Dogs live in a world of association -- they can learn to modify their behaviors when they are paired with something good or bad. Positive and negative reinforcements are indeed very powerful and effective tools when it comes to training dogs. Based on this principle, dogs can be repelled by combining an unpleasant sound with being around certain areas. Unpleasant sounds work by startling the dog and causing it to associate the noise with being around the area. If repeated enough times, the dog will soon learn to avoid those specific areas and head the other way.
Instructions
1. Fill up a can with coins to make a home-made dog deterrent.
Remove the lid from the can and fill it up with coins. Put the lid back. Wait for the unwanted dog to approach the area. The moment the dog approaches the no-trespassing area, shake the can of coins to startle the dog away.
2. Loud noises will startle most dogs.
Repeat shaking the can of coins as necessary. It may take a while for the dog to start associating the sound with the specific area. Once or twice will generally not suffice because the dog will have not yet understood that being in the area is what brings the noise.
3. Be consistent or the dog will be back soon!
Supervise the area you do not want the dog to visit carefully. It may take only one attempt to enter the area with no consequence for the dog to unlearn the noise association. You must be consistent enough to make it clear to the dog that trespassing the area will alway bring noise.
4. Some ultrasonic dog deterrents work as far as 20 feet.
Invest in an ultrasonic dog deterrent. This is a small device that repels dogs by delivering a high-frequency sound that is not audible to humans. Some ultrasonic dog deterrents can repel a dog's approach from as far away as 20 feet. The sound produced is uncomfortable, but not harmful to the dog in any way.
5. The sudden water movement and noise will startle most dogs.
