or crafts. Publish weekly, monthly or even bimonthly. You can write stories about topics such as arts and entertainment in the neighborhood or activities in which neighbors are involved. Disperse the newspapers for free or charge a small fee, such as a quarter or even 10 cents. If you decide to charge, put the money away for neighborhood events and needs.
