Become A Humane Society Police Officer

Humane Society police officers, also known as animal control officers, work to protect stray, unwanted and abused animals. Officers provide animals with a place to live while they wait to be adopted or reunited with their owners and educate the public about the importance of responsible animal ownership. They also assist in situations in which dangerous animals need to be captured and investigate claims of animal mistreatment.

Instructions

1. Complete your associate's degree. Take courses in criminal justice, animal behavior and veterinary science. These assets will increase your chances of being hired by human resource managers and increase your professional credibility.

2. Sign up for and attend training courses that are available through the National Animal Control Association. They offer several different types of certification, which cover animal euthanasia, animal capture techniques and animal behavior. The courses also focus on stress management, animal control and self-defense.

3. Contact your local Humane Society animal shelter and ask to volunteer in a shelter to gain experience. This will give you hands-on experience.

4. Apply for a job as a Humane Society police officer. Current job opportunities are available on the National Animal Control Association website (see Resources).
