Groom Chihuahuas

Grooming should be part of your Chihuahua's health care program.

Part of proper Chihuahua care is grooming, but grooming isn't just about good looks. It gives you time to bond with your dog as well as provides a chance for you to spot any changes in your dog's physical appearance, such as lumps or growths. You catch serious health problems (such as tumors) early on and prevent problems such as eye infections altogether. Groom your Chihuahua regularly to keep it feeling and looking its best.

Instructions

1. Brush your Chihuahua at least once a week with a soft bristle brush. This will remove any excess or dead fur, reduce shedding and keep your dog's coat healthy and shiny. Brush two to three times a week to avoid tangling if you have a long-haired Chihuahua.

2. Bathe your Chihuahua when needed. Watch for a dirty-looking or greasy coat, or an unpleasant "dog" odor. Give your Chihuahua baths in the sink (this will be easier for you, so you don't have to kneel by the bathtub) with lukewarm water to prevent its tiny body from getting too cold. Use a dog-formula shampoo and conditioner to keep the fur healthy and avoid skin irritation.

3. Trim your Chihuahua's toenails whenever you hear them clicking against the floor. Because they spend most of their time indoors, Chihuahuas do not walk on concrete frequently enough to grind their toenails down. Toenails that get too long can make walking difficult for your Chihuahua, or even cause injury. Use a nail trimmer that is made for small breeds. Trim just below the quick, a bundle of nerves that will hurt and bleed if cut. Look for the dark spot inside white-nailed Chihuahuas and cut just below it. For dogs with dark nails, trim a little at a time off of the end of the nail until you see a circle forming inside the clippings.

4. Clean your Chihuahua's eyes frequently. These dogs are known to tear often and can get stains underneath their eyes. Wet a Q-tip, cotton ball or washcloth with saline solution and wipe away tears. This will prevent staining and infection.
