Find A Mate For A Quaker Parrot That Has Already Been Sexed

Parrots mate for life and are devoted to their mates and young.

Before you find a mate for your Quaker parrot, you should carefully weigh the pros and cons of doing so. On the one hand, tame birds may not stay tame if you give them a mate. You should think twice about buying a mate for a tame Quaker parrot that you enjoy as a pet; you may lose its affection. On the other hand, providing a single bird with a mate can prevent it from succumbing to boredom and destructive behavior when you are away.

Instructions

1. Contact Quaker parrot breeders advertising online or in publications dedicated to pet birds. Indicate that you need a mature bird and specify its gender. Attempt to find a local breeder that has multiple Quaker parrots for sale. Bird clubs, bird shows and bird fairs can also help you find a mature Quaker parrot. Visit these venues and ask for referrals to breeders if no Quaker parrots are available.

2. Visit one or more breeders. View available birds in their usual environment. Observe the birds as a group and pay attention to individual behavior. Look for an active bird with smooth, clean feathering and bright eyes. Avoid buying a Quaker parrot that keeps still while the others are active and vocal. Reaffirm which gender of Quaker parrot you need. Ask for proof of DNA testing for the bird you are buying. Verify that you can exchange the Quaker parrot you're buying if it is the wrong gender. Request a written receipt and gender guarantee. If the new bird has not been tested, test it after it has settled into your home or aviary for a few days.

3. Keep the new Quaker parrot in a separate room for two weeks to prevent transmitting disease to your first Quaker parrot. Move the new bird's cage into the same room as your first Quaker parrot. Keep the bird cages far enough apart to prevent the birds from injuring each other through the bars. Release both birds into a new breeding cage or aviary when they have accepted one another.
