Pet groomers need to enjoy working with a variety of different animals.
Pet groomers specialize in maintaining a pet's appearance. Pet groomers work in kennels, animal shelters, pet supply stores or veterinary clinics. Some pet groomers operate their own grooming business by making house calls or working at their own salon. Common pet groomer duties include sanitizing equipment and maintaining a clean environment, scheduling appointments, discussing grooming needs with pet owners and collecting general information regarding the pet's behavior and health. Grooming pets involves brushing and clipping hair, trimming the animals' nails, cleaning ears, bathing and blow drying the pets and styling. Various requirements are needed for this profession.
Education
Although there are no specific educational requirements to become a pet groomer, training programs and informal apprenticeship opportunities are available and will increase job opportunities. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that apprenticeships typically take six to 10 weeks to complete. During this time, groomers are guided by an experienced groomer. There are also 50 state-licensed grooming schools in the US that offer additional programs that take two to 18 weeks to complete.
Hands On Experience
Many pet groomers learn do the job through hands on training and experience. According to the BLS, pet groomers often start their training by focusing on one specific task. For example, a pet groomer early in her career might be in charge of washing and drying pets. Once she becomes comfortable with that task, she learns additional tasks, such as clipping nails and brushing coats, until she has learned and successfully performed all tasks in the pet grooming process.
Animal Knowledge
It is important for pet groomers to know about different breeds of dogs and other animals, as pet grooming standards and practices vary between breeds. According to Education Portal, pet groomers must understand basic animal anatomy, and must be able to recognize a potential health issue or symptom based on an animal's hygiene.
Certification and Skills
Pet groomers may also earn master groomer certification through the National Dog Groomers Associations of America. To become certified, candidates are required to demonstrate practical grooming skills and pass two exams. Pet groomers and other animal care and service workers must be patient, sensitive and have a high standard of cleanliness and professionalism. Customer service, business skills and good management skills are also ideal for pet groomers who own their businesses.
