Find A Birth Certificate In Mexico

Mexican birth records are maintained in each state.

Mexican birth certificates are generally available upon request, though having a birth certificate issued while out of the country is often more challenging. Most birth records in Mexico are available through at least 1915, though the U.S. Department of State notes that all vital records, including birth certificates, from the state of Zacatecas were destroyed in November 1975, so earlier certificates are likely not available.

Instructions

1. Determine where you were born. Mexico keeps all birth records on file in the central archives in each Mexican state. To find your birth certificate, you must first know where your birth took place.

2. Contact the local central archives. Each state has its own procedures for issuing birth records. If possible, have a friend or relative who lives in the area call or visit the archives in the Mexican state where you were born to determine what steps are required to have a birth certificate issued. If you are unable to enlist a Mexican resident's help, contact the archives yourself, by mail or telephone.

3. Complete all required paperwork. Provide the archives in your state of birth with any requested information and documentation. In addition, a fee is often required for having the records searched to find your birth certificate.

4. Ask a local embassy or Mexican consulate for assistance. If you are unable to complete the process to obtain your birth certificate, contact the Mexican Embassy or a local Mexican consulate office and ask for help finding your birth record.

5. Hire a service to obtain your certificate. If you are unsuccessful in obtaining your certificate on your own, consider using a company that specializes in requesting vital records from Mexico.
