Community Education Projects For Pet Owners

Volunteering with your well-behaved pet can show others be a responsible pet owner.

Pet ownership is a responsibility most people don't take lightly. Often, pet owners want to share with the world their enthusiasm for animals and their passion for humane treatment of animals. By volunteering, organizing events and even promoting events through social media forums, pet owners can help educate their communities on the responsibilities that come with owning a pet and what they can do to keep themselves and their pets safe.

Animal Shelters

Volunteer at a shelter. Bring your dog, if you have one, and walk or run the shelter dogs around to get them exercise. You can also greet potential adopters with your well-behaved pet and show them what a good human-pet relationship could be. As well, you can let people know how important it is to commit to an animal once it is adopted. Share great experiences you have had as a pet owner.

Service Animals

Train and certify your pet to be a service pet. Many animals, including dogs, cats and birds, can help children in school by sitting with them while they read, for instance. Animals also brighten the days of the elderly and others in residential facilities. By doing this, you can demonstrate how powerful pets are to human happiness and help others at the same time.

Fundraisers

Plan and carry out fundraisers for local animal-rescue organizations. Use your animal as a poster animal on fliers and other media and bring your animal to whatever event you help coordinate. Present information about pet overpopulation, the plight of shelter animals and ways people can help.

Social Media and Networking

Use social media to promote the message of organizations with which you are affiliated. Did you have a great experience at the local dog training club? Have you witnessed the passion and hard work your local animal-shelter workers put into their jobs? Facebook, twitter and email are great ways to let people know how you feel and promote causes dear to your heart. Talk about your own experience and refer people to official websites.
