Become a State Trooper in California

"Safety, Service and Security" is the motto of the California Highway Patrol. This proud division of the State of California monitors and protects the highways, is involved with K-9 training and use, and acts as a liaison in the public school systems.

Instructions

1. Submit an application to become a California State Trooper. You can find applications at any California Highway Patrol office. You can get more information regarding the application process by calling 1-888-4A-CHP JOB.

2. Take a written 125-question multiple choice exam. You will be tested at a 12th grade level on comprehension, reading and spelling. You must pass this test to continue with the California State Trooper qualifications.

3. Measure your physical ability by taking an endurance test. The sections of this test are upper body and trunk strength, 500 yard run, 100 yard sprint and side step run. You must pass the physical ability exam to move on to the next portion of the test.

4. Have a personal interview with a licensed psychologist and then take a written exam after a successful background check is performed.

5. Meet with the Qualifications Appraisal Panel to determine whether you have the coping skills and capabilities to deal with issues that a California State Trooper faces.

6. Undergo a polygraph test and a full medical exam as the final steps to qualify as a California Highway Patrol Officer. After successfully passing these last two steps you will be assigned to the training academy to begin your career.
