Characteristics Of A Maltipoo

Maltipoo dog

A Maltipoo is a cross between a Maltese and a toy poodle. Also called a moodle, Malta-poo, Maltese-poo and other names, the small canines are lap dogs. Types include the teacup Maltipoo, tiny toy Maltipoo and toy Maltipoo, which is the most common. Their popularity is attributed to their reputation as easy-to-train, highly intelligent and good-natured dogs.

Physical Characteristics

Maltipoos are small, usually weighing 6 to 9 lbs. when full-grown. They can weigh as little as 2 lbs. or as many as 12, depending on the type of Maltipoo, according to the website designermixes.org. They grow to be 10 to 14 inches tall. They exist in various colors -- including apricot and brown -- but most often are shades of white. A Maltipoo's coat grows long and silky, and it is soft, fluffy and wavy. The dogs hardly shed at all, but they need to be groomed regularly to avoid matting.

Temperament

Maltipoos generally behave in a friendly manner toward other dogs and people, including children. Described as "spunky, playful and energetic" by designermixes.org, they have a reputation for being mischievous when left alone. They also are known to be stubborn but loyal, and they love to sit on their owners' laps. They tend to be ready for exercise when the opportunity arises, but they stay pretty relaxed most of the time.

Health

Maltipoos live 12 to 15 years. Because mixed breeds inherit characteristics from each of its parents, it is important to be aware of common health issues in Maltese dogs and poodles. The Maltese sometimes have retinal atrophy and respiratory problems, and they are notorious for having bad teeth. Poodles are prone to hip dysplasia, bloating and eye problems. The website The Daily Puppy reports that Maltipoos can be prone to knee, leg, spine and heart problems and says that annual veterinarian checkups are a must.

Considerations

The website designermixes.org notes that the most accurate way to determine characteristics of a mixed breed is to research the animal's parents. Because a Maltipoo can be territorial and protective, The Daily Puppy recommends taking the dog to dog parks and other social settings to help it accept strangers and new environments.
