Buy A Chimp

Chimps are one of the primate species most closely related to humans.

Some people look to purchase chimps as pets, while others are looking to start a business or require these primates for scientific or zoological research. If you are in the market for a chimp, here is purchase one.

Determining Eligibility

In the United States, not all states permit the ownership of chimpanzees. Contact your state's fish and wildlife department to determine whether you will be allowed to legally purchase and own a chimp.

Locating a Breeder

Locate a breeder in your area that is licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Buying from an inspected breeder will ensure that you are buying a healthy animal. See the Resources section for more information.

Alternative Methods

Zoos, research centers and private owners in your area may also offer chimps for sale.

Financing Your Purchase

Most breeders will require a lump-sum payment, although some may offer payment plans. It can cost more than $50,000 to purchase a chimp.

Warnings About Care and Finances

Purchasing a chimpanzee is a serious decision. The cost of buying a chimp doesn't include the costs of caring for it over its lifespan, which can be up to 60 years.
