Find A New Pet

Finding the right pet is an important decision, and takes time and patience.

Bringing home a new pet is an exciting experience. However, if you don't know where to look for a new pet, it can seem or overwhelming. Just know that wherever you live, there are plenty of options for you to explore, and you're sure to be able to find the perfect pet to fit in with your family, your lifestyle and your personality.

Instructions

1. Decide what type of pet you're interested in. Would you prefer a dog, a cat, a hamster or another kind of domesticated animal? Or would you prefer a more exotic pet, such as a parrot or a reptile?

2. Look online for local rescue organizations; most rescue groups list available animals on their websites. And some pet supply stores such as Petsmart and Petco work with local rescue groups and feature adoptable cats and dogs in their stores.

If you're looking for a specific breed of cat or dog, look for a breed-specific rescue. And rescues aren't just for dogs and cats; there are rescue organizations for horses, parrots, reptiles and rabbits, too.

3. Look in your local newspaper. Chances are you'll be able to find ads from local breeders or individuals looking to sell a pet for personal reasons.

4. Visit breeders, pet stores and rescues to view and interact with the pets you're interested in before purchasing your new pet. You want to be sure that your new pet will fit in with your lifestyle and be a good addition to your family. You might also want to visit with someone who owns the type of pet you're interested in and learn firsthand what living with this type of animal will be like.
