Become An Animal Masseuse

Massage can help treat a variety of disorders in animals, providing relief from stress and pain.

As animals become more revered in society, securing a more cherished position inside families, pet owners are increasing the attention they pay to their companions' diet, lifestyle and overall well-being. Once unheard of, animal massage has become a common practice within certain pet-owner circles, as well as among those who rescue wildlife. As the demand for animal homeopathic services increases, more people are pursing careers as animal masseuses. Certain training, certifications and licenses are required to enter this field.

Instructions

1. Take some veterinary-focused biology classes to familiarize yourself with various animal anatomies. An animal masseuse needs to know exactly where to apply pressure on an animal's body to provide relief from pain or stress. If you want to limit your career to working with just one particular species, like dogs or horses, focus your studies on those animals.

2. Become certified. Organizations like Equissage, a trainer of equine sports massage therapists, and The Lang Institute for Canine Massage, a training program that offers veterinary medical massage, offer academic programs that focus on the application of massage techniques as they apply to specific muscle groups, the differences among applied massage to different animal species and dog breeds, and the steps necessary to start up a successful animal massage practice. Become certified in the state in which you wish to open your business.

3. Devise a business plan if you want to open a private animal massage practice. According to the Small Business Administration, some of the most important precursors to starting a business include choosing a location, obtaining a tax identification number, obtaining business licenses and permits, and securing financing for your business.

4. Advertise your skills. Becoming successful as an animal masseuse may be dependent on client referrals, so make sure to advertise your services in animal-friendly places, such as pet stores and veterinary clinics. Encourage any current clients to spread the word about your capability to their friends and acquaintances.
