Grow A Peach Tree In Minnesota

Peach blossom

Stone fruits, or fruits with hard pits like cherries, peaches and nectarines, all have difficulty growing in Minnesota. However, if you are intent on growing a peach tree in Minnesota, it is possible, just very difficult, according to the University of Minnesota. Does this Spark an idea?

Significance

Minnesota is located far to the north and often experiences frost during spring. Since stone fruit trees blossom early in the spring, this common spring frost kills the blossoms and effectively kills the fruit.

Considerations

According to the University of Minnesota, you could potentially grow a peach tree if you plant it in a container. While you can leave the tree outdoors during the summer, you will need to move it to a temperature controlled space, like a garage, during the winter.

Types

If you decide to grow a peach tree in Minnesota, the University of Minnesota recommends you use a hardier cultivar. These include Madison, Harrow Beauty and smaller varieties like Honeybabe.
